It’s not just in New Orleans, and actually many towns do parades for Mardi Gras. Supposedly some of the earliest ones took place in Mobile Alabama. In any case, Mardi Gras is connected to the religious period known as Lent. A sort of last bit of revelry before Lent. Similar to Carnival in Italy and Brazil.
