I don't get the aversion to Steam. I'm using it for the first time, and it doesn't bother me one bit.
It's fine while it works, but to take an example: if Bethesda fall out with Valve, the latter can disable all users ability to launch Skyrim. I.e. the third party here has all the control. I can live with that for now, in the hope the problem will go away before the game goes away.
A related issue is "what if Valve go out of business, or get taken over by a competitor of my preferred game publisher?"
With the old "have the disk to play" methods, you were only dealing with the one company, and the right to use the game was independent of their existence. You could still play games after the supplier went bust. Steam is required to keep the game playable, and we don't control that.
These are my concerns as well, but I did give in and get Skyrim plus bought the Legendary version via Steam = it was on sale, lol. I think (at least for right now) that this is the way the future of gaming is heading, and so we are kind of going to be stuck eventually giving in to it.
And I have the same issue with ESO, they could pull the plug at any time and "BOOM" = I am without the game. So I kind of have to just enjoy it while it is here and hope for the best.
