I see what you are saying - but then again, you have bills to pay. It is kind of a trade-off, he might have to pay someone if you weren't helping him.
I've learned with friends/neighbors to just make whatever I do for them a gift in my own mind - where I ask/expect absolutely nothing whatsoever in return. That way if they every pay anything it is a welcome surprise and there is never a feeling between us of a "debt due."
That way the friendship stays intact, and if the "favor" is too large I can always say no instead of doing it.

Yeah, and not just karma (but it keeps the priority on the friendship and not money/"you owe me X"/etc). I like those kind of deals, because they keep the human equation above the monetary one.

But, doing good with the hope and intention of making the world a better place, that is in fact it's own reward.
