I get the whole piņata thing, but there isn't much in the way of candy here in the UK. Outside of M&Ms, which I've never been a fan of, I don't really recall anything labeled as "candy". Though I gather it's used as pretty much a catch-all for anything vaguely similar in America, hence the "no damn candy" reply.
Wrong side of the Atlantic for that sort of thing.
