Yeah, well...I started in '88 with the Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Club then, as I started work in 1990, I usually bought them as they came out (hence the mostly first editions + The Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic/Equal Rites and Mort are all much later special edition hardback reprints) and then, once married, it's been a tradition for the last few years to get one from the Mother-in-law for either Birthday or Christmas...

I used to have chess on my computer, but Microsoft quit packaging it, lol.
If you are looking for a good chess program Arena 3.5 GUI and Stockfish 6 running on it is the way to go. Both are free downloads and quite capable of destroying the current World Champion, Magnus Carlsen.
Although losing every game on it is no longer fun. So perhaps Microsoft chess is better after all.

You canīt change the difficulty?
Yes you can. Arena is a GUI and you can install heaps of different programs that can play at all different levels. And yes, Stockfish itself can be scaled down to play at a lower level as well. I guess it sort of defeats the purpose of having such an awesome set up and not using it.
These days I mostly use Stockfish for game analysis of World Championship games. Although going through the last 150 years of chess does take time.

Yes, you can actually beat Microsoft chess occasionally, but it shuts the computer down before you can gloat.
I am looking for the original Chips Challenge (not the remake of it, I don't like the remake). I have kept a VERY old computer around just so I could keep playing Chips.
I have the original FLOPPY disc with Chips Challenge, chess, some tomb raiding game, Tetras, - plus about 20 more Microsoft bundled games on it (!) - but computers don't have slots for floppy discs anymore.
That old computer has a DOS partition with Arena and Daggerfall; and on the other side of the partition is games like: Echo the Dolphin, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc. But it is OLD, with one of those enormous monitors that weighs hundreds of pounds. Back when computers didn't have USB connectors or firewires, lol.
Last year I copied Chipīs Challenge to a newer computer as a backup. But I still prefer to play it on the oldest puter
I used to have a demo of the original Doom too but seem to have lost it somehow.
