When my dad passed away in September, I asked for his dog, a little long-haired chihuahua named Daisy. it's my last link to him that I can keep near me.

Well, not only was she NEVER house-trained, but she bites.

A lot.

Like, a lot a lot. For no reason. When I lived with my dad, she never bit that much.

Well, she bit my husband today, and he texted me at work telling me that he was getting rid of her by dumping her on the side of the road. I told him if he did that, I'd most likely come home and hurt him. (not really, because violence against spouses is wrong) He told me I had to make a decision RIGHT THEN about what to do with her, or he'd just dump her. Now, we live not only in town near major roads, but also next to the freeway. So she...yeah.

So I called my stepmom, told her what is happening, and she's taking her back and giving her to a shelter... because she bites... she will be put down. Not only am I angry, but I kept crying at work because 1. I love that dog. And 2. it's the last link I have to my dad besides my siblings. He approached it in a really bad way. I can understand being angry, but he should ahve waited til I got home to do that.

Now you know the sound of my braying laughter!

And Liz, that's just.... Maybe you can fnd a new home for or even train her not to bite..? Putting her down for that seems.... extreme.

Can't you sit down and talk with your husband. No offense, but is he really going to flip out like that because a chihuahua bit him?

She's ten years old. We've already tried finding a new home for her, but no one is willing to try to keep up with her. He's putting his foot down.

Don't forget, the little dog lost a loved one too, and she also was uprooted from her home and put in a strange place. Chihuahuas are notoriously nervous dogs anyway, and very rarely enjoy being around young children because of their nerves. (unless they have grown up in the same house with the child). She is probably not used to Snuggles' attention over such long extended periods, doesn't have the familiar smells and things around her, and dogs do grieve their owners if they were close.

She may need some doggie valiums to calm her nerves a bit, or a little doggie counseling to help her adjust to so many changes at once.

Bit she's a chihuahua! It's not like his fingers are going to fall off if she bites him. He's a full grown man. Can't he at least try and negotiate

Aye.. that is sorrowful. Could be that she's just stressed now that her master's in a different and happy place. Tell the hubby that, wild she may be, she's a keepsake of your fathers and a link to his memory.

My mother's a dog-crazy woman. She treats them like her own children, and the dogs under her act like spoiled brats! I'm serious! When her dachshund is clingingnto her like a baby, she growls and snaps at me to stay away from 'mommy' whenever I get near. And I'm forced to call her 'little sister'.

Momsy even claims to understand them dog-languages, and whenever I play with the little wiener, I'm apparently getting trash-talked by her!

Addendum: Also, that would explain the housebreaking regressions. Believe me, children/dogs - they regress with their potty training/housebreaking in times of stress.

Also, I'm sure she didn't chase him down to bite him, he must have come to her and reached out - nervous dogs don't want relative strangers touching them. They need a quiet place with little interaction till they get used to the new environment.

Your husband needs to at least let you have the time needed to find the dog a good home. Contact the vets in the area and tell them what is going on with your situation and ask them if they know anyone that will take the dog and has a quiet house where this dog will be the only pet till it gets over its trauma. Vets are really great at finding homes for pets.

If worse comes to it find a no-kill shelter or Chihuahua rescue.

She's been with us since September. She knows all of us. My son never bothers her, ever. She's a total lapdog, but she really has NEVER been house trained. They always just cleaned up after the dogs if they went inside.

Once I get off work tomorrow, I'll see if I can find something, unless my stepmom comes and gets her before I get off. Find a quiet room in your home that your husband and snuggles don't go into much, and put a child gate up so she can see all of you but no one can bother her.

Put her familiar items in that room, her bed and toys from her home. Then get a T-shirt or flannel shirt that has your dad's scent on it - something he wore and hasn't been washed if possible, sheets or a pillow of his.

You have to go into that room alone, without Snuggles (like when Snuggles is down for a nap or someone else is there to watch him). DON't chase her down to pet her, just sit or lay down quietly in the room with the dog several times a day and talk quietly to her. Let her come to you. When she gets over being stressed, you can let her out and she will probably follow you around and be a bit clingy with you.
