Well, there is a lot more said about the fighting and destruction than what followed it. But I always thought the significant thing about Ragnarok was neither the destruction nor the new beginning, but the balance of forces. There was just enough destruction to get rid of the old order, which was able to fight hard enough to prevent the total destruction of everything, thus ensuring a rebirth. So neither aspect is more or less important than the other.

That's not something I recognize. Accounts may vary but I've never come across that one. The only one I've heard is about the new world starting up (an event called Ragnarok) and in order for that to happen "the old" must be destroyed. Nothing about "enough" destruction, just destruction, in which the old gods, trolls and monsters fight and die and the old world is destroyed in order to leave room for the new.

The balance of powers sound more like the old world where the gods constantly had to balance the chaos created by the trolls.

Destruction, yes, but not complete destruction. Elements of the old world survive into the new one, even some of the gods survive or are resurrected. So some of the old world was preserved, but not enough to keep things the way they were. And consider the fighting itself:

The greatest weapons of the Aesir; Mjolnir and Gungnir, to say nothing of their wielders. And they're each met by a monster that slays them, though the monster in turn is slain. Denying all of them any impact of events beyond their personal battles. And in the case of Thor and Jormungand, we see the perfect neutralisation of forces as the two slay each other.

It's not explicitly stated, but the elements are there.

Yes, I know this. But in my mind neutralisation of powers is not quite the same as balance of powers.


And my statement stands; Ragnarok is about something new being created rather than the actual fight and destruction which most people think.

Well, you've said it's about creation rather than destruction, I've said it's about both equally. There's overlap, but now quite agreement.

So Khajiit was in his local bookstore/coffee shop today and he was looking at this photography book focusing on abandoned places in the world. It was a neat book, with different categories for different types of of places (e.g. Industrial, Military/Scientific, Entertainment, Ghost Towns and Cities, etc.). One of the pictures was of an empty stretch of desert with a bunch of military-ish crates laying about in an orderly fashion. Well this was apparently a major base for US military forces in Iraq, the picture having been taken after the military left for home. It was only one picture; empty desert, with a bunch of crates. Now, the caption for the pic mentioned that an ancient Mesopotamian city state (forget which though Khajiit thinks it was Ur) and its ziggurat temple fell within the perimeter of the base. Why wouldn't they include this in the pic?!!
