I even found a clump of caramel on my forehead, that is how big this apple was! It was like some mammoth mutant apple - both of them were. And sour instead of delicious, too.

I now have a mental image of you trying to eat a couple of apples the size of melons

Sounds like they used apples meant for cooking.
Yes, they were huge! They were like 5 inches in diameter; I've never seen such giant apples! I think they did use the wrong apples, most definitely. And whoever grew them must have had some kind of prize winning soil - or nuclear waste in the soil, one! (which is not unheard of in this area, by the way! You can't eat the fish in these lakes due to PCBs created by hospitals and Oak Ridge labs dumping their wastes in them before it was against the law to do that).

But you need a sharp/sour apple to make a candy apple, or it's too sweet and sickly.
Still, if you start with giant apples, then candy slices might have been a better idea.
Gaaaaah! Blasphemy! There is no such thing as too sweet!
I'll take the Delicious apple over sour every time; not too sweet for me, lol.
