It gets worse. Here in 'Merica, chips are called fries, and crisps are called chips. (And you just won't believe biscuits.) It's very difficult to find vinegar for your fish and chips, unless the place is run by an ex-pat Brit. Mayonnaise with your patates frites is a Belgian thing, if I recall.
If anyone in the U.S of A knows a source of proper mushy peas, I'd be grateful. You can get spotted dick in a can if you're desperate, but mushy peas have avoided me so far (nearly 30 years of hunting).
