I'm inclined to think of them as ridiculous, just because of the lack of backwards compatibility.
I guess they�re technically current-gen but in a way still next-gen because of them being so new and as they haven�t completely replaced the old ones. It�s always a shame when you buy new stuff and it ain�t backwards compatible.
Might as well leave 'em as next-gen until they stop making games for the current-gen. I just don't get why they couldn't make them backwards compatible, I'd bet good money though that they'll find a way to let you rebuy the old games to play on the new consoles.

Heh, you should try getting game to run on Windows 8. I still can't work out why Civ 4 plays up. At least Baldur's Gate works
