Auto-correct is just as bad as auto-updates as far as I'm concerned. It messes things up moar then Eye doo.
mirocu
Another minor but irritating nuiscance. Firefox updated and now I can't change the bookmark order by drag-n-drop anymore. Also the sidebar is gone. Thoughts?
Acadian
Hmm, I use Firefox as my primary browser and just checked. I don't see any problems here. I have my bookmarks sidebar and can drag/drop rearrange as normal. kvleft.gif
mirocu
Had to reinstall due to Firefox complained about my profile couldn't be found and simply didn't let me continue to the browser. Never set up a profile before so I don't know what that was. And no; still can't drag-n-drop the bookmark out on to the menu or rearrange the bookmarks. I have no idea what has happened blink.gif blink.gif

My "new" Samsung 970 EVO Pro 2TB M2.NVME boot drive is at last up-and-running sans issues . . . for the moment. <crosses fingers>

Yes, this is the same drive I wrote about having been installed some time ago. Only, after a day of running flawlessly, next morning the system wouldn't boot. The "old" NVME drive was reinstalled. I've used it ever since then.

I drummed up the enthusiasm for another attempt this morning.

Deleting much of my original post, I'll just say that the "new" boot drive is in place, working as it should. Which doesn't explain why it ceased functioning after one day last time.

If at any point something had to be plugged in, it was probably a dirty contact.

Something I noticed during yesterday's successful System Drive clone/swap. The "old" drive slots very easily into the M2 receptacle. There is no doubt it was a solid connection. While installing the "new" drive in that receptacle, it was more "finicky". It took a few attempts before I thought it firmly in place. It might be that during my long-ago failed clone/swap attempt, the "new" drive wasn't slotted quite as solidly as it ought to have been. Maybe this allowed it to function properly that first day, but somehow shifted just enough to break connection overnight? Against this, the "new" drive was securely locked in place by a screw at its far end. And the computer was not physically touched between when the drive would boot and when it wouldn't (other than to press the Off/On button). Still, it's a good an explanation as I can come up with at the moment.

Most interesting. Malwarebytes is all of a sudden blocking YouTube for containing . . . malware. I'm getting pop-ups from them constantly. Is this some sinister new plot on Googles end. Or a mistake on Malwarebytes' end? I trust Google less, but we shall see how it plays out. (Web searches are of no help, it's prolly too soon.)

ADDENDUM:
Malewarebytes is aware of the issue, which seems to be on their end. They are (obviously) working on a fix.

ADDENDUM 2:
At around 1140 the issue disappeared. YouTube again loads. No more pop-ups.

Since my ADSL service is being cancelled October 31st and my provider wanted to force me over to mobile, I've decided to go fiber. This means I'll go from 2MB/s to 100MB/s while paying less. I hope it's as good as it sounds tongue.gif
mirocu
Seems like it is! The box has already been installed by my landlord so all that was needed was a cable from it to the computer, service was also already ordered. As I am forced to pay 4 bucks extra per month on my rent for that box they installed without me asking for it, I might as well use it.

STUPID WINDOOZZZZ! mad.gif

Right, had to get it out. smile.gif Wasted two and a half hours this morning trying to figure out why my Oblivion wouldn't start. Of course I was blaming the mods, OBSE, everything... Ticking them off one by one, removing plugins until I was left with NAKED Oblivion - and it still wouldn't start! That is, it starts, plays the Bethesda logos video, and then just hangs there. Or occasionally it manages to progress to the main menu and then hangs when you try to load a save - or even start a new game!

But when the naked Oblivion did the same, I finally had to concede that it had NOTHING to do with mods... rolleyes.gif Should have thought of that earlier... Like two and a half hours earlier!

A reboot fixed the problem.

There was no Windows update between yesterday and today, but I do have a suspect. I played Two Worlds II yesterday before bed, and that game has its own video handling built in - it was made before the standard DirectX or whatever came out. It did take a long time to start up yesterday, and the screen flickered a few times - I think the video card was changing some settings, and that must have confused Oblivion. But now I can run either game without issues. <giant sigh of relief>
Acadian
Urgh, that's gotta be frustrating! kvright.gif
Glad you got it sorted though.

Had a brief moment of panic this morning, following a periodic PC interior cleaning. GPUz shows my GPU's PCIe 3.0 slot running at 1.01. Thankfully, YouTube came to the rescue, with a video showing that it's a standard power-saving feature used when the GPU isn't being taxed. GPUz has a built-in means to kick the slot into 3.0 for verification. Me being me, I didn't notice it, though it's beside the PCIe slot mode reading.

Again a confusing youtube issue.

Some videos, seemingly random ones, simply refuse to load properly anymore. Even simple lyrics videos without anything moving won't work anymore while other videos still work fine. The page won't load without stuttering, I can't change video settings smoothly and a yellow bar keeps appearing and disappearing at the top of the browser window. It says a webpage is slowing things down and gives me two choices to fix the issue but nothing works and often I don't even have time to click on anything before the bar vanishes. This issue appeared this Monday and affected videos I could watch perfectly fine the day before. I haven't made any changes or updates to my computer. I don't have any problem here btw.

Service provider support is as always worth donkey and my regular tech guy is out of town at the moment. Anyone had this problem before? Could it be an issue with youtube itself?
Renee
Gosh no, Crow. Nothing like that going on here. Try using a hammer.
Sakiri
It's probably the site if it's only YouTube. Sometimes it'll be stuck buffering for a while, especially if it's a tab I've had open a long time but not actually watched yet.

Have you tried running YouTube on a different browser to see if the same thing happens?

I've noticed that too but this has been tabs I'm immediately watching.

I tried Firefox on my backup PC now and same issue, at least with some vids. One that didn't work on my main works on this, but still issue with other vids.

I did try Chrome and it seems there's no issue there so I guess it is a Firefox thing. I am very reluctant on giving up on FF though as I love the extentions I can use...

I've been bombarded by "sign-in with Google" pop-ups lately. This bugs me to no end. Luckily, a search easily found an easy and totally legit solution. (It's a switchable Google privacy setting.)

Guys, I seriously need help right now. Chrome has stopped working altogether for me, it just won't start when I click on it so I uninstalled it. And Youtube in Firefox is worse now; I can't even visit the main page without getting the lag and the yellow bar saying it slows down my browser. My computer works fine otherwise, both with gaming and visiting other pages.

Also; when opening the task manager it shows five firefox related activities despite I only have one window open.

Edit: If you scroll down here, the poster details exactly my issue but I can't seem to find an actual solution. Further down he talks about other stuff using firefox, hence the multiple activities in the task manager, but I'm still unsure of what to do.

I don't know that Firefox showing five activities is, in and of itself, necessarily out of the norm. At the moment I've six tabs open. Task Manager shows 10 activities, plus more FF stuff in its "background task" display. For what it's worth, Firefox has been sluggish here for around an hour or two. Slow to open new tabs and fill graphics-heavy tabs. Don't own Chrome, so can't check that. I did some research and see that Google is abandoning Windows 7 Chrome support next year, 2023, April if memory serves. But you've some months before worrying about that, if there is even anything to worry about.

Have you some way to run a virus/malware check, just in case?

Does the computer continue to run games and other stuff "normally" and at speed?
mirocu
FF here works fine opening tabs and visiting websites, just not youtube anymore. It started this Monday. The link edited in my other post describes my problem and it shows a solution, but I'm unsure still sad.gif

Yes, everything works fine.

Edit: Using Chrome again and it seems to work for now. Questions: Is there a click sound addon for Chrome? and how do I get rid of the spell checking? Fixed that!

Yikes! kvright.gif

I too am having an issue with my primary PC at the moment. An issue I likely caused during its recent interior cleaning. The oddity is that I can't find a source of the issue. It boots just fine. It runs programs just fine, games included. But the monitor screen hurts my eyes. I've pretty much ruled out a monitor issue and definitely ruled out a GPU issue. (Also ruled out, a PSU issue.) I suspect it might be some corrected Win10 setting(s), but am leery of doing a fresh install of the OS. Still, I'll likely break down and do so at some point. Assuming I don't stumble upon another means of fixing the problem.

In my case, I'm able to use my Second PC, so can mess around online all I want. And play Oblivion, since I never transferred my main play-through to my Primary PC.

I've had issues every time I tried to use FF; but my son can use it with no issues (go figure, lol). I've been using Chrome for a decade now with relatively few issues.

Didn't Google buy Youtube? If so, that is probably a huge part of the sudden issues with it. Google will be turning it into a paid service most likely. Google wants their money in everything they get their hands on.

By the way, Mirocu = (off topic, sorry) = I got a Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol as a present this past September! I'll get a pic of it and post it in the guns thread (where this info belongs, lol).

Fired up my backup Win7 computer now and did some updates on pictures and savegames. I'm also doing some work related to Chrome as Firefox is now out. Some basic hotlinks established and settings tweaked. More could be done but at this point I'm just making sure the basic stuff is easily accessed and ready.

Chrome/youtube question: When I click on a video it autostarts. Is there a way to change that because sometimes I want to see the thumbnail better first. Refreshing the page autostarts too.

Ordered a new very nice gaming rig but it took two weeks to get here. Arrived last night and have been working on it this morning with no big problems and have achieved Initial Operating Capability (IOC). That is: Windows 11, internet, Microsoft Office, antivirus. Still loads to do but will start installing more programs today. So far so good.

I want to make sure I understand your issue. What you or asking about is that when you hover over a YouTube video thumbnail on your recommendations or home page, a mini-window automatically pops up and begins playing the video? If that is indeed the case yes, it can be disabled.

When on your recommendations page, click your YT ICON, located at screen upper-right. From the resultant menu, select "settings". On that page, select "Playback and Performance". The very last option there is "Browsing: Inline Playback". Disable that and you're good to go. Don't be surprised if you need to set it again at some point. I've disabled that function several times now. Thankfully, one disable keeps its setting a good while.

Thank you for explaining, although my issue was something different. In Firefox I could right-click on a video and select "Open in new tab" whereupon the video would open in a new window/page but not automatically start. Instead it just sat there showing the thumbnail and I could choose myself when to start the video. For some reason in Chrome when I do this, the video starts playing by itself and when I refresh the page it autostarts too and I have to press pause with no option to look at the thumbnail more closely.

Maybe there is an option for this in Chrome but I have yet to find it kvleft.gif

Cool! I tried Windows 11 briefly, but rolled it back. Let us know how it works out for you.

No problems so far. There are some minor changes in how to do things that take a bit of getting used to but not really worse (or better). No problems installing ESO and running it from its default location. Same for our ESO mod manager and Nvidia graphics filter tweaks. Microsoft Office, Discord, Firefox, antivirus etc all installed and running fine.

Puter's a pretty solid gaming rig with lots of jiggabytes, tyranowatts and an OMG graphics card. And pretty lights. tongue.gif
Renee
I bet the folks at Zenimax would be anticipating the switch from Windows 10 to 11, you think?
Acadian
Though I hadn't been paying too much attention, I do recall folks on the ESO forum talking about W11 and most seem to have no problems with it. Game, Minion, addons all working fine here.
Renee
Mm hmm, like I said, I'm sure Zenimax anticipated the switch from 10 to 11. They'd have to, to keep any potential problems to zero, since the game is still actively being played by lots of gamers. smile.gif

So I had a Computer Issue last night. I already solved it actually. I switched from one character in Skyrim to another. This necessecitates switching about 6 .esps on and 5 or 6 .esps off (each character has different stuff going on). When I get into the game, stuff is acting wonky. Movements were real slow, and so on.

Ach! I forgot to reuild the Bashed Patch!

So I rebuild the patch and halfway through it stops, and I get this message:

Destination folder access denied

You'll need permission to move this folder

Basically it kept trying to move something called "WryeBash_temp"[b] into my Data folder. It kept asking for Administrator action, so I click on that, press YES, but it kept saying some other weird message. mad.gif I could not rebuild the stupid patch.

To solve, all I had to do was run the entire Wrye program as Administrator from the getgo, but it took a bunch of hours before I thought of this.

But anyway, my question is: what was Bash trying to do, exactly? What is WryeBash_temp? I couldn't find anything like that in the main Skyrim folder or its Data folder. Just curious.

It is the file that will be renamed as your bashed patch esp when it’s finished. Using a temporary name lets the replace/rename decision be left to the end, so you only replace with a good one. If the build succeeds, it gets renamed. If the build fails, it gets deleted, so it should not exist after. Your previous bashed patch is still there, until there’s a valid replacement.
Renee
Ah... hence the term "temp" being added to WryeBash. Interesting.

It's still weird that WB stopped in the middle of compiling; that's never happened before. unsure.gif

Whew ...

Following a mini lunch (a scoop of black beans plus a small amount of diced onion and a bit of Red Wickles) I returned to my secondary PC. First item on the agenda; check email in Brave Browser. No go. I tried again. And again. I kept getting messages about too many redirects being sent. I booted the Primary PC and tried to check email via Firefox. No go there either, with warnings that I was attempting to reach an address that could never be completed.

Back on my secondary PC and Brave, I decided to delete its cookies, stored site info, and so on. A drastic step, but worth a shot.

While doing so, I discovered a nifty feature of Brave that I don't recall existing in Firefox (though it might). Brave allows me to select how long a time-period worth of data to delete. As the issue wasn't present mid-morning, I figured I ought to be comfortably safe choosing 24hrs, and lose next to nothing. This proved to be the case, plus resolved the email issue, on both PCs!

I've nothing worthwhile to report on my primary PC eye-frying monitor issue. Well, actually there's lots to report. But none of it resolves the issue, so is best saved for another time.

Got a "Dear John" letter in the mail this past Saturday. Maximum PC informs me that it has ceased publication in paper format, and now exists solely as an online magazine. Remaining issues can be accessed digitally. Alternatively, I can request a refund for them. Whichever way I go, I doubt I'll renew when the time comes. I like Maximum PC, but can live without it. A year subscription was relatively cheap. It gave me decades of computer-related info without having to be tethered to a computer, something I could peruse while lying comfortably(?) on the sofa or sitting on the pot. I'll miss it, for nostalgic reasons as much as anything else, having been a subscriber since issue two (and a reader since issue one).

It's the last of the massive number of PC and PC gaming magazines I once subscribed to. With its passing, my sole subscription magazine is Consumer Reports.

Urgh; I just got one of these when I went to open a second window in Chrome. It hijacked the page to a big red full page screen that said that I needed to update my ad blocker. Well, anytime something hijacks a page I normally do a "Control-Alt-Delete" to close the page out and run a scan; but today I was in a hurry and instead just clicked the corner (x) of the page to close it out. I hope I didn't get any malware from it, urgh.
