Crumhorns!

Back in the 70s, when I was really into 'early' music (pre baroque era), I came very close to buying a set of these. Love the sound.

Yes, I like oldies too. By that I mean music over 1000 years old. happy.gif

This is one of my favorite songs, but this particular version of it is not my favorite. Too fast, among other things.

The remakes I like best are ones where a band takes an old song and changes it up a little to match their own style. Like by changing the genre of the song or the instruments. So even though it is an old song, it sounds new and different. I like the Ataris and MXPX remakes because they took soft rock ballads and made them into blistering alternative/punk anthems.

Awesome! The song is pretty good too... wink.gif laugh.gif

But I still have one more remake to go: The Foo Fighters - Baker Street
Acadian
Oh, I really like that Baker Street remake! goodjob.gif

One of the most extreme remakes I’m aware of is Diamonds and Rust – from Joan Baez’s gently haunting original folk song into a passionately heavy metal ballad by Judas Priest. Surprisingly, I quite like them both. wacko.gif laugh.gif

The thing about covers is that if you are going to post one, it should be better than the original. As much as I love the Foo Fighters, this cover is not better than the original. l

Now, here is one that the cover is better than the original: GnR doing Aerosmith's "Mama Kin"

Got in a mood to hear me some Sibelius and came across this fine filmed performance of the violin concerto. I'll cue it a bit before the start of the final movement. There's even a bit of eye candy for those in to that sort of thing. I am of course above such triviality. rolleyes.gif wink.gif biggrin.gif

Sticking with Sibelius I returned to one of my favorite performances of his second symphony, Leonard Bernstein leading the Vienna Philharmonic. I again cue to a bit before the transition into the last movement.

I consider both these works amongst the cream of their respective genres.

Sometimes I happen to catch an orcestra performing live downwise in the world. Whenever I find such a performance on TV I usually leave it on and prance around with a glass of wine just to make myself feel superior cool.gif

One performance was about movie music but other than the opening 20th Century Fox score, I didn´t recognize anything! They didn´t do T2, Independence Day, Jurassic Park or any other recognizable tune sad.gif

During lunch yesterday I listened to disc three of Ronald Brautigam's complete Beethoven piano sonata SACD set. It contains sonatas no.8-11 in chronological order. No.8 is the "Pathetique", the earliest of B's piano sonatas so popular (in classical music circles) that most pianist capable of doing so make it a repertoire staple, assuming they are at all interested in Beethoven that is. Here's its lovely slow second movement.

The disc concludes with no.11, op.22, I work I knew not at all until acquiring the Brautigam set. It quickly became a favorite, especially its exhilarating opening movement. Here's a fine audio-only interpretation of the piece by Maurizio Pollini.

I've heard songs with longer intros, but at least once it finally gets going its a good song. But I generally fast forward through that bit biggrin.gif

Yeah, when something is that repetitive, I have to fast forward through it too.

I'm a long-time fan of the conducting of Klaus Tennstedt. At his best, his performances displayed a certain emotive urgency and intensity that, in my opinion, others seldom equalled. I am fortunate in recently stumbling on an excerpt from his 7 Jan 1984 MET performance of Beethoven's (sole) opera Fidelio; The Leonore Overture No.3 (for orchestra only). I could go on, but the uploader appears to have been a member of the MET orchestra at the time of the is performance and gives a far better account of it in his description than I ever could.

During my latest too rare excursion into music listening I could not resist what is pound for pound my favorite of Joseph Haydn's over one-hundred symphonies, that being No.88 in G major. What's more, I find that my favorite in-concert live video recording of it was re uploaded to YouTube early this year. I won't subject you to the entire piece, but link its joyous final movement. One thing that makes this performance ultra special for me is that at its official conclusion, Bernstein gives as encore a repeat of the finale. The manner in which he does so makes me tear up as often as not.

Here is the link to the finale and its encore, Leonard Bernstein leading the Vienna Philharmonic.

Love me some Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I saw him in concert once. Fantastic!

Last Goodbye is my favorite song of his. I even love the video. At first he just looks like an ordinary pawn broker. But about half way through I realized that he was more like a sin-eater. People were divesting themselves of the things that they loved, but could no longer live with. And he was the one who took all those things onto himself.
