I like pizza too.

Last night I made a huge pot of food. Annie's Shells & White Cheddar (this is pasta) with fake ground beef scrambles, broccoli, mushrooms, and kale. Added a half-can of red pasta paste, which is something new. Overall result: it's similar to Beef-a-Roni, but a vegetarian version. Did not expect that! But was pretty delighted.

Think I could go for that, honestly. Don't mind the occasional veggie food biggrin.gif

Palm wine, never heard of that.

I guess I'll start playing this game too. I'm not sure if I'm way out of the norm, here. Mostly I'm vegetarian, and I that often I eat some weird stuff. But also enjoy junk food too.

So this morning I just got to work. Large coffee + half & Half, croissant.

I learned about it from a book, The Palm-Wine Drinkard (and yes, that's how it's spelled) by Amos Tutuola. The gist of the story is that there's a guy who really likes palm wine, and there's a tapster who collects the palm sap and brews the wine for him. But the tapster dies. The protagonist then decides to go to Dead Town to retrieve the tapper's spirit, so that the tapper can keep making palm wine for him.

Ever since I've been curious about the drink but I couldn't find it at any local grocery stores. But I finally lucked out at a restaurant this past weekend.

Vegetarianism is good. I'm not a vegetarian, but these days I limit my beef/pork consumption. Get it at restaurants, sometimes, but not at the grocery store.

Yah, palm wine sounds super-rare. Amazing that you read about it and that it actually exists.

Had leftover Chinese tonight. Veggie-tofu dish which I added broccoli to. 🥦 Chinese is fun because it's one of those dishes which can taste significantly different (sometimes better) as leftovers.

What do y'all do for dessert? Or do you skip that? I almost always have dessert! Usually some sort of ice cream or cereal like granola. Pastries, cake, sweet potato pie, I mean, the list goes on. I can get really BAD and decadent when it comes to dessert! biggrin.gif

Palm wine's pretty common in tropical areas, but is apparently tough to transport because it turns to vinegar very quickly. There are ways to address that though demand still isn't very high in the States. I'm pretty lucky to have found any. The guy who served it to me and my friend said that it's best to drink palm wine from a gourd, but the restaurants used drinking glasses.

Dessert's always been tricky for me. I've been a Type 1 diabetic since I was a toddler. These days I have an insulin pump which means I can mostly eat what I want though I've been cutting back on dessert as I get older. That said, I'm usually pretty content with something like a few scoops of ice cream or frozen yogurt.
Renee
Whoa... Mountain Dew + Crown Royal... blink.gif

WTC: that's good you're cutting back. I really haven't cut back sweets much as I get older because there are things even worse than sugar which I've cut back on, or eliminated altogether. indifferent.gif

My housemate & I got a pizza last night. Plain cheese, which is pretty decadent for me. 🍕 Even though I am vegetarian I don't like foo-foo pizzas, where there's what seems to be an entire salad on top of the crust. Plain cheese, some red sauce, maybe a topping or two, that's good. cool.gif If I want a salad, that's what I'mma get.

This has got Khajiit thinking about what other kinds of liquor might be good with Baja Blast. Tequila maybe? Vodka?

I feel mushrooms and jalapeño might make for an adequate veggie pizza.

Spinach and feta makes an awesome veggie pizza. It can be a little strong in the taste though. Mushrooms and mild peppers are another of my non-meat favs.

The journey from "dirty" vegan to "dirty" carnivore continues. My diet nowadays consists of beef steaks, Pork loins, bacon, salmon, butter, EVOO, eggs, and salt, though I continue to consume modest amounts of mushrooms, garlic, and sauerkraut (which I detest, but purportedly contains pre- and pro-biotics to combat side-effects of the antibiotics I periodically need to take).

My biggest health gain that can definitely be attributed to the changes is a lack of migraines. I've had none in the past seven months, a first since I started getting them in 1981. At the same time, I now take only one 20mg preventative dose a day, down from two 40mg doses a day. (At one time it was two 60s a day, and I still suffered periodic attacks.) In another few months, if all goes well, I'll press my luck and attempt one 20mg preventative dose every other day. At today's neurology appointment, I told my doc that there is no point in ordering me any more breakthrough-ending medicine since I've a small stockpile on hand that might last me years if not forever.

Brain fog was noticeably reduced up until last month's nearly week-long hospital stay, due to my suddenly coughing up wads of yummy blood. Was on IV-administered antibiotics of various sorts the entire time. Was not allowed to eat or drink up until the final day. (A blessing, considering what hospital food tastes like, and its "nutritive" value.

Oh yeah, my liquid diet remains as it's been for the past year, whole milk and water.

A major downside . . . meat is bloody expensive! Grocery bills have skyrocketed.

(Today's lunch will be a Pork Loin Chop and three scrambled eggs, the latter with diced mushroom pieces, garlic, butter, a little milk and a little EVOO. Spring water to drink.)

I'll have some, too. Sometimes my entire dinner consists of soy beans + veggies doused in Bragg's Liquid Aminos (tastes like soy sauce amped). Ritz or Town House crackers on the side.

Last night we had Chinese. Again. I love Chinese food, the variety of it.. I had a tofu + rice dish while my housemate had orange chicken.

Decrepit: I don't get migraines but a friend of mine does. They're horrible.

Speaking of salt, I'm now experimenting with new-to-me salts, after realizing that the various salts I've used in the past all contain Dextrose, "a simple sugar made from corn or wheat that’s chemically identical to glucose, or blood sugar, often used as a sweetener in baking products and found in processed foods and corn syrup." At Walmart last week I bought a container of its house-brand "Himalayan Pink Salt", ingredients listing as being "Pink Salt" and nothing more. I'll say this - it has a strong taste. I'm now constantly over-salting my meals, despite using less salt than before. I'll get the hang of it, over time. (I have some Redmond Real Salt on the way from Amazon. It too includes no salt.)

Bought four New York Strip steaks at WallyWorld last week. One two-pack was marked down substantially due to being at its "use or free by" date. I ate the first of those for supper the day of my grocery run, the second several days later. Both were absolutely yummy. The best NY Strip steaks I've cooked and eaten to-date. The two fresher steaks were merely okay. Nothing wrong with them. They simply didn't compare to the "less fresh" steaks.

I had a salad last night, made it myself. smile.gif Too hot for pizza lately, even with AC on in the house. That's not to say I don't like pizza at all, though! But pizza's more fall-winter food in la casa Renee. Just plain cheese & sauce. Maybe some black olives & green peppers sometimes. I like salads, but I don't want a salad ON my pizza, if that makes any sense.

Feel like we've discussed this before. laugh.gif

Really all you have to do is cut a spaghetti squash crossways, season it with garlic and herbs seasoning, little salt & pepper and a tsp of olive oil.
bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes.
Use whatever alfredo sauce you want and don't forget the cream cheese and parmesan!

Oh and don't forget to scoop out the seeds biggrin.gif.

I'll never go back to using pasta again! It might take a bit longer but the spaghetti squash is much more healthier and doesn't spike one's blood sugar.

Yeah.

Ate T-day lunch with my brother at a local restaurant, my first and hopefully only non-home meal of the year (discounting one or two meals eaten while in hospital). I didn't stray far from my standard diet: steak, crumbled hardboiled eggs, mushroom bits, a little shredded cheese, and water to drink. It was edible, but nothing special. I prefer my homecooked microwaved meals. This surprised me. I thought the restaurant steak would taste superior. It certainly tasted different. Different but not better. Not as good, truth to tell. My brother polished off two plates of meat and veggies, then gobbled down two pie slices, pecan and pumpkin. (I've not eaten dessert/snack sweets since the turn of the century.)

I recently added shrimp to my diet, it being cheaper than beef steaks. I've never been the biggest shrimp fan, but it's okay. I eat it with my second/final meal of the day, in rotation with beef and pork. (Having had beef yesterday, today is a pork day, tomorrow a shrimp day.) Breakfast is always the same, bacon & eggs.

Not only were eggs reduced in price (but not close to "normal") this Monday, but Walmart carried a welcome variety of choices.

Last Monday I settled on eggs from Eggland's Best, whose idiotic selling point is "Vegetarian Fed Hens". (Hens are by nature carnivorous, eating worms, grubs, and so on.) Despite being cheaper than Walmart's house brand eggs, I almost passed them by. It then came to me that Walmart's house eggs were certainly not eating a carnivore diet. I bought the Eggland eggs. When cooked, I couldn't detect an obvious difference between Eggland and Walmart.

This week, in addition to the above choices, Walmart carried "Marketside Organic Cage Free Brown Eggs". They claim that their hens are "Free to roam, nest and perch in a protected barn with outdoor access." This is more to my liking, with a much better chance of the hens eating somewhat closer to their natural diet. I bought a pack of 18 large eggs, downing three, scrambled, this morning at breakfast. Maybe it was a fluke or wishful thinking, but they tasted yummier than any eggs I've eaten in many a moon. A qualified thumbs up. Time will tell.

In my defense I was left alone in the house, so of course there would be some kitchen shenanigans. I made Bertille’s sugared bacon. (She’s one of the cooks in Anvil’s Mages Guild in Jerric’s World.) I may have destroyed my pan, but it was worth it!

I laid the bacon strips out on a steel baking pan and sprinkled them with flour. Then I sprinkled them with brown sugar. Baked at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes. I had to sort of chisel some of the pieces up where the sugar had spilled over and melded to the pan, but the bacon had enough structural support from the baked flour to stay together. I like my bacon crispy. I started checking at 12 minutes, and some of my family would have declared it done at that time. (Savages.)

What I would do differently: line the pan with foil. D’oh!
