Because I'm actually relatively smart and if I put in effort I would get A's and B's in all my subjects. As it is I barely study, rarely do hw and do all my assignments the night before and still get B's and the occasional C. Up until now I didn't care, but last week I had a sudden epiphany

I've never played Arena. I took a stab at Daggerfall, but once I got to a city I found it pretty much impossible to find anything and frankly I couldn't be bothered. There were some good aspects, but so much crap to put up with

Yeah, the place was a mess. I spent 45 minutes just trying to find a shop, and no-one there seemed to be able to point me in the right direction. At that point I just gave up.
It's the same in Arena only the odd npc gives good directions. I was lucky in that the first big city I came to there was an inn right by the gate. I spent 30 minutes looking for an inn in the first town though.

It's a shame they were so bad. I actually liked Dagerfall up until that point, though the tutorial dungeon is a bitch, and cheap to boot. Still, it had a damn good character creation system...
I really liked both Arenaīs and Oblivionīs starter dungeons.

Me too. Arena's made you feel like a real noob and I actually liked that. Games those days (RPGs on particular) were much harder/had a steep learning curve

I think Oblivion's would have been better if it wasn't tied into the main quest. Escaping the dungeon and going through lost tunnels beneath the city was great, having the main quest forced down out throat, not so much.
I liked Morrowind's approach the best. Create your character, and kicked out into the game. Sure, they give you a package to deliver, but when you do unless you're above a certain level you're told to go away and come back when you're more experienced.

I definelty liked morrowind's approach as well, my favorite start to a game. I've stopped running through the tutorial with my non-MQ characters (pretty much all of them now). I have a save just before you leave the sewers. I start up from there and make the character, then I rp how they got into that situation

I used to do that, but then I started getting annoyed about my characters having incresed skills they wouldn't otherwise use. Now I use the tutorial as a sort of get to know them stage before entering the game proper. Once I'm out a little fast-travel shenanigans gets them to where they start from.
