I finished Metro a few days ago and it was good, though the ending was bizarre. After spending who knows how long traveling the tunnels with various companions and nearly dying several times, the story is turned on its head right at the end and left me thinking 'what, that's it?'
I've now moved from Russia to Poland with The Time of Contempt by Andrzej Sapkowski. I've read the previous Witcher books, so I have a pretty good idea what this will be like.

I've read all the Witcher books, got them as fan-made ebook translations from the forum for the games. I'm not a huge fan of them. The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny are easily my favourites, love those two. The others are a bit over the top in my opinion. I'm really not a fan of some of the characters, particularly the female ones, they just seem a bit flat for the most part.
I'm currently reading Old Habits Die Hard Part Four.
Loving it.

Just re-read Arthur C. Clarke's "The Deep Range" - cowboys in submarines, herding whales - written in 1957, but remarkably current in many ways.
I confess I was only reading because I had no power, and couldn't play TES.

I think it depends what point in time it's referencing. If it's talking pre-Emperor then it'd be Old Earth, if it's after the start of the Crusade then yeah, it's a screw-up.
And if it's Mechanicum then it's entirely possible that they consider nothing but Mars holy. The whole Emperor-is-the-Omnissiah thing is still up for debate.

Heh, I used to be a massive fan of WH40K. Fell out of it for a few years, and basically can't afford to get back into it. Between that and their shenanigans with their books I'm pretty much done with them. I still read what I've got, but I'm not gonna buy any more of them.

IT's well into M41, and it's a Rogue Trader of all people saying it. Admittedly, McNeill only uses it as description; "he looked like one of the gladiators of the Romanii empire of Old Earth."

That'd be it then. It might take place in M41, but it's referring to ancient Earth. Terra just isn't holy until the Emperor unites it. I think it also functions as an in-universe historical distinction. anything before the rise of the Emperor is generally fragments they've dug up, history doesn't really get coherent until Earth is united.

I just finished Stephen King’s
On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. It’s a little bit of autobiography and some very basic advice. I found myself folding down page corners which I
never do, but somehow this book invited me to mark where I wanted to return regularly. I especially liked the parts about plot vs story. Also I laughed several times (where it was supposed to be funny), and that’s always a plus in how-to books.
Now I’m reading
The Elements of Style. I lost or gave away my copy so it’s been awhile. I expect more advice and fewer laughs than the last book.

Very cute, 'rocu. Anyone of a certain age and older remembers those books - the Hobbit, all three volumes of the Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion. Those were the days when film couldn't do Mr. Tolkein's imagination any kind of justice.
