Has anyone ever heard of the Shattered Lives Program? It's a program that goes from highschool to highschool and teaches them about drunk driving...by taking students from the school and staging an accident in the school parking lot. People the students know are taken away in handcuffs as the driver that drove drunk, or put in bodybags as the victims. Later, students walk the halls with their faces painted white as "ghosts" and can't talk to anyone, have to eat at their own table, etc.

My brother is in the program. The parents of each student involved have to write a eulogy and it wrecked my mom. My husband was in the program when we were in school and it was the worst few days of my life. The kids involved aren't allowed to go home and are instead taken to a hotel.

I called my mom and asked if she was okay. She sounded rough. She's expecting the call to tell her he "died." I told her to call me. Tomorrow is the assembly where they reunite with the families.

EDIT: Guhh, my mom just got the call. They pulled my brother from class(The Grim Reaper comes in and takes you out of the classroom) just as his girlfriend was walking by.

They should do that here, we lose at least one student per year on "after-graduation" parties to drunk driving. What they do here is a bit different, they pick up the students and bring them to the scene of a drunk driving accident, then bring them to the morgue where they have to see the victims of the drunk driver. Really gross shocker, but it does scare a good portion of them into thinking before they drink and drive.

It basically completely misunderstands teenage methods of thinking, for a start; the fact that it gets completely overblown means that the entire thing will be, at best, ignored and derided as ridiculous. That's the point. It's supposed to be "in your face." I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but there are a LOT of drunk drivers in my area. Two years ago, a friend of mine was killed in one. She wasn't in the program, but she was t-boned by a much larger truck and broke her neck.

It shows people what happens when you do stupid things. That actions have consequences. You don't get the same effect by going "Oh hey, people die in drunk driving accidents." You can't just tell people. You have to SHOW them.

And so far, none of the students in the program, involved or otherwise, have gotten behind the wheel of a car drunk, save for one idiot four years ago who killed two people and is now serving time in prison for manslaughter.

It's supposed to be unsettling, and grisly.

I'm not denying that there should be education about drunk driving, but I'm saying that this is a sensationalistic and cack-handed method of doing so. Education through trauma is hardly a good way to actually, intelligently engage with people about issues.

I can't think of an immediate solution off the top of my head, but it would definitely not involve things that cause such upset to the parents, use up so much of a school's budget and generally bludgeon people over the head with "Drink driving ehs baaaaaaahd!!1!one!". Probably integrate it into an overall education program called something along the lines of 'Teenage lifestyles' giving a no-frills and no-glamour education on the effects of drinking and drug use, education on how to use contraception properly (because let's face it, they're teenagers. They're gonna have sex) and include the effects of drink-driving as part of that.

That sounds like a good program, Elisabeth. In my home town they used to haul the wrecked cars to the high school where the kids were from. It was effective, but it only worked after someone had died.

It’s a shame that the calm, gentle discussions don’t get the point across. Every spring seems to bring another carload of dead teenagers around here. It’s devastating to the whole community when it happens.

Guillotine - we've got the cutest little guillotine
It makes a cut that's really neat and keen
Sharp and clean
It never makes an error
It helps our reign of terror;

Guillotine - come to our court and you will see just what we mean
It is the bestest yet, it even beats Gillette, it's our little guillotine!
