Had a change-of-pace lunch today, to begin using up foods bought at the start of the pandemic (in case of quarantine) whose 'best eaten by' dates are approaching. It consisted of brown rice, broccoli, tuna, butter beans, honest to goodness real butter, a tad of Wickles and spices, all blended together. Turned out better than expected. That little dab of Wickles is what did the trick, I think. Being as it was a more filling lunch than I normally consume, I'll forgo my daily salad-supper and make do with a whole Fuji apple and water. Maybe throw in a 100% whole wheat cracker or two.

#1 gaming food - Dr. Pepper and Goldfish. Lots of them, don't skimp.

No way around it.

Am making a minor alteration to my daily breakfast. Instead of adding a whole banana to my oatmeal/fruit combo, I now add only half a banana. To the plus, banana no longer overpowers other fruit flavors. Also, I hope this contributes to weight loss. A negative: my daily potassium intake is now reduced. I suppose money saved can be added to the plus column, but for once it isn't a prime consideration.

A hopefully temporary negative: I keep forgetting I need only half a banana until the whole banana is peeled. Not ideal for keeping the unused half fresh until next day.

For what it's worth, tonight's salad-supper was especially yummy.

Dang you eat too healthy for being in mid south states !! lol I'm suppose to be eating like that due to my location. Proud of you, but where's the fun ?
BBQ where you at is prob off the hook. And I love BBQ. But in Cali, we are not known for the best BBQ in the states.

A little Mac n Cheese never hurt anyone followed by some peach cobbler and vanilla ice cream !!! Hell yea.
Dark Reaper
I had some pizza and fruit punch mixed with some fruit punch flavored vodka.
mirocu
Pizza would be nice. As it is, I'm having coffee and buns.

You could make a banana split for dessert with the other half of a banana that you didn't use in the oatmeal, lol. You can't possibly be watching your weight for any good reason, you are skinny as a rail in your avatar! laugh.gif

Nothing..Nada..Zilcho

Just started my regular 36hr fast. Oh…black tea I suppose. Nothing in it. That is my staple drink.

But…looking forward on Tuesday to a nice 8oz Ribeye with four fried eggs and mushrooms cooked in butter. I might generously concede to a little leafy salad with it…or an extra egg!

I usually try to stay on a high protein/low carb diet all the time too. It is amazing how many doctors tell you not to eat eggs, butter, etc. = but your health improves tremendously when you do.

I forgot my grocery list again. It's getting to be a too regular habit. Its absence caused no great harm. I forgot only one food item on the list, a box of artificial sweetener. No big deal. I've enough on hand to see me until next week's errand day. I didn't buy two non-food items on the list: Shampoo and a bottle of herbal supplements. The first I remembered. It was out of stock. I remembered the second, but couldn't recall 'which' supplement was needed. Again no biggie. I doubt that supplement does me a lick of good. I buy them out of habit, and because they're dirt cheap. Lettuce heads were out of stock. I made do with two bags of pre chopped salad lettuce. Had I shopped much later in the day, I might well have had to do without strawberries. That would be a major dietary setback indeed! Or would it?

I don’t want to labour the point….but this is so TRUE.

Advice from my local practice specialist nurse was “Cut down on Salt”
I asked “Why?” Knowing full well the expected usual answer “To lower Blood Pressure…and it is bad for you”.

I responded “Show me or point to ONE clinical human trial which proves salt raises blood pressure”.
She was flummoxed because like all medics she just assumes you will believe everything they say without question…and of course there is no such salt trial. It is a assumption based upon comments from a learned medical professor’ish type like 60+ years ago, and has simply been an adopted medical rhetoric for decades. I also pointed out without any salt..you will die…which is true! (I do not advocate consuming silly quantities of salt either…I think the RDA is like 6 grams…of which you will get naturally from wholesome foods).

Then she says…eat lots of vegetables and a little lean meat….I pointed out it was actually unnatural to eat like that…We evolved as early hunters eating fish, animal meat with fat and eggs. In fact most veggies are not indigenous…..You won’t find them growing wild…think about that!
The potato for example originated naturally in Peru. You can grow Kale in your garden and farmers plant it…but it doesn’t present in a wild meadow huh!

Since realising this I converted to a naturally very low carb diet of meat, fish, eggs and animal derived fats…I lost weight, felt better and that constant hunger to keep snacking simply vanished.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical authority…but it works for me. All I am promoting here is that you don’t just accept the medical blanket statements issued to shut you up. It’s your body…question them!

As nonexistent long-term readers of my contributions here are likely to remember, I was once enraptured with the taste of Fuji apples. Super sweet. Super juicy. Ultra crisp. Food of the gods! Then, some years ago, their to-me sterling qualities went into decline. Top-notch Fuji's appeared less and less often on my lunch/dinner plates. Even second and third rate Fuji's are quite decent eating, on par with the best of other apple varieties. I continued consuming them, in hope of better things to come. Then, at a certain point, almost every Fuji I bought was third rate at best, the majority being subpar. A month or two ago, I switched to bags of Pink Lady apples, despite their being somewhat more expensive. While not on par with better Fujis, I find PL's a more consistently 'good' apple. This was reinforced when the store was out of PL bags last week. I again bought Fuji's. To my happy surprise, one Fuji was lower third-tier, and one was low second-tier, making them decent eating. The remainder, however, were low-tier to bottom-of-the-barrel. Next to no sweetness. Not overly juicy. Somewhat pulpy, as a Fuji should never be. I needed to liberally sprinkle those with artificial sweeteners to make them palatable.

So it's now official. I'm definitely no longer a worshiper at the feet of Mt Fuji. No more for me, thank you.

Such a sad decline. I wonder if maybe Fuji's fell victim to 'Big Agra', or if maybe the store where I buy them simply stocks from a subpar source. Whatever the case, I'm done with them.

Honeycrisps aren't bad. They tend to cost more than I'm willing to pay. Of course I'd have said that about Pink Ladies not too long ago. Speaking of which, this week's bag of Pink Ladies is a disappointment. Not as disappointing as Fuji's tend to be, but not overly enjoyable either. I'll say this, I've not yet felt forced to coat them with sweetener as I do with too many Fuji's.

I need to drink more water. Significantly more. Problem, I simply forget to do so.

I had 'fun' eating for over fifty years. It's payback time.

But seriously, one benefit of my current diet is that I get next to no migraines anymore. That's worth a good bid of sacrifice! Heck, when I saw my neurologist last month I was able to truthfully report that, so far as I can recall, I had not a single attack during that six-month period! A first, I think. And far cry from the thankfully long-ago days when I was often plagued by migraines more days than not.

I drink about a gallon of water a day. During the summer months, when I am working outside, I can drink as much as two gallons a day. I don't do it for health reasons, necessarily. I started drinking a lot of water during a period in my life when I didn't have money and I guess I just never stopped.

You know, I think nothing fresh tastes as good as it used to. Maybe Celery does; but not just apples = a good peach seems to be non-existent now; and the same with tomatoes. Even going to the Farmer's Market and buying the Grainger County tomatoes is producing a mediocre tomato taste. I keep buying the Vine & Roma tomatoes just because they USED to be the best tasting in this area; but they have been blah for years now.

Is it our taste buds or is fresh fruits and veggies really going downhill in the last number of years? Maybe they are putting too much chemicals in the soil or something.

If you buy even one of any 16 ounce waters at the store and drink it; you can continue to use that bottle and just clean it regularly and refill it with either your own filtered water or tap water = the thing is, those plastic bottles collapse as you drink, and you end up tripling the amount of water you take in with them.

It goes down much easier that way; and you can either drink it chilled or at room temperature. I can't stand water; but can down several of those a day without even realizing it. Plus there is the added bonus of being able to measure how much water you have actually been drinking that way; if you are keeping up with that.

Yeah, it's what happens when food is grown for high-yield/max-profit rather than flavor. I've been eating nothing but Cherub tomatoes for some time now. They are more flavorful than 'normal' tomatoes, and have the added benefit of me never eating them before. Therefore, I can't complain that they're not as flavorful as they were back in the day. I simply don't know how they tasted back in the day. smile.gif

It's taken awhile, but I might have at last hit on the correct microwave oven setting for cooking hard-boiled eggs. Took a good bit of trial-and-error. But for the past two cookings, of four eggs each, cooked for 8m15s, it's given me decidedly good eating. Not as consistently yummy as what my departed 400w microwave gave me at 15m30s, but not far enough removed to complain about. An oddity that threw me off for weeks: my very first batch, cooked for 9m30s, came out underdone. Looking back, I suspect I didn't let that batch set in the micro long after cooking enough before removing it for submerging in cold water.

It took a few weeks to figure out how to prepare oatmeal. Unlike with eggs, which the new micro's manual states aren't cookable, oatmeal has a special built-in setting. Only, that setting didn't cook oatmeal nearly long enough. The setting is modifiable, to add extra cooking time. I tried that. It was still nowhere near cooked enough. I ended up cooking it using the special setting with the added time modifier, then cooking 2 more minutes conventionally on 'high'. That gives me oatmeal as good as or better than my old micro at 7min.

Apples have been decidedly subpar for some weeks now. Even the bag of Honeycrisps bought in desperation last week provided only three satisfactory apples. However, unless today's apple is a fluke, I lucked out this week. Came across bags of Sweet Tango apples in a bin that holds no other apple. It came to me that Sweet Tango might be the apple I bought and liked a couple of years ago, only to quickly disappear from their bin, never to return (or so I thought). With nothing to lose, I bought a bag. Today's apple is easily the best I've eaten in ages, very juicy, a little tart, sufficiently sweet. Not a sweet as Fuji used to be, but I've pretty much given up on Fuji's.

Today, for the first time in forever, I found Smucker's Sugar-Free Blackberry Jam in stock!!!!!! biggrin.gif I've been buying a different brand at Kroger. It serves purpose, but tastes more artificial than Smucker's.

Come to think on it, I believe this to be my first grocery run in some time in which Walmart had everything on my list. Well, discounting my favorite shampoo. My guess is that they've stopped carrying it. Though I double-check for it each visit, I stopped putting it on the list several weeks ago.

This reminds me that I never installed any sort of informed mandatory eat/sleep mod in Oblivion. Never saw the need. Yet, my decrepit Oblivion avatar eats three meals a day, every day, when he can, and tries to get a full night's sleep every night. Certainly more sleep than the RL me gets. I don't need a mod for him to do that. Plus, without a mod monitoring things, he's able to do without as the situation demands, then make up for it later.

My long-ago extended stint as a performing musician convince me that a person can keep an erratic schedule for extended periods of times without any great harm done. Get back from an evening performance early in the morning . . . catch a few hours shuteye sleeping on the band hall floor . . . get back on the bus, ride to a morning/afternoon school concert or civic parade or whatever . . . then maybe do an afternoon park concert . . . get back from that and finally have time to drive home for a decent night's sleep. Rinse and repeat. Meals during those times might be provided by event sponsors, or we'd schedule time for the bus to pull in to an area with several fast-food joints. Loads of fun. I don't miss that aspect of being a musician in the least, though I didn't fully realize it until that stage of my life was over and done with.

I remember when my Mom and Dad would take that turkey carcass and make split-pea soup. Then in a day or two we'd have split-pes soup and corn bread for dinner.

Stopping at Kroger on the way home from a medical appointment last week, I spied Fuji Apples on sale for $0.99lb. That's way less than they've been for years. What's more, these 'looked' good. Looks mean nothing in the end, but for the price I couldn't resist. Turns out they were the best tasting Fuji's I've eating in years! Easily better than what Walmart carries. I don't know that any were old-style 'top tier' Fujis, but now were below 'second tier', and second tier Fuji's are fine apples!

Alas, Kroger's Fuji price was back up to $1.97lb (same as Walmart) when I shopped yesterday. I passed.

At Walmart, what few Fuji's I found looked rancid. However, I spotted an apple new to me, named "Juici", that looked worth a try. At $1.77lb, they were the cheapest apple in stock. I bought enough to last the week. Cut to the chase, I like 'em! The one I had yesterday at supper was indeed 'juici', also crisp and sweet. I 'might' like them as well as all but the best old-style Top Tier Fuji's.

Here's a review of them I found online:

Following this morning's dental exam (I aced it) I swung by Kroger to check on Distilled Wawa. It was in stock. Despite it costing more there than Wally World, I played it safe and bought a gallon. It is good that I did. Wally World had tons of Distilled Wawa. But it was that odd stuff with added minerals, rendering it unfit for CPAP machines. I thought about buying apples at Kroger, rancid as most of Wally World's apples are. But, Kroger had no Juicis. I passed, and lucked out again. Wally World had enough Juicis in stock to last me the week.

Now the negative news. I bought a furnace filter at Wally World today. It was my one large single-item expenditure. Returning home, I put away groceries, changed into sweats, logged today's purchases in my ledger, then went to install the filter. Couldn't figure out where I placed it. It finally dawned on me that I couldn't remember bringing it into the house. Checked the car. No filter (except for those filters cars have). I must have left it in my shopping cart in the Wally World parking lot. I then proceeded to call Wally World Customer Service to ask if a furnace filter had been found and turned in. Took me repeated calls and a good 45min before someone finally picked up the phone. I couldn't seem to get whoever I spoke with to understand what I was asking. I was then disconnected. Repeated redials failed to reach anyone.

By this time I wondered if it was even worth the effort. Surely my filter had been pilfered, with no one to blame but myself. In the end, I decided to dress and again drive to Wally World, reasoning that if, by some miracle, I could reclaim it, the price of gas was easily outweighed by the cost of the filter.

Pulling into Wally World parking lot, I drove by the rack I'd left my supposedly empty cart in. Nope, no filter there. I parked and approached a cart collector near the entrance. Sure enough, my filter had been noticed and turned in to Customer Support. Having the sense to bring my receipt with me, I beelined to the CS Counter, presented said receipt, and claimed my filter. All's well that ends well, discounting wasted gas.

The last thing they did for me during my dental exam/cleaning was smear a thick goop over all my teeth. A new treatment, they say, that strengthens teeth. I'm not to brush until bedtime for best effect. However, I can eat normally. I can't bring myself to do so. I skipped lunch altogether. No big deal. I don't normally eat lunch, except for a half-apple, Tue, Thu and Sat. I'll just switch Mon for Tue this week. Problem solved. Now, I don't see doing without both lunch and supper, so will eat the latter, and hope I can keep myself from brushing afterward.

Bad fortune on leaving that filter behind but very nice that you were able to retrace what happened and recover it. smile.gif
