And didn't tell the other cashier she's off for the rest of the week. The only reason I know is because I heard him talking to the new cashier in hushed tones.
So, I told the other cashier what he was doing and told her to go ahead and come in for her shift, since I was covering for my boss anyways. and then he cut the old cashier's hours by half and gave the hours to the new cashier. The he cut the other cashier's hours as well, and gave them to the other assistant and I.
He cleared her schedule, and hired another cashier from another store, and gave the new cashier the hours.

And they replaced you? Seems like he is the problem, they should have kept you in charge even if you hated it. You ran that place with the knowledge of what the cashiers go through and what the management has to do. This other guy sounds like he is bringing family or favorites in and doesn't give a good crap about the employees that have been busting their butts off there.

Our sales have jumped so high since he's been here, we're number two in our district.
Shrink (Stolen/damaged items) has gone down, sales are up, and he's pulling the store out of the muck that it was in.
I'm NOT a manager. I don't have the skills necessary to run a store. I'm okay with that. But at least I KNOW my employees, worked with them, and didn't use passive-aggressive techniques to get their attention. When I gave them some leeway, they were more than happy to come back twice as hard for me to make up for their shortcomings.
The cashier he's doing this to has had to attend three funerals in the past month, her mother is sick and not doing good and needs constant care, and she tries her best to be at work when she can. Maybe I'm too sympathetic, but I'd much rather be sympathetic than apathetic.

But was this upswing really due to him? Because he hasn't been there that long, it could have been an upswing YOU were responsible for and he just walked into. How could the stats show improvement that fast? Maybe he is just really good at doctoring the books, because that is way too fast for there to be a noticable change.

Agreed. Either you (Elisabeth) did it, or he's screwing around. No way he turned anything around like that, that fast.
I don't know if there's any way to cook up sales, because our system catches stuff like that pretty quickly. Not to mention he's ALWAYS on camera.

They sure can. They can switch records from one store to the other just by changing the store number on the documents, etc. I don't trust him, his success is too fast to be real.

Well, if he is he will be caught too, but if he is slick it may take a while. Inventory has to match sales and shrink, and revenue has to match up - sooner or later that kind of padding the books shows up and they usually set up an investigation to find out who is doing it before the actual "catching" goes down. He'll think he is getting away with it a while before they surprise him.
You might be grateful if it takes any time at all, because otherwise he could say he caught you doctoring the books and that was why he replaced you - people like him have no scruples.

Liz, I know you don't think you were management material, but you were. The issues you had in that position were all caused by the management over you screwing with that place.
Think about it this way. As a manager, would you push out and replace your most reliable employee when she was the only one there you could count on to be there for her own shift and anyone else's that didn't show up?
No employee is completely indispensible, but you were as close as it gets. And then suddenly the store is doing so great in such a short time? That manager probably pushed you out because he knew you'd pick up on a few things he was doing, because you are smart and had been trained just enough to be able to see if something wasn't Kosher in his books.
I think they were idiots to even let you go period, you were the only reason their doors were open too many times.

How did all this come about? I'm madder than a hornet they would treat you this way when they all but forced you to take over for the manager before, ran you ragged before and after - and know you have a child to feed at home.

I don't know. I don't even know. The only one who has, through this whole thing, even treated me like a human being is my District Manager. He would send me emails almost daily telling me I'm doing great, it'll be okay, help is coming soon, and to try to not take on too much stress. I'll definitely miss him, and will be writing him a nice letter thanking him for being the only decent one in the company. Hell, he constantly offers to buy me food, knowing that I can barely afford to feed myself, when he's at the store. "Here, let me buy you lunch, hey, you want a Coke? I'm going to McDonalds, what kind of burger do you like?" He's been around me long enough to know how I function, and that I tend to take on too much at one time, and don't complain to the people who can actually DO something.
Maybe he was in your position once. That's a good thing he's nice to you. You need at least one understanding person with all the stress you're under

I wonder what he thinks about all this. He knows what a good worker you are, knows how reliable you are. I'll bet he won't be happy when he finds out this new guy just dumped you - he could have sent you to another store, you have done nothing to get pushed out the door, Liz. If I were you, I would apply for Unemployment Compensation and make them tell you why you were let go. Bring any reviews that said how good you were doing and tell them that they gave you no reason for being replaced. You'll get paid 3/4 of your income from the last quarter for at least 6 months or until you get a job - paid to sit home with Snuggles. Let the new manager explain that to the company, since they have to pay every bit of the compensation you draw. If they fight it, they have to prove you did something wrong and they can't because you didn't.
I had a company do that to me before, the boss got engaged to a girl that worked there and gave her a management position over all these people that had worked there much longer than her and were much better workers. Well, she showed me her engagement ring and it had a chip diamond in it - a chip! Well, she overheard me telling one of the other girls that "If he gave me that ring, I'd have dropped it in a grate too, and told him to come back when he was serious."
After that it was on, she wanted rid of me; but I was a good employee, so it was really hard to get rid of me. So she just fired me one day and wouldn't say why. Well, I filed for Unemployment Compensation to tide me over while I looked for a job, and the company had to tell why they let me go - and couldn't, they had no reason. They ended up having to pay me to sit around my house with my children till I got another job.
He has a paper trail, though. He'll give me ten things to do and expect me to accomplish all of it in five hours' time with NO HELP. And when I don't do it, he writes me up.
Like today. I had to damage out six 13 gallon totes of damaged items (scan, log, break them, toss them in the trash) take out the trash (Boxes crammed together over my head and compiled into an area of about..fifteen yards in diameter) Clean the bathrooms, rearrange the shoes, put away the rest of the freight AND clean the parking lots. And I had NO HELP until 3 pm today. And once help came, it was time for us to start making the store look nice.
That didn't even get done, because I was stuck in the bathroom with a headache threatening to turn into a migraine on the verge of vomiting. Everything he gave me to do required me to leave the front, stop attending customers, and I couldn't. I can leave the front. Even if I could, I never got the chance anyways because of how BUSY we were today. Not to mention it rained so we couldn't take the trash out OR clean the parkinglot. I'm sure I'll hear about it tomorrow.

I agree with Kobby, he was setting you up. If you are no longer management, then who else was given that list of tasks? If you can prove you were the only one, that looks suspiciously like he was setting you up. And if you are still considered management, why were you alone in the store and given tasks that left customers alone and unwaited on in the store? See, he is slick, Liz. I have to agree with Kobby on this Liz - on everything he said here. You aren't doing anything wrong, don't feel like it is you. That job might just not be the right place for you, it sounds like they are a mess.
