Today's the day I've been dreading for a long while.

Its school-time, again. Our two-week Winter break was too short, in my opinion. Not that I hate studying, but try being the only Filipino in a Japanese school.

The pressure would rub on your nerves, I swear.

WOO HOO !!! Lumpias and Halo Halo !!!!
ureniashtram
*ears perked up*

Did somebody just said Lumpia and Halo Halo? Because if they do, they forgot to mention MENUDO, (yumx2) SINIGANG (mouth waters) and last but not least;

BIKOL EXPRESS. A train of deliciousness would deliver a 'caravan' full of tasty expression into your mouth (does this make sense?)!! That's why it's called BIKOL EXPRESS. Because one bite can make you say: Choo choo! (picked this line off of a commercial)

Or my personal favorite; CHAM-to-the-PO-followed-by-RADO. CHAMPORADO! Chocolate oatmeal, bebe!

Mmm... But Halo Halo, makes me wanna come..

To the kitchen and fix myself some food.

QUOTE(Grits @ Jan 10 2011, 06:07 AM) *

So I agreed to look after the science lab’s pet snake over the school break.

“This is going to be great! You’re going to love Flakey,” says Child 1.

“Flakey, that’s a nice name. What does she eat? Meal worms, crickets?” I say.

“Mice. Two every week.”

“Oh.” I’m thinking of Child 2, the rodent lover. “Do they squeak much on the way down?”

“No, because they’re frozen.”

“Micicles! Ha ha, that’s great. Phew.”

“She likes her food to be warm, so you have to microwave them.”

“Micro…what?” This is not good. I’m thinking there is no way to back out now without looking like a big baby. The science teacher is super cute, so this is not an option. I decide I will microwave the mice, throw out the microwave, then possibly burn down the kitchen depending on what microwaved mice smell like. “OK.”

“Ha ha! I was just kidding about the microwave. I just wanted to see if you’d do it.”

The things we suffer at the hands of loved ones.

...did you actually microwave it?
Grits
No, happily it didn’t go that far. The whole conversation took place in the car where I was unable to scrutinize him for signs of dishonestly or humor, since I was driving. If the mice had actually gone into the microwave, he would have been the first one throwing up! blink.gif

They do have to be thawed, but room temperature was good enough for Flakey.

Hey y'all just dropping a line to let you know that I finally landed an EMT gig, I am alive and working hard, and I hope to get some updates in soon enough, especially as I will finally be able to afford internet in my place. Expect something around february-ish. Hope you're all well. Happy-all-the-holidays-I-missed.
haute ecole rider
Congratulations Black Hand! Being an EMT is a tough job, but somebody has to do it. biggrin.gif

Seriously, it's one of the most invaluable and underappreciated jobs out there. My grandmother, my dad, and even myself have had positive encounters with EMT's. At the risk of sounding like pretentious Count Leyawiin, you're doing a great service to humankind!
Olen
Congrats Blackie, glad you've found a job, and one which helps people. I should imagine that is fairly satisfying. smile.gif

I don't know if I mentioned the terrible, awful, miserable cold I had a couple of weeks age, but I lived. Last week Mr. Grits began coughing and sniffling. Since I am such a loving, supportive wife I have concealed my accusations of histrionics and being a big baby as sympathy that his "man-cold" was far more severe than anything I had to suffer. rolleyes.gif

Today Mr. Grits sought medical attention after receiving an email from the man in the next office that read simply, "GO HOME." He returned to the house feverish and triumphant, bearing a diagnosis of bronchitis, sinus infection, and pneumonia. He got his meds on the way home, removing that task as an option for my redemption. Selfish!

Also I can't even think of a way to point out that it's only a little bit of pneumonia without sounding churlish. Sigh.

Men! rolleyes.gif

Why, I suffered bronchitis for months before finally recovering - without antibiotics, I may add. I'm of the school - if you can't prove bacterial infection, you don't need antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics for minor things like sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, ad nauseam has led to the emergence of nasty bugs like drug resistant strep/staph, likewise TB and other horrid things.

*Getting off yet another soapbox*

But a fever? Honestly, if you have a fever, you don't need to go to work, you need to go to the doctor!

Can you tell that I'm suffering bronchitis after a cold two weeks ago? Yep. When I get colds, they move to my lungs and stay there. I went to my doctor once about that darn cough, and that's what she said it was. So I'm drinking a lot of bronchodilators to help with the cough (black tea contains natural bronchodilators), and I'm slowly getting better.
Grits
I’m with you on the overuse of antibiotics. Sinus infections make me mean, but I generally can get over them.

Another gem from today was his announcement that he had 22 hours to get better before he got on the plane. Um, no. There is not going to be a plane. nono.gif

I hope your recovery is sudden and complete! (Get lots of rest.) Sorry, I had to say that! smile.gif
Black Hand
Yep. Who knew that latex gloves, purell hand sanitizer, and constant handwashing was actually a bad thing? Yes its important for surgical procedures, those with low-to-no immune systems, but for the rest of us, we evolved with natural immunity after hundreds of thousands to millions of us died from disease and infection. We've virtually eliminated the process, making us more susceptible for future generations. Whereas we haven't stopped evolving, bacteria constantly does...

Urgh, that brings me back to middle school when I was practically asthmatic. Almost any form of physical exertion let me to fits of coughing, and I mean REALLY bad. It was horrible, especially during PE. Ended up taking three kinds of medicine for it, including one purple cough syrup that made me want to vomit, it tasted so horrible. wacko.gif

Thank god it went away... I really don't want to think about what life would be like for me if it ended up being permanent.

ROFL !!! I hope you get feeling better. Run a washcloth under steaming hot water, wring it out, and lay it over your forehead and nose (cover your face with it), and lay down on your back till it cools.

It won't help your cold, but the burns on your hands and face will make you forget how miserable you felt.

Gack! I hate Nyquil, and not just because of its taste. That stuff gets me caught in between dreams and awake, so I'll continue to talk while I'm "asleep."

Drink lots of tea and when you sleep be sure your neck it covered. If you're feverish, you may want to try and sweat it out. It feels really gross cause you get all sweaty but it always knocks my fever down by the next day
Olen
I swear by chicken soup, though the dried stuff isn't as good. It clears the chest and tastes nice.

Hot toddy helps too, in moderation.

I'm currently trying to work out how to explain the thick smoke which is filling the flat to my flatmate... I burnt some frankincense to cover the stale smell that's been developing due to closed windows and didn't realise just how much smoke the stuff gives off. It's a bit foggy in here now.

Smells lovely though.

OK, so, I am now at the end of another winter storm here at my cloud top abode. School has been canceled for today due to the road conditions (icy, snowy, lots of people crashy), and it seems my hot water pipes are frozen. It hit roughly -10 degrees outside last night (Fahrenheit) so I'm not all that surprised, if not rather perplexed as to why the hot water chose to freeze over the cold water.

Winter is always so much fun.
haute ecole rider
Same thing here in Northern Illinois. Seventeen inches of snow. Now the snowing's done, but the wind is something else. It is creating lots of beautiful snow sculptures out there, and recovering driveways that have been snowblowed out. We are still under winter storm watch until three this afternoon.

Schools have been closed, and people in nonessential jobs have been advised to stay home today. Too easy to wander off the road and get lost.

I'm glad to be curled up at home with my toasty laptop and a pot of hot tea working on Julian's Anvil adventures.

My goodness! I don't think my thermometer goes that low! We'll have to send you each a ring enchanted with resist frost!

Cold is relative I guess. I bet poor minque is freezing her kitties off too!

And I bet SubRosa is SubZero today also.

There is indeed a skim of ice on the surface of my outdoor fountain this morning. That should be gone by noon though with some nice desert sunshine. Mrs Acadian is visiting the children and grandchildren in Perth, Western Australia, so she is teasing me about loving the +100 degree summer days there.

Oooh! Don't hate me 'cuz I'm warm! tongue.gif
saqin
I think it began snowing in late October/early November here in Sweden(Stockholm), and it wasn't until December that they started to take it away. Just a week ago it was colder than -10(Celsius) and I swear the temperature is playing with us. It's going up, down, up, down... Which means that unless you've got ice skates, you've got a hell of a work ahead of you just getting to school/work(and I walk!). wacko.gif

Though at least the trains aren't all stopping like last year. The person that came latest ever in my class last year came when we finished lunch, and then several hours had passed.

Sure I like cold much better than warmth, but snow for this long!? It's just daedra annoying! Yes, we've had snow from late October/early November! And if it's anything like last year, it wont be gone until Mars, or was it April??? Lately I've been wishing I'd get sick, just so that I don't have to go outside, but who am I kidding, last time I was sick was summer, and it'll probably take until summer for me to get sick again with my luck.

Dad has been talking about moving to Italy, and I do think he would if he could blink.gif I can't think of ONE person that haven't begun hating the snow yet. No snowstorms(yet, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened), but it's daedra annoying having all this snow and ice for so long. And our schools don't ever close because of snow!!! sad.gif

Acadian: +100 Don't you know that's the boiling point!? blink.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif Couldn't resist.

mALX: Sorry to hear you've been sick, I haven't even met anyone that have had it, but I can imagine it isn't fun.

Steam/evaporation. It happens if you put hot water in a bowl outside next to a bowl of cold water too - the one with the hot water freezes up first.

I have folks up in New York, and they got NAILED about a week ago. Something like 15 inches, and that snow is HEAVY! Makes shoveling a nightmare and a half.

I've got it easy where I live. It snows a fair deal, but at least it's dry! wacko.gif

It was an absolutely lovely doors and windows open kind of day in Grits World. I really needed it after having flu in the house since Friday. Not me, a youngster. It’s supposed to freeze again tonight, so I expect I’ll be a whiney little umbrella seller about it tomorrow.

Sympathy to the snow-removers among us. I love to sit by the fire and watch the snow. For about an hour. Then I’m ready to hit the beach. Somewhat related, the local groundhog saw his dang shadow today. Furry little honoured user.

Hang onto something tightly, I saw more tornadoes hit Alabama the last two years - all of them cutting right across from Slidell, Louisiana to the Military base near Phenix City every single time.
