Maybe it's a first person thing? Sometimes games will do that in dialogue scenes so that you're not staring up that NPCs.
TheCheshireKhajiit
Finally got out of character creator.

1. Combat is different. No longer do you just swing your weapon as fast as you can doing the same strikes repeatedly. Now there’s a bit of a rhythm to it. Were once it was “swing, swing, swing, swing”, now it’s “swing, swing, flourish, pause (that leaves you open to counter attacks)”. You still power attack by holding down the melee attack button. Your health also regenerates on its own.

2. Doesn’t seem to be any fem-versions of the armors. My character is Brenna and when she tried on the rusty iron cuirass, it looked just like the male version in Oldblivion. I’m not a huge fan of that, to be honest, but it is probably “more realistic”.

3. Over-encumbrance does *not* make it to where you cannot move. You can now walk but not run. Praise Azura!!

4. The sewers look really gross, lol

5. The new zombies don’t seem quite as scary as the ones in Oldblivion.

6. The inventory, spell book, and journal have all been integrated into the pause menu.

7. You can sprint. Praise Azura!!
Kane
Did they keep the paper style journal and maps? I loved that charm.

The map looked the same to me. Like hand drawn. Not like the satellite GPS one in Skyrim. The menus have been changed a bit. For instance, instead of listing spells by school, they are now listed in your spell book by range. The first tab is self, the second is touch, the third is ranged, the 4th is a list of all spells regardless of range (I think, I can’t remember if there was another category). They all have the same vaguely similar appearance of the menus in Oldblivion. Just a bit cleaner maybe.
Kane
Noice. I downloaded it last night on our Xbox, but ended up playing Fallout 4 and then tweaking my Skyrim install for a bit. Might jump in tonight.
TheCheshireKhajiit
It takes a little getting used to. Your muscle memory is telling you to do things one way, but the game wants it done a little differently. There’s a few little nitpicky things I’m not thrilled about (no fem-armor for one), but I’m trying to keep an open mind because some of the changes they’ve made are, imo, definitely improvements.
Kane
That does surprise me about the armor, especially since Bethesda has never shied away from it. I think most TES fans remember the bikini armor on the Arena box art. Heck, even Skyrim had the fur bras and the steel boob plate.
TheCheshireKhajiit
Indeed. Maybe it’s something that they will be fixing in a patch.
Kane
Divines know that plenty modders certainly will!

Yep, and maybe that is why they didn’t spend time on it. This will be a goldmine for “Creations”.

I'll wait; I need to get a new GPU for this game anyways.

What is the blocking like? I ask because in original Oblivion and Skyrim you could block indefinitely. You just had to hold down the block key and would block until you let your finger off the key.

But in Fallout 4 the changed that, so that pressing the block key made your character go through the block animation for just a few moments, and then drop it. Holding down the key did nothing. It was impossible to maintain a blocking position for more than a second or two. So you had to time your blocks with the enemy's strikes, which really sucked. Ever since that, I have been dreading that Bethesda would do that with all the future games.

I'll definitely will have to get the game and a new laptop to go with it.

You can hold block down like before. Snuck about thirty mins of playtime in earlier. They didn't add torch blocking though, which I was hoping for.

As Kane said, it is more or less the same. I too am glad they didn’t go the Fallout 4 route for blocking.

Neat Reaps!

I missed magic having it's own hotkey, too. I made a Breton nightblade and I love being able to cast a spell while holding a sword and torch.

Oh yeah, I guess it was shouts that caused that to have to be reworked.
Kane
Probably! I hadn't considered that but shouts/powers do suck up one of the few buttons on a controller.

Ooh, just noticed that they changed the wolf sounds! They don't yelp like a puppy anymore when you kill them. I really disliked that in the original.
TheCheshireKhajiit
I don’t like having to kill the animals at all really, but they are just so damn aggressive and their parts are so useful! This is one reason I like to have Illusion magic, lol.
Arcry
I have begun my journey back into Oblivion with two of my favorite characters, the Imperial Crusader Arcius Letholas of Nibenay, and Silver-Tongue the Argonian Acrobat of the Imperial City. Been hitting all my nostalgia buttons~

It’s a really odd feeling for me. In a lot of ways it feels like the same old game we’ve been playing for decades now, but in a lot of other ways it feels like a new game. Like a really talented artist copying a work from one of the old masters. Both pieces are good but they have little differences that make them each unique.
Winter Wolf
The game is great fun! I always felt that Oblivion had 20% epic artwork but plenty of bland graphics as well. Now the game has epic texturing everywhere. It is such a pleasure to use Unreal now.

Walking to Chorrol and seeing those mountains towering behind is jaw-dropping!

Heaps of things are changed- some for better, some for worse.

Obviously the levelling system is a great relief to have it fixed. The UI is so different now. Getting to equipment tabs is so much easier (on XBox). Alchemy is weird and yuck compared to OG. Repairing equipment does not highlight the equipped items for easy reference. Yuck! And opening containers does not let you quickly tab to your items for exchange. It takes another button press.

I am also disappointed that the wolves audio file now plays the old dog audio. Perhaps a bug that will be patched? Not sure.

All up I am loving it and will sink many hours in. Hopefully some QOL patches will come to help fix things up.

It is a solid 8.5/10.
Winter Wolf
Oh, and I just checked my save file.

I spent 5 hours 55 minutes just in the tutorial dungeon. haha.
Elisabeth Hollow
I'm cooking up a fanfic as we speak. After publishing my book and working my way through two others, I need a rest.

Also, the elves' eyes being really close together is not something I anticipated.
Acadian
Wow, so nice to see this bringing back so many Chorrolites! Rihanae (now TrisRed), Arcry, Wolf, Liz!

I read that all characters you make are the same height, regardless of race. I would hope the command console would be able to adjust that since that's how I made Buffy so short in original OB.
TheCheshireKhajiit
@ Winter Wolf- I haven’t tried Alchemy yet (even though it’s a major skill for my current Breton witch lady indifferent.gif ). I agree about the container interface being worse. It would be nice if they streamline that a bit, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

The tutorial area is definitely worth spending more time in. The added level of detail is amazing, like the heap of rotten refuse where you find the iron shield, helmet, and warhammer, the little pools of nasty water where originally there was just stonework, and the water pouring out of the drains in the wall. I remember thinking at one point “I don’t want to step in that.” lol

@ Liz- Palonirya looks especially funny, but yeah most of the elves I’ve seen could have used a few bumps towards the “apart” side of the eye width slider laugh.gif

I think Macole also brought this up. It wasn’t super obvious to me, but I definitely did notice Rindir being a shorty, lol
Kane
The detail in some of this is indeed amazing. I was lol'ing at the jaw on the Goblin Shaman staff flopping open while I walked.

That staff looks badass now. Lol, I didn’t use it so I didn’t see the jaw moving. I had to revert back to my save just inside the gate to the outside world because I wasn’t quite happy with Brenna’s face (I turned the cheek and cheekbone flush all the way down and it looks like she had flour on her hands and just smeared her cheeks with it, lol), so I’ll check it out later!
Winter Wolf
@ TheCheshireKhajiit- You are spot on regarding the tutorial dungeon. The detail is staggering and is not just the same assets used over and over. I was a little disappointed that those huge grates on the floor (after the section where the Emperor dies) are only 2 feet deep. In the OG they were huge and bottomless and scared the life out of me. I always imagined they went to the middle of Nirn!

@ Kane- Ha! Yes, the goblin staff was a blast to see that jaw fall open. A very neat touch.

**

The NPC's are a real mixed bag in this game as well. Oh my gosh, Jensine is now so ugly and Edgar Vautrine has not fared much better. Vilena Donton has eye shadow and everything so that was a trip. And I like what they did with Jauffre, he now has an intensity that works so well with that character.

There is no sign of an interior map for the dungeons.....really missing that. I always used it to get every corner of those epic Oblivion dungeons explored.

edit- @Acadian- Yes, all the characters do feel quite short. I guess Buffy can now stand shoulder to shoulder with even the Orc warriors now, haha.
Renee
Wow, Elizabeth Hollow and Winter Wolf! ohmy.gif It's been ages!

So overall sounds like Remastered is a good thing. Very cool. smile.gif

Good. I'm glad not everyone is pretty, that would bother me after a while.
Winter Wolf
@Renee- Hi! Does feel great to be back in Oblivion! Those guys at Beth did hang us out for way too many years. This game feels like the perfect lead in to either Skyrim or ES6. Are you planning to play the remaster?

The OG had cartoon NPC's- the remaster has flat out ugly ones. I do love it too!

edit- I really hope they rush a patch for the Starlight spell. It does not work in first person but does work, sort of, in third person. Strange.

And the game does have a dungeon map. I have noticed that if you zoom all the way in on the outdoor map. And then zoom again it switches to the indoor map. Crazy UI, haha

Not right away, thanks for asking. smile.gif Thing is I still play Oblivion on PC to this day. I've got my modded game so dialed in, ya know? It'd feel sort of "forced" if I jump into another interpretation of Cyrodill. But I'm getting whatever Xbox is latest pretty soon, and then I'll want to get into Fallout 4, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and a couple other games. Maybe a couple years down the road I'll get curious about OR, we'll see.

... of course, by then I'll be busy with ESVI. cool.gif Hopefully.

I'm enjoying everyone's description of all the changes! And it's so good to see you, WW!

I was wondering about this myself. I cast it and I’m like “uh… what did it do?”
Winter Wolf
@ Renee- Thanks for the welcome! I totally understand you not wanting to jump again. Getting those mods hooked up is everything! So much time and effort there.

@Acadian- You should look forward to what Buffy can bring to the remaster. Even the female Orcs are super cute now!
haute ecole rider
Well, this is very intriguing . . . I've been thinking about going back into Oblivion lately, but not really looking forward to the graphics. The Remastered graphics looks really awesome, I might give it a whirl.
Winter Wolf
@ haute ecole rider- Oh yes! Do give the game a go. The mountains are so vast and epic in this game. Standing below them you look up, and up, and up. Skyrim looks like peanuts compared to Cyrodiil. And there are other moments too, the dawn sun coming up near Weatherleah, the light flickering off some high branches while other trees still sit in shadow. Game is insane looking!

edit- @ TheCheshireKhajiit- Yes, that spell is so broken. You can switch to third person and flick back to first. Another way is to look down at the ground before you cast the spell.
Renee
WOW look at that pink-haired orc!! wub.gif She's really cute!
Winter Wolf
Yes! She is super cute, hehe

Have any of you guys seen much rain in the game? I had a shower pass through Chorrol when I was there, but have seen little else since then.

edit- The detail in this game is astounding. Druja has a missing top tooth and the lower tooth fits neatly into the space, haha.
Winter Wolf
Oh, that shot of the Imperial City is so sweet!

I love the new combo of moustache and beards. Your toon looks so real.
Renee
Nice, is that a meteor? I've got those in my Oblivion. Sadly I've never seen a rainbow. kvleft.gif

Baurus = dreamboat. What did he guess your Class to be, or does he still try to guess?
Kane

Baurus definitely got a glow-up. Althie a Nightblade! I want to have fun with destruction magic this time.
Winter Wolf
My dream with this game is if some gamer actually discovered a door to enter either Skyrim, Morrowind or ES6. Imagine discovering the reason the game is 120Gig is because we have two games in one.

Crazy!!

It rained for three straight days in Skingrad.
TheCheshireKhajiit
Nice pics Kane!
Acadian
Yes, thanks for the screenshots, Kane.
Renee
Are NPC conversations still nonsensical?
Winter Wolf
All of that Oblivion charm we love so much is still there. That was the one thing that I disliked about Skyrim, playing hundreds of hours and no npc stood out in my memory. This game will always shine.

Heaps of new audio is also added to the game- new npc voices, and background sounds like wolves, owls, different bird calls. It really is an incredible remaster.

edit- @ Elisabeth Hollow. Thanks! My game has almost never rained for me yet. I will need to take a tour south and drop my Argonian in the swamps.

Adoring Fan for The Next Generation.

That didn't take long lol.
Reminds of this one video many years ago, someone posted showing the player going to the Adoring Fan on Dive Rock and telling them to take a hike and the Fan walks off the cliff. Sadly that video no longer exist anymore.
