Ooooh,
Gwyneth Iron Man in IMAX!!...Niiiiice...

...
Yes, the scorching hotness of Gwyneth in IMAX is sufficient to make most heterosexual single men do a double-take, particulary fans of red-heads such as myself.
That's right my friends, it's time for Cappy's Marvel Birthday Movie Review, brought to by Joss Whedon (or rather, my continued hopes and dreams to be cast in
The Avengers 2).
Short version: go see Iron Man 3, in the I(ron)MAX 3D if you can. Shane Black takes the directive level to an impressive high-point with the fight scenes in the new installment, and the new outlook of Tony Stark reminds us that he's more than just a guy with a really nice suit, he's a guy with the ability to make nice suits. And then be a Bad@$$ while he's at it.
Long version: This movie doesn't have to work as a set-up to the roll-out of
The Avengers continuity and it shows. Tony Stark's back in Malibu, Pepper Potts isn't frustrated trying to baby-sit Stark Industries while waiting for Tony to come back, and Happy is well aware that his new job is a necessity since Iron Man doesn't need a bodyguard or a driver anymore (see:
Iron Man 2, The Avengers).
The villain work is fantastic. Ben Kingsley is exactly the guy to play the Mandarin, and the expectation of Ham-to-Ham combat is avoided entirely by actually relying on a compelling story of a villain whose magnificent theatrics are really just the calculated maneuvering of a deep and focused intellect whose goals, resources, and plans have a legitimate shot at succeeding in the worst possible way.
This isn't a story that makes you think "Oh, if only Tor, Cap and Dr. Banner were there to help out Tony and make all right in the Marvelverse." They make multiple mentions of the most recent cinematic entry in the manner similar to how we make references to our own collective tragedies. They say "nothing's been the same since New York" and the images are of Loki's foiled invasion, just as we would say "nothing's been the same since 9/11" and the understandings of that fundamental change in society's collective conscience is understood.
No spoilers in my review save this one: At this point Marvel has basically formalized their practice of including the after-credits stinger,
Iron Man 3 is no exception, wait, it's worth it, and the over-credits music is actually enjoyable enough that you shouldn't mind.
Cap, Out!
