Buffy is being educated! Next up, the Clan of the Cave Mages? wink.gif

Equestria and the Valley of Horses is a wonderful new addition to Cyrodiil! The imp sheep dogs were a simply brilliant idea! Of course who but a Bosmer would run such a place? Finally, tying Thernd in with Thaurron from Anvil was an excellent way of bridging the two chapters.

I sat, then tried to arrange the excess green material that was attempting to swallow me as I composed my thoughts.
I loved this!

Finally, a subtle touch there with Boderi's samll, distinctly non-Bosmer ears. Seeing little pieces of Buffy's self-consciousness are delightful, as they quietly show us that she has vulnerabilities.

Interesting choice of reading material for Carahil- one strong, politically savvy woman reading about another….

"First things first. Lift your blouse."
Carahil is probably the only one who could say that and not get a first-hand lesson on Cobra’s Dance. Except for maybe a certain Captain at Kvatch.

And credit to the head of the Anvil chapter for pushing Buffy to expand her horizons beyond simply being a Mystic Archer. I love your concept of the Mages Guild as it should be- with everyone required to add their knowledge to the general fund.

Buffy- 1000 Bigoted guard- 0. She shoots, she scores, she grinds her opponent’s face into the mud. And the crowd goes wild.

And the diplomatic (and wise in the ways of women) Acadian answers a question with a question, as all the best mentors do.

Ah, Thaurron and Sparky and one of Buffy’s greatest concerns about going to the University is what will happen to Superian. That is so perfectly Buffy.

I spy a paint horse! But she is a mare rather than a gelding, so perhaps they are “just good friends?”

Loved this entire chapter, from Equestria to Buffy’s self-consciousness…

You have accomplished so many wonderful things with this chapter, from the Valley of Horses to Boderi meeting Buffy and assuring her that wearing that 'green bag' is absolutely unnecessary!

I keep picturing Thernd as a little, pug-nosed, freckled faced red-headed Irish man. You know, the sort that loves his Guiness and can hold his own in a bar fight? The kind of guy that can tell dirty limericks until you're blue in the face? Yes, that sort of guy. All of that just from his dialogue. I don't know how close my picture of him is to yours, but that's what I have in my head.

And Raminus Polus! Just a class act all the way. I really liked how you presented him.

Boderi Farano comes across as a lovely woman/womer with a strong sense of practicality and independence. I think Julian would have liked her as well.

@treydog: The two paints may have been friends back when they were growing up at Wild Eye! Who knows?

This piece keeps surprising me, it follows the game mechanics fairly completely and the quests went more or less as seen but then occasionally it goes off in it's own direction. Like not bothering with the mages staff (as if all the recommendation quests weren't go-fetchy enough) and bringing in new characters and quests which fit within the game. It leads to a unique feel which I like, the slightly parodic tone and Buffy's characer fit in with it brilliantly.

And a new character, another bit of th competant face of the guild. Boderi sounds very practical and I look forward to seeing her teach Buffy new things, I'm also interested to see how you deal with either the necromancers or the oblivion crisis when one kicks off.

One question: it the arcane university system based on anything? My experience of university is far less organised - they probably wouldn't notice if I turned myself into a newt and would only be interested in research funding if I did (indeed I didn't technically exist last year).

I get the distinct impression that Thernd has a pot o’ gold that he’s hiding somewhere in the Valley of Horses. That’s probably what the imps are really protecting!

I love the way that you have expanded Buffy’s initial steps into the Arcane University. Raminus comes across as a competent and caring headmaster, as opposed to the slightly addled bureaucrat that the game gives us. I find myself sharing Buffy’s fondness for Boderi, I wonder if we will learn what her specialty as a battlemage is (I’m betting it’s not the bow). I am also eager to see what course of study Boderi recommends for the young archer now given into her charge.

i loved the description of the valley of horses, my argonian is yet to own one of the fine beasts (he's scared of them) and i also enjoyed the green bag, all adventurers need to look they're best and i don't think anyone can make apprentice robes look good laugh.gif

In Chapter 16, Buffy discovered the Valley of Horses with its wonderful stables. She then settled into the Arcane University to begin her education.

Foxy- Yes, Buffy can get preoccupied with her wardrobe. happy.gif

SubRosa- I see you are familiar with the origin of 'Valley of Horses'. I'm so pleased you thought it added to things. In game, Buffy stages Superian under that very bridge, while in the IC, to avoid the other stables run by that horse-snacking orc! We felt the beautiful mare deserved better than a lonely bridge to stand under. Thank you for the wonderful comments!

treydog- Thank you for pointing out some of the aspects in the last pair of episodes that you liked. Your words are like a soothing potion that helps keep us on track.

Rider- Thank you! I love your observations. I grinned as I read your vision of Thernd. I wanted to give him a 'voice' and he emerged as sort of a horse-absorbed leprechaun. I have always seen Raminus Polus as a class act, and am glad you liked him. Yes, Boderi will persist as another important influence on Buffy.

Olen- Thank you for the kind words! Please forgive me a few paragraphs of rumination. I have trouble describing or categorizing Buffy's story as well. Heck, I'm just lucky to try and keep up with her as she flits about. panic.gif

The tactics and physics she uses are indeed quite close to her in-game world. Her approach and priorities regarding quests are not. The tasks she sets for herself will include quests that are in the game and some that are not. Even the in game quests she does will often reflect a fair amount of expansion and license. As you can see, Raminus Polus has already somewhat short circuited the mages guild questline, for now.

The death of the Emperor and the gate at Kvatch however, are important aspects of the game that we retain. Therein lies a dilemma. Although thrust into the beginning of the Oblivion crisis, Buffy lacks the maturity, wisdom, courage, skills and motivation to assist at Kvatch. Yet, it is rather unrealistic that Mehrunes Dagon and Savlian Matius would wait the next 100 or so episodes that it will take Buffy to gain the tools she needs to attempt closing an Oblivion gate. We will unabashedly rely upon the magic of the game that somehow allows prosecuting the Main Quest to be delayed without ill effect indefinitely.

This is decidedly a plot weakness, but it is absolutely critical to the story in this, her first book. It will be during her second book that we will deal with the post-Kvatch portion of the Oblvion crisis. I expect we will be able to do so with much more realistic pacing. Such is the beauty of learning from the wonderful writers here.

We are decidedly writing from the perspective that the journey is more important than the destination. My hope is for her story to be viewed more as a long-running TV show than a tightly plotted movie.

The Arcane University in BF is only based on my own idealized hopes and ideas of what it could/should be.

Destri- Heh, I just couldn't resist the non-TES accent on Thernd! During Buffy's 'school daze', she will learn some about herself, ask pointed questions about some aspects of magic, and be schooled by the wonderful Boderi in some bow + magic tactics. In order to limit her University time to two more episodes, we shall be doing some 'telling' that reflects the passage of time, interspersed with dropping in to a few live scenes of 'show + dialogue'. I hope it is effective.

MyCat- Thanks for reading! I guess Buffy has resolved once and for all whether she will become a robe-wearing mage.

hazmick- I'm so glad you enjoyed the Valley of Horses. It really wowed Buffy - unlike that green bag. tongue.gif

17 The Arcane University Part 2- Classes and Study

During the initial testing and evaluation of my abilities, I learned some things about being a half-breed. I already knew of course that no one would ever mistake me for a Breton. I was a Bosmer like my mother, albeit kind of a small one. I could expect a lifespan that might cross several centuries and had the Bosmeri eyes of an archer.

It was in my special abilities that the mixed heritage showed. I had good aptitude for magic and some resistance to harmful spell effects. We attributed that to my father, although I did not gain his Bretonic shield power. That I lacked the Beast Tongue special power and disease resistance of a Bosmer was no surprise. Despite the mystical bond I had with Superian, I had to rely on Kud-Ei's illusion spells to command even a mudcrab. As far as diseases, I recalled several times when City Swimmer teased me about my lack of hardiness. It seemed every time I got nipped by a rat while helping her search for food behind the taverns, she was dragging me into the Chapel of Mara to be cured of bone break fever.

I settled into a 'uniform' of sorts: Laced leather pants, a brown blouse like my advisor wore and leather boots.

Boderi guided my progress, as I learned additional spell effects. We then applied that knowledge and created spells using the altars in the Praxographical Center. At first, they were just weak ones that I could use to improve my magic skills. Later, I crafted stronger spells that had some real use and power. As a result of wearing boots, we learned that I was different than Boderi and other mages. Despite running around with bits of light armor, my spells were inexplicably just as effective as if I wore no armor at all.

The beautifully restful University gardens had been carefully cultivated to provide both a display of color as well as a vast sampling of useful herbs, flowers, seeds, roots and fungi. The instructors in the Lustratorium helped me study the plants and unlock more of their alchemical properties. Gradually, I developed the ability to mix a wide variety of helpful potions and poisons.

Given my desire to craft a magical bow someday, I was not surprised to discover how much I enjoyed our classes on enchanting. . . .

"Who knows how to cast a water breathing spell?" All six of us seated in the Chironasium raised our hands. The old Redguard looked pleased and continued, "Today, we're going to learn how to infuse an item with a useful magic property. I need one volunt-"

My hand was in the air before Delmar could finish his request. White teeth contrasted with his dark skin as he flashed a grin. "I see Buffy is anxious to enchant something." He motioned me to his side. Fishing into the folds of his white robes, he produced a small gray item. "Here, do you know what this is?"

"A soul gem," I declared as I took the cool smooth stone. "I've seen plenty of them in the guild halls."

The Redguard nodded. "This is a petty soul gem, one of several types categorized by size and how much energy they can contain. Now, as you see, this one has a flat color. It will display a slight glow after we fill it. Buffy, have you learned how to cast a soul trap spell yet?"

"Yes, Boderi taught me last week."

"Good." Delmar raised his hand and released a lavender burst of magicka in front of him. A skeleton quickly materialized. "Hold onto that soul gem and cast your spell."

Magic flew from my right hand and engulfed the summon. Almost immediately, Delmar struck the skeleton with a bolt of lightning and the bones evaporated, accompanied by a distinctive, musical tone. The soul gem vibrated slightly in my hand, and it did indeed have a soft shimmer now.

"Well done, Apprentice," said Delmar as he held up my hand so everyone could see the results. "Now, before we move on, are there any questions about soul gems?"

"I understand they are destroyed when used," one of the two Altmer students in the class asked. "How are new soul gems created?"

"They are fashioned from simple granite," replied Delmar. "The rock is mined, then processed by artisans who deliver the carefully shaped stones to the University. Specially trained mages working in our east tower facility then infuse the stones with the magic necessary to finish the process. Although we use a large number of the finished gems right here, many of them are sold to magic merchants throughout the Empire."

A small Khajiit raised her hand. In response to Delmar's nod, she timidly asked, "Isn't it wrong to use the souls of other beings to create magic items or recharge our weapons?"

"Excellent question, Zahrasha," began the Redguard thoughtfully. "You see, the term 'soul gem' is horribly inaccurate, no doubt coined by those who fear what they do not understand. We are not capturing souls. Hence, the summoned skeleton who possessed no soul, spirit or life, was able to fill our gem just fine."

"What of deer and other creatures?" I interjected.

Delmar turned to face me and smiled. "Be at ease, Bosmer. Gathering the residual magic that animates the movement of a deer does not enslave its spirit any more than harvesting the flesh it no longer requires after death." The Redguard wrinkled his brow and scratched his bald head for a moment. "Think of it this way. You are capturing the same energy you see when using detect life - also an erroneous term. If you had cast a detect life spell, you would have seen the undead skeleton who just assisted with our class glow brightly. He had no life force however, simply a magical energy that animated his limbs. That is what we captured."

Delmar again reached into the folds of his robe, this time producing an unremarkable copper ring. "Now, class, follow Buffy and I over to one of the enchanting altars. Let's create a ring of water breathing."

As the weeks passed, I became quite adept with the altars. Boderi told me to delay enchanting a bow for now, so I focused on making other useful items. My many friends at school included several of the Imperial Battlemages that guarded the University. I managed to sweet talk Cassius Vinipter out of one of his blue hoods. They weighed almost nothing and he told me they took well to magic. Once enchanted with a weak frost effect, I figured the hood was just perfect for keeping venison fresh while traveling. I also crafted a small assortment of useful rings that could assist me around water and in dark caves.

While showing off my collection of rings to Boderi, we learned that I could wear several of them at once. It seemed other mages could only wear two at a time. As with my ability to cast fully powered spells wearing armor, we had no idea how to explain this new aspect of my defective uniqueness. I liked it just fine though, since it gave me lots of flexibility in what I could wear.

I adored studying the old texts in the Mystic Archives. Tar-Meena could make them come alive, and I became a voracious reader. I enjoyed a wide variety of subjects ranging from Ayleid culture and the Nine Divines, to the mysteries of Daedra Lords. I particularly enjoyed plotting the locations of various ruins and shrines from the books onto my map. I hoped I might visit them, and perhaps even discover more such places on my own.

Tar-Meena was also considered the University's authority on necromancy. She often received inquiries about the subject from the Council of Mages. One day, I asked her about the black robes. "We're learning how to summon skeletons in class, Tar-Meena. Why are necromancers so different from us?"

The Argonian quietly responded, "The skeletons and zombies of necromancers are not summoned or created from magic," her orange eyes widened, "but the actual corpses of men and mer that have been reanimated by black soul gems. How would you like it if, after you died, someone defiled your body as a toy to do their bidding?"

With a small shudder, I replied, "I encountered a necromancer once. He said he wanted to turn me into a plaything." I quickly added in response to the alarm registering on Tar-Meena's face, "Fortunately my bow was faster that he was. His lair was full of corpses. It was awful, Tar-Meena, but it makes more sense now."

"You are lucky to have survived, Buffy. If they can't find fresh corpses, they are quite willing to kill innocents to create them. I'm sure that is why Arch Mage Traven banned the practice of necromancy within the guild."

I wondered aloud, "Delmar said soul gems only capture the residual magic that animates movement, not souls or spirits. Are black soul gems different? I found two of them."

"How did you. . . oh, that's right. Deetsan's report said you were the one who discovered those black soul gems in Falcar's quarters." Tar-Meena shook her head. "They are different from normal soul gems only in that they can capture the residual energy from men, mer, and those of us fortunate enough to have tails. Necromancers apparently prefer to use them in their rituals because the humanoid magic that only black soul gems can contain is quite powerful, and it more realistically animates the corpses they work with. Enough of this unpleasant talk though."

Buffy is at the Arcane University and is going to classes and studying? What kind of craziness is this? None of my characters ever had to do boring stuff like that there. It's a University, she ought to be going to toga parties! biggrin.gif

Seriously though, it is nice to see the University as being an actual place of learning. Where in the game it is just a place to make spells and magic items. I see you are also using Buffy's learning as an opportunity to explain how somethings work in the game. Such as soul gems, Buffy's abilities, etc...

The scene with Delmar was particularly nice, as well as being informative (in that he shows the simple way to fill soul gems in the game, summon a critter and kill it). Likewise with your description of how soul gems are created and what they really do.

Buffy creating a refrigerator using a mage hood and frost spell was simply brilliant!

nits:
I'm sure that is why Arch Mage Traven banned the practice of necromancy within the guild.
This is a nit on the part of Bethesda. Why NPCs all say Traven banned necromancy is beyond me. If you look through The Black Arts On Trial, necromancy was never allowed in the Mages Guild, right from when it was founded by Vanus Galerion. It is just that there have been some archmagisters who have ignored the strictures against necromancy, and allowed it to go on.

A wonderful job of illustrating Buffy’s weaknesses and strengths.

The soul trapping description was quite vivid and worked very well. In fact, the whole discussion of “soul gems” and “detect life” was a treat and does a far better job of explaining TES magical physics than does the game.

Tar-Meena- “…and those of us fortunate enough to have tails.”

Now that is an absolutely brilliant bit of writing!

This whole installment was delightful.

I enjoyed this chapter as it not only gave a good insight into Buffy's heritage but also explained some of the 'in-game' questions that all good gamers think about. You have done a great job describing the Arcane University as the busy place of learning it should be rather than the dull, empty place that we see in the game where people wander around being rude. Good job with Tar-Meena as well biggrin.gif

Yay, super happy fun time with Necromancy! It's a good play on how it actually works because in the original Oblivion...barely any explanation is given which makes me sad panda.

I second approval of the tail comment, very argonian (and true too, I'm sure a tail would be useful). And lots of useful rings, I can just sense that she'll need them all given time.

But really learning? So soon after starting uni? Though I suppose if the lessons were that good it would be an incentive. "How was uni?" Somehow answering "I made a magical ring and won't ever need a scuba set" is better than, "The [insert appuratus here] didn't work, again".

I think our resident Sage has had occasion to teach in his distinguished career. The lesson on soul gems, soul trap, and detect life (or should that be ‘detect magicka’?) spells was as engaging as it was informative. The faculty in your version of the Arcane University is worth whatever the Guild is paying them. You can sign me up for classes with Delmar anytime.

I like the way that you are covering Buffy’s education through a mixture of narration and detail. Going through her day by day activities at the University would probably get old.

Buffy seems to be getting a lot more out of university than I ever did. For me it was a fountain of knowledge where students go to drink.

Strangely my character can wear multiple rings and amulets too. (Thanks to what I learned about mods from the original BF. That just means that she goes into scarier OOO areas earlier than she could otherwise. It doesn't always end well.)

16 – Wow, this Buffy story gets better and better with each post. I really love the way that you are weaving in the new description into the Chorrol version. That is an awesome amount of thought and detail you have put into the story. The University lesson was a great read and more importantly a great instructional guide. Chapter 17 found Buffy deeply into arcane academia as she learned things about herself, spellcrafting, soul gems, enchanting and alchemy. She also discovered a love for the old texts of the Mystic Archives.

SubRosa- Buffy, toga parties? You'll note how much she enjoys her bling in this screenshot!

Thank you for the wonderful observations. We tried to give the impression of some real learning going on, as well as attempting to address some obvious questions about how things work in the game; Not that we have it all figured out, but at least hopefully reasonable explanations for BF. Heh, she has always worried about carrying around venison (or crabmeat) in her warm pack - not anymore!

Rider- Thanks for the nits, so I could fix them!

Finally, it was nice to lay out exactly what it means that Buffy had a Bosmer mother and Breton father.

'Those of us fortunate enough to have tails.' I was trying to cover all the 'sort of humanoid' races. Men and mer often imply this just fine, but not when talking with an Argonian or Khajiit of course. I'm glad it lent a smile to the otherwise grim subject of necromancy.

treydog- There was a lot of 'data' to weave into this episode, ranging from Buffy's heritage to some unique minor powers she has, to explanations of how certain aspects of magic work (at least in her BF world). All this while trying to provide the impression of time passing and learning being accomplished without overusing 'tell vs show'. I'm glad it seems to have worked.

hazmick- I'm so glad you share our view that the University should be more than simply providing access to altars and distributing MG quests. Thank you.

Zerker- Thank you. "We're learning how to summon skeletons in class, Tar-Meena. Why are necromancers so different from us?" That is a question I have wondered forever and I'm glad Buffy asked it.

Olen- Thank you! You ask a wonderful question that requires a touch of detail to answer. Buffy does have those two minor special abilities - multiple rings and no spellcasting penalty for armor -

In her story, the origin of these special abilities is intentionally a small mystery at this point. How and why she has them will become clear in about six to eight episodes, so let me keep mum for the moment on that.

In her game, those abilities are provided by a pair of small mods. The no armor penalty mod is handy for an illusionist who, for fashion reasons, fancies leather boots with her clothes or sometimes wears the Arena raiment. The multi-ring mod allows her to focus the few enchantments she wants on her rings instead of on the massive wardrobe that supports frequent outfit changes to suit her task at hand.

In reality, Buffy has completed the adventures that comprise this, her first book. Despite over 400 hours of play however, she has intentionally not completed quests beyond this book. We spend our days enjoying a myriad of wonderful activities and exploration that do not advance any quests. At level 20, she is near her top design level (four major skills that she will never touch cap her at level 23). She typically wears no rings in town. When adventuring, she normally wears a pair of powerful detect life rings (she will get those in a dozen chapters or so). When necessary she will briefly augment her fingers with a utility ring such as water breathing or night eye. She actually uses very few enchantments beyond her utility rings and bow. She was born with a Breton's resistance to magic and can easily boost her poor armor rating via potion or spell for the rare times she needs it.

Destri- Thank you. I must admit that, at my age, I tend to identify with the professorial faculty at the University more than the students. Hopefully, Buffy's sharp elbow is enough to remind me of her younger perspective. Thank you for endorsing the tough choices I made regarding tell (to cover time and ground) vs show (to maintain some vibrance).

MyCat- I am humbled that your character was inspired by the original BF to install the multi-ring mod. It is comments like this that keep us grounded in the fact that it is indeed our intent to include a touch of 'how to play a mystic archer' in our story. Thank you for affirming that!

Wolf- Green bags, humans as ' short lived round ears', no Bosmeri special powers for Buffy, lots of lessons. . . Thanks so much for the wonderful comments! Except for her odd manner of dress, Buffy fit right into the University and was a compliant student. It's that little wildcat prankster that nearly turned the place upside down!

And now, the final episode of 'The Arcane University' -

18 The Arcane University Part 3- Practice and Field Trips

In addition to endless classes, reading and study, there was practice. And practice, followed by more practice. I spent hours trying to master what Boderi called 'chasing my arrow'. She meant shooting an arrow, then rapidly following it with a spell. The practice targets were rapidly and repeatedly pierced, then demoralized. As soon as I could do that pretty well, she made it harder. 'Chasing my spell' - I would cast a soul trap spell for example, then nock and shoot my arrow into the target as quickly as I could. Boderi said both techniques would serve me well. I was amazed at her expertise in combining magic and weaponry. She could also be quite the taskmaster. . . .

"Again, Apprentice!"

"Boderi," I moaned, "my left arm's tired. I'm not as strong as you."

"I don't care that you're tired," the Dunmer snapped, "I care that you're alive." Her voice then softened somewhat, but her eyes lost none of their fiery determination. "Buffy, you possess the indomitable spirit of a dragon, but the frailty of a butterfly. That is a hazardous combination."

Boderi lowered her steel short sword. "Look, I know you're a sniper that thrives in shadow at long range. Nevertheless, there will be times when you are forced into close quarters combat. That's what I'm trying to drill into you today. I can work with your refusal to use melee weapons. In fact, eschewing blades allows us to focus exclusively on developing your bow, and the magic skills necessary to support it. I'm going to forge you into a mystic archer that can survive in combat, young lady. Is that clear?"

The raised eyebrow that accompanied her question did not invite debate, or even words. I nodded rapidly.

The Dunmer continued, "Muscle memory. It's not enough that we crafted a spell to strengthen your bow like a powerful shield. The casting of it needs to be an instinctive reaction. The very act of raising your left arm to block must trigger magicka to flow into your bow without even thinking about it. That takes practice. Even more so for you, since you're not used to casting with your left hand." Boderi raised her blade. With red eyes flashing, she barked, "Again!"

I lifted my left hand defensively, and magic raced down my arm. When it reached the bow clenched in my fist, the white glow burst and enveloped my weapon. Boderi's blade hit the brightly glowing bow squarely. The impact jarred my shoulder, but I was otherwise unharmed. Just as importantly, close inspection revealed my bow to be undamaged. Thanks to this new spell, I hoped never again to have a bow staff cracked or damaged beyond repair when I was forced to block with it.

"Better, Apprentice." Boderi pushed a pitcher of water into my hand. I greedily drained it and set the pewter vessel on a nearby table in the practice room. "Now," she continued, "you can't block your enemy to death. You must be able to quickly shift to the offense. This time, after you reinforce your bow and block my blade, use your right hand and cast a weak charm spell to simulate that you've paralyzed me. I'll kneel as soon as you do that. Within two seconds of my knee hitting the floor I expect to see your arrow slam into the training dummy behind me. Remember- block, immobilize, shoot." She raised her blade.

*

My favorite part of the training was what we called 'field trips'. There were some things that just couldn't be done so well inside the University. These outings were also welcome breaks. Sneaking into the basement of The Main Ingredient, I mapped out the Market Sewers and popped up in the alley over behind Edgar's Discount Spells. Exploring and hunting the hills and caves of Imperial Isle, I practiced my growing skills.

Superian loved the Valley of Horses, and Thernd was wonderful with her. Every day, the mare and I spent at least a short time together. I made sure to show her my growing skills and new spells, so she would become used to them. After all, the wonderful education I was getting was for both of us. I became convinced that it was the bond forged between Acadian and I that had opened my mind to the path of mystical communication with Superian.

The old paladin was with me constantly, and he never seemed to tire of my prattling on. Boderi had earned his respect, and I knew he was glad that she was my advisor. When not beating on me with her sword, the beautiful and wise dark elf could actually be quite kind.

Upon learning that Rohssan, at A Fighting Chance, had finally taught me how to repair magical items, Boderi and I began to enchant weapons. We made several magic bows so I could try different enchantments during my training outings. Boderi insisted every bow include a brief soul trap enchantment, and that I carry an assortment of small soul gems. It quickly became clear that my preference was for bows that delayed, confused, frightened or immobilized foes. I left the powerful grummite bow unenchanted for now.

Several mornings, I woke up feeling strangely more capable. I attributed it to the amount of practice my skills were getting. Somehow I was becoming wiser, more nimble on my feet and better able to control my own will. Each time this happened, I donned my blue raiment and, like a moth drawn to a torch, reported to the Arena for a match. I had no idea why I felt compelled to do this, especially considering how frightening it was. I didn't ask my advisor or even my paladin, I just marched off and did it - butterflies and all. Regardless, I survived, leaving grim testimony to Boderi's lethal lessons in the bloody sands of the Arena.

Most of my field trips were local. One was not.

"Welcome back, Apprentice!" Boderi exclaimed. "I trust Bothiel ensured you received a new special power after you delivered the parts that allowed the repair of her precious Orrery?"

After a soft sigh, I replied, "She did."

Concern clouded Boderi's face. "Child, you look deeply troubled. What's the matter?"

"Well, it's just that Bothiel had asked the guild at Kvatch to do that same task quite some time ago. The only reason she gave me the job is because Kvatch is. . . ." My throat became thick and I blinked to hold back tears.

The Dunmer placed a steady hand on each of my cheeks and gently raised my face. "Buffy, even though you didn't know them, it's natural for you to mourn our brothers and sisters from the Kvatch chapter. Their loss breaks my heart as well. Thank the Nine that at least Sigrid survived. Had the invasion of Kvatch not happened, I suspect Morandor, the guild head there, would have asked you to complete Bothiel's task for your recommendation. In recovering the stolen parts to repair the Orrery, you have done well by the Kvatch chapter." She lowered her hands and turned to pour us each a cup of tea.

"Thank you Boderi. You always know what to say." I managed a weak smile as I accepted the warm ceramic cup.

"So tell me how it went, Buffy."

"Superian and I had to wander north of the Gold Road, from west of Skingrad all the way to the Abacean Sea. I certainly got plenty of bow and spell practice, but did I really need to go so far away to hunt bandits, wolves and boar? Oh, and I don't understand this special power at all."

Boderi started to explain. "Bothiel assigned you the task at my request. I had a couple reasons for-"

I interrupted, "Of course you did, my advisor, my mentor, my friend. I learned a long time ago that everything you do seems to have several purposes somehow all woven together."

Boderi smiled. "Field practice with your new equipment and skills was reason enough. There are several special powers the Orrery can grant, but all of them enable you to craft spells and enchant with the effect of 'drain attribute'. That's the other reason I sent you. I will leave discovering some of its potential to your post University studies; however, I would suggest you consider the possibilities of draining the speed of your opponents."

My eyes flew open wide. "P-post University studies?" I was not prepared for that.

"Yes," Boderi said, "you have proven yourself to be a wonderful young illusionist, and Kud-Ei will be proud of you. You also have an uncanny empathic ability to assess wounds and heal others; I encourage you to further develop this natural restorative talent. You have satisfactorily completed your lessons in alchemy, alteration, mysticism and conjuration."

"And destruction?" I asked with an apprehensive wince.

"You passed." Boderi chuckled as she set our empty tea cups aside.

"I'm afraid my fire spells are mostly good for lighting torches, cooking or heating bathwater," I pouted. "I'm afraid I'm not much better with ice or lightning. I guess I'll never be a Delphine Jend."

Boderi lifted a dark eyebrow. "And as fine a mage as Delphine the Destructionist is, she will never be a Buffy the Bowgirl." The Dunmer gracefully lowered herself to a nearby bench, smoothed her skirt and touched the spot next to her. "Sit with me." I did so, and she placed a hand over mine.

"You're a fine mystic archer. Like a battlemage, you have blended weapon and magic to devastating effect. Your talent for destruction magic does not lie with the elements. Keep practicing until you can master weakness to poison and efficiently cast your new drain speed ability. Only then, will the beauty of destruction magic fully merge with your path. You now have the knowledge and tools to continue your studies. Magic is a lifelong endeavor, Buffy. Your formal program of study here however, is complete." She then stood, as did I, and with feigned formality, stated, "Congratulations, Apprentice!"

I beamed. She smiled. We hugged.

I knew I would be back from time to time. In fact, I already had a very specific arcane project in mind. . . .

"I beamed. She smiled. We hugged."- Brilliant tongue.gif that wrapped up the university very nicely.

Great screenies. Buffy the Bookworm, perhaps? biggrin.gif

You have caught my interest with the next arcane project, it sounds quite exciting.

A thoroughly delightful and informative chapter all in one! This chapter really shone for me in several ways. I am glad you went back and reworked and added so much to these early chapters, as they add much more depth to Buffy, the supporting cast, and the world.

Seeing the Buffster grow under the tutelage of Boderi was a wonderful treat. More than once I was reminded of a certain pale Bosmer learning similar lessons from her "Pappy".

I spent hours trying to master what Boderi called 'chasing my arrow'.
At MSU, this would be done with tequila! biggrin.gif

The bow-shield spell was a very creative way of integrating the game's reality of being able to block with a bow, with the physics of the real world, where such a thing would destroy a strung bow. Nicely done! Also a subtle nod to the process of Buffy leveling up, and her customary arena match each time.

Oh, and that last picture was just priceless!

adventuress sounds a little odd. How about lion or dragon instead?

That last screenie is brilliant smile.gif

I agree with Subrosa that her leveling up is well handled, while it's clearly happening it would have been a bit too 'gamey' to have done it with her falling asleep and waking up better for unknown reasons, but it sits with the feel of the piece that she gets better as time passes - the arena matches (and general feel) conveyed that well, but subtley.

And now she's more of a finished product I wonder what she'll do. Shopping possibly...

I agree with others about that last screenshot. Still too familiar to me from years of hard studying!

QUOTE
It's not enough that we crafted a spell to strengthen your bow like a powerful shield. The casting of it needs to be an instinctive reaction. The very act of raising your left arm to block must trigger magicka to flow into your bow without even thinking about it. That takes practice.
Julian agrees wholeheartedly!

It's good that you show the Arcane University as being good for leveling up your magical skills, and having Boderi train Buffy in her combat skills as well. It all makes wonderful sense for our blonde mystic archer.

I too am wondering about Buffy's next arcane project!

Buffy's time at the University is wonderfully described, capturing the feeling of immersive learning.

I don't care that you're tired," the Dunmer snapped, "I care that you're alive."

Senior Trooper Carbo of the Imperial Legion heartily approves- “I intend to make you wish you were dead during training so you won’t be dead in battle.”

I became convinced that it was the bond forged between Acadian and I that had opened my mind to the path of mystical communication with Superian.

The detail you lavish on Buffy's skills, as honed and augmented by her studies is a textbook example (pun alert) of how to create and roleplay a custom character class. But it goes beyond that- it makes Buffy unique and special (of course, we already knew that).

In Chapter 18, Buffy was schooled on the practical application of blending magic and bow. She was then assigned opportunities to practice her growing skills beyond the schoolhouse walls. Finally, she completed her studies and training at the Arcane University as a mystic archer, specialized in illusion.

hazmick- I'm so glad you enjoyed how Buffy wrapped up her University 'daze'.

SubRosa- Thank you for affirming our efforts to enrich BF 2.0. smile.gif

I'm so pleased you liked Boderi's solution to bow blocking. See my comment to Foxy.

Thank you for the recommendation. I changed adventuress to dragon, which has already earned Destri's approval, thanks to you.

Olen- An Arena match per level up is a tradition that we retain to remind ourselves that, although Buffy doesn't fully realize it, she does live in a wonderful game world. Most of these fights take place 'off camera', but for the next one that makes it into the story, I expect she will actually count the notches on her raiment and indirectly let us know what level she is at the time. Thank you.

Rider- I'm glad you and Julian endorse the 'train till it's automatic' / muscle memory style of Boderi. Buffy is so very fortunate that her advisor is a hardnosed battlemage who understands how to use magic to make a weapon sing. Thank you!

treydog- Thank you for the wonderful words! We tried to show how and where Buffy learned the foundations for some of her key survival tactics. Thank you for agreeing about the hint of similarity in the relationships of Acadian-Buffy and Buffy-Superian.

Foxy- Thank you! It was you who, so very long ago, pointed out the flaw in Buffy blocking with her bow. It took us this long to sort out a proper TES solution.

Destri- High praise indeed from a master of prose. Thank you so much for appreciating Buffy's new appellation as dragon-butterfly girl. As you can see from the comments, the dragon part was suggested by wonderful SubRosa.

mALX- Thank you! You know a screenie is worth a thousand words!

Thank you for several wonderful compliments regarding the screenshots in Buffy's yearbook. Completing her 'undergraduate' work at the University marks the real beginning of Buffy carving her own unique path in Cyrodiil. She still lacks some of the tools and trinkets she needs to survive, so I expect her 'special arcane project' has something to do with 'what a girl wants, what a girl needs'. wink.gif

19 A Secret Mission

As Superian eased into a small sunny clearing beside the Gold Road, I slid to the ground and silently began to creep the short distance towards Ra'sava Camp. Releasing a burst of magicka, I assessed the three pink glows that erupted ahead as two bandits and their dog. Finally, I had a spell to display life signs that had both the range and duration I needed. After quietly scouting around the camp, I settled into my chosen firing position and reached for the steel handgrip of the bow on my back.

Patiently, I studied the camp's inhabitants over the poisoned broad head tip of my nocked arrow. By concentrating on my target I had recently learned to greatly enhance the detail I could see at range. Presently, the farthest glow snapped into sharp focus as a Bosmeri archer. I smoothly applied full tension to the bowstring and loosed the arrow. The bandit's glow extinguished within a few seconds, but judging from his companion's quick and erratic movements, I was detected.

Without turning my back to the threat, I quickly backed out onto the road as I reached into my quiver. A leather-clad Redguard burst from the trees about ten paces in front of me. The bow's first strike caused her to stop, stow her mace and begin to run away. After retreating a couple steps, the fear enchantment wore off and she turned to charge again. By then, the magic bow released a second arrow, which restarted the process. She fell to my third arrow. The enchantment compensated for the lower damage of this steel-trimmed bow. Besides, I had better plans for my powerful old grummite bow. Ra'sava Camp was part of those plans.

I crept back into the brush. The dog's glow was stationary. I hadn't minded killing the bandits - in fact, I rather enjoyed it. I realized that given the opportunity, they would have gleefully returned the favor. The dog was another matter. Killing him would give me no pleasure. I figured he would attack me on sight though, and I did want his camp. I would not risk magically frightening him away, for I feared he would only skulk back at night to attack my mare and I.

I focused beyond my arrow's tip and the animal came sharply into view. In the bandits' absence, he was helping himself to the hindquarter of a deer on the cooking spit. I began to draw full tension, then stopped and eased the bowstring forward. For Mara's sake, Buffy, don't get soft; a lack of grim resolve is a good way to get yourself killed. I steeled myself and pulled feathers to cheek again, only to pause once more. Exasperated, I unnocked the arrow. I sighed, then blew a wayward strand of hair from my face. Oh, who knows? Perhaps with the pair of bandits dead, I might be able to sweet talk the dog.

I shouldered the weapon to appear less threatening and readied a spell to paralyze the animal if I needed time to bring my bow to bear. Trying to appear calm and confident, I approached the camp. "My name's Buffy," I purred softly. As the dog noticed me, the fur on his back rose, but he did not charge. "Don't make me regret this. Choose to live." I was sure the dog cued more on my gentle tone than words, but the hackles lowered slightly and his flattened ears lifted.

There was a mere three paces between us when I squatted down and softly kissed the air a few times. "What's your name?" As he tentatively approached, I extended a hand, ready to paralyze or pet him. After a few suspicious sniffs, he sat down in front of me. A moment later, the dog's big head was leaning into my hand as I scratched behind his ear. There was no danger here.

As I stepped back to the road, I could see Superian standing patiently where I had left her. After a knowing glance between us, I turned and walked the few steps back to the camp. The sound of hooves followed me.

The dog and horse approached each other cautiously. I was still quite ready to immobilize and kill this dog if he threatened Superian. Two noses touched and I breathed a sigh of relief. "You pass inspection, dog. How about sharing some of your venison with a hungry wood elf? I have a thirsty mare who would appreciate access to your rain barrel as well."

It was late afternoon as I finished gathering firewood to augment the camp's meager supply. Ra'sava was going to be home, perhaps for several days. Satisfied with the condition of the camp, I finally sat down in front of the fire to work on my equipment and think. And wait.

I had camped here quite some time ago, while traveling west from Skingrad to earn my University recommendations. I remembered a cone of light connecting the sky to the ground had appeared nearby. Following the lavender beam to its destination, I had discovered it was illuminating a white altar in front of Fort Istirius. The pair of red banners draped over the altar were each emblazoned with a black skull and bones. I had seen the same symbol, colors reversed, on the robes of a necromancer deep inside Vilverin. Body parts of men or mer, in various states of decay, littered the area around the altar. Aside from being anxious to get away from the fort, I hadn't thought too much of it at the time.

Much more recently, as I retrieved dwarven artifacts for Bothiel to repair her Orrery, I noticed a similar light as I was traveling from Camp Bodean to the Gottshaw Inn. At the bottom of the cone of light was an identical altar in front of Fort Linchal. This time it made a bit more sense. I had recalled reading about such things in the Mystic Archives while at the University.

I stirred my campfire with an unusable arrow recovered from one of the bandits, and glanced at Superian as she peacefully grazed. The dog was comfortably curled up near the fire. I remembered asking Tar-Meena about the altars. . . .

"Sssshhh! We are hesitant to talk about necromantic rituals around here," Tar-Meena said, with the precise enunciation and expressive orange eyes that so endeared Argonian women to me. "My only interest in it is academic, but even that is discouraged." She had then looked around the stacks of the Mystic Archives to ensure no one else could hear us. "It is refreshing actually, to talk with someone who has a similar interest in what makes those crazy cultists do what they do. Read this, then we will talk more." She had handed me the book 'Necromancer's Moon'. "Falcar was the last one to be interested in this book but I am beginning to think, after Deetsan sent those black soul gems to the University, perhaps his interest was more than academic."

Well, things began to make sense when I read that book - more so after I talked to Tar-Meena again. I was sure the mysterious light was called the Shade of the Revenant, and I had surmised what the altars were for.

I became convinced I could make my own black soul gems. Boderi, my advisor at the University, had been mystified as to why I decided not to enchant my grummite bow. I had told her it was because the weaker bows forced me to let the enchantments do most of the work. The real reason though, was as clear to me as a sunrise over Niben Bay the morning after a storm. The most powerful enchantments were those created with a full grand soul gem. I had never seen a creature emit that much energy upon death, but I knew that men and mer did. The problem was that humanoid energy could only be captured by a black soul gem. It was simple, really - I wanted a bandit-powered bow.

I had kept Tar-Meena's book, and studied it now by the campfire. I waited until after midnight, frequently looking skyward south of the Gold Road. Be patient, Buffy. Maybe tomorrow.

I stared at the silver-gray fur of our new companion resting by the fire. He probably weighed more than I, and looked as much wolf as dog. Superian liked him though, and that was the best endorsement for what I had in mind. If he would follow us, I would deliver him to Thernd, the stable master at Equestria. I figured the dog would not only be good company for the lonely Bosmer, he would make a fine additional guardian for the Valley of Horses. "You didn't tell me your name, so I shall call you Bandit." Both ears and one eyelid raised.

The next day was spent napping, hunting, and checking the area between the camp and Fort Istirius for dangers.

Sitting by the fire that evening, I shared my kill with Bandit and hoped to see the Shade of the Revenant. I didn't know how long I might have to wait. Digging into my pack, I verified the three empty grand soul gems were there. I was glad I had put them into my magic bag within the pack, so they wouldn't be wasted capturing the energy of rats or mudcrabs by mistake. At one point, I nodded off and woke with a start. Afraid I might have missed it, I jumped to my feet and looked to the south. There was the eerie lavender beam of light! Scared and excited, I grabbed my bow and scrambled the short distance down the hill to Fort Istirius.

Standing under the light, I raised the stone cover of the altar and placed my grand soul gems inside. I remembered that part of 'Necromancer's Moon': '. . .when the heavenly light descends from above, hasten to His altars and make your offering, so that He may bless you with but a taste of His true power. Grand soul gems offered to Him will be darkened. . . .'

Next was the part I wasn't too sure about. Was there some sort of push block on this altar? Did I have to do something to make it work? No controls were visible. I peeked inside and my heart sank - the soul gems were still gray. I looked in the book again. Suddenly a phrase leapt from the page: '. . .cast your spells. . . .' That had to be it! But what kind of spell?

I blasted the altar with fire, frost and shock, lifting the cover to inspect my soul gems after each spell. Then I tried draining, damaging, healing and frightening it. Nothing. In desperation, I summoned a skeleton, but he just stood there, smirking at my frustration. I pondered the situation as I sipped a potion to help restore my depleted magicka. Soul trap? Well, that was worth a try.

Yes! One of my gems was now black. I quickly illuminated the altar in lavender magic twice more and grabbed my three brand new black soul gems. Even though there was no one near, I still looked around nervously and hid the gems in my magic bag. I then put the bag way in the bottom of my pack and started back to camp. Could I get kicked out the guild for this?

Next stop, Imperial City. I figured a visit to the Valley of Horses to deliver Bandit and stable Superian was in order. Then I was sure I could find a bandit down in the Market Sewers who would be happy to fill a black soul gem for me. Well, you know, once I explained that I needed his help to enchant my grummite bow.

"You pass inspection, dog."-I loved this line. A new friend to join the gang, how wonderful.

This is new, and very interesting. I liked how Buffy figured out the reason for those purple glows at certain spots around Cyrodiil.

I enjoyed reading about the dog - Bandit. I'm glad Buffy didn't kill him. At some point, Julian will acquire another animal companion, but the right moment hasn't arrived yet. So far she has to settle for just Paint.

Good idea giving Bandit to Thernd (my favorite Irish bar-fighter!) to add to the layers of protection around the Valley of Horses.

Overall, an enjoyable chapter!

At first, I found myself somewhat ambivalent about Buffy's flirtation with the "dark side" of magic. But- upon closer examination, it fits quite well with who she is- especially given the nature of soul-trapping and soul gems in the BF world. Because she is not trapping souls, she is trapping energy. A semantic distinction perhaps, but an important one.

But if she starts hanging around with Falanu, I will have to register a strong protest!

You painted that scene wonderfully.

So glad she did not choose to kill the dog- and I imagine he and Thernd will get on famously.

Once more a nice description of game mechanics (zooming in with archery) that fits smoothly into the narrative.

I rather enjoyed it.
Cuddly as a rattlesnake!

A very sweet deviation from the original concerning the dog. One thing I hate about the game is having to kill all those bandit dogs. Likewise, you offered an excellent solution to the problem of what to do with the dog now that its former master's are dead.

as clear to me as a sunrise over Niben Bay the morning after a storm.
A very vivid description that at the same time reinforces the setting!

I summoned a skeleton, but he just stood there, smirking at my frustration.
Lovely way of reinforcing Buffy's desperation, by her imagining a smirk on the skeleton's face!

And Buffy makes some black soul gems. She had better not let anyone at the Guild know about this! As treydog said, that Buffy is trapping energy rather than souls lessens the impact of her flirtation with the dark side. In fact, you might want to rethink whether or not the MG would still ban black soul gems based on how you have them working. I suppose they still might, because after all the only way to get the energy is to kill a person. Plus, the general public may not realize that they only take magicka, rather than souls. A righteous mob burning down the Arcane U would not be good for the guild's profit margin!

Here is hoping that Buffy starts hanging around with Falanu, but only after liberally coating herself in flour and learning to lay very, very still. wink.gif

Nice part, as Trey said her confusion at which spell to cast was great, and the description of her trying them was also well done.

QUOTE
Could I get kicked out the guild for this?

Well... yes. Certainly yu show the darkness in her again, she might be all for the guild and have liked Carahil but when she could get a better enchantment that goes out the window. Such flaws and hypocracies really make her come off the page as a living character. That she has no worries about going to find someone to kill to fill the gem is also somewhat alarming, she's certainly got an edge of madness that girl.

She also has a new companion, I wonder if she'll end up keeping him though. Her lack of desire to kill the dog was a good device, it is so her to happily kill two bandits but then save the dog. Great stuff.

One mild nit: I settled into my chosen firing position - although it would have made things longer it might have been worth showing her deciding where to shoot from rather than just having her do it. At least it made me want to know more.

MyCat
She is closer to my Bosmer assassin than I thought. My Bosmer Assassin's bow is named Earana smile.gif

Where is Acadian while Buffy is dabbling in the dark arts? I think you have stayed true to Buffy's character while expanding on it - I love this!
Destri Melarg
Ah, that's what I love about Buffy . . . she can talk herself into anything! wink.gif Only she could justify repeating the actions that got Falcar booted (presumably) from the Guild. I think mALX hit the nail on the head, Acadian was strangely silent during this chapter. Can we infer acceptance or approval from his silence? The inclusion of the dog Bandit was a clever bit of slight-of-hand to beguile us from the fact that our little wood elf is dabbling in necromancy. Innocently perhaps, but given her revulsion toward the necromancer she found in Vilverin I think it is safe to say that Olen is right about her capacity for being a little hypocritical.

That's what makes her such a brilliant character!
Acadian
In Chapter 19, Buffy displayed several contradictory aspects of her character as she learned and did what was necessary to create a black soul gem. It became clear that she had put a great deal of research and effort towards the task of powerfully enchanting her primary bow.

hazmick- Thanks! Yep, bandits make the best bows for a low level character that has never seen a creature with a grand soul. The only other alternative at low levels is to grind conjuration up to 100 (some of the top level summons have grand souls). An alternative for her story would have been to pretend that the University sold full grand soul gems and avoid the black soul gem controversy. We chose the black soul gem route in order to stay with the 'how to' aspect of her story.

Foxy- Yes. Based on what Buffy learned at the University, she had no qualms making and using black soul gems; she simply did not want to get caught and kicked out of her guild. Tar-Meena explained what a necromancer was. Buffy is quite comfortable that, despite performing a necromantic ritual, she is not 'animating dead people'.

Rider- Thank you so much! Letting the dog live was new for 2.0. It was not that long ago we learned in our game that if you approach a dog (not wolf) unarmed, he will not be hostile. He will attack if you draw a weapon though and the silly game will not let you sleep near him because 'enemies are near'. I think he'll be happy in the Valley of Horses. Buffy does indeed care more for animals than bandits and other humanoid varmints.

treydog- Thank you. We start with certain key elements of the game that we really want to retain as part of the 'how to play a mystic archer' aspect. We then try to craft somewhat reasonable explanations for why things work the way they do (zooming in with a bow, unable to cast spells on horseback, blocking with a bow, how to enchant with a grand soul at low level, etc). Then we hope that 'hey, it's a game' will help cover any gaps. tongue.gif Buffy is much more comfortable with soul gem energy as 'residual magic that animates movement'. If she thought killing a deer enslaved its spirit, she would have to join Teresa as a vegetarian!

SubRosa- Thank you so much. You coined Buffy 'cuddly as a rattlesnake' so very long ago, and I'm delighted she still conveys that here. The dog, of course, was a nod towards the 'cuddly' part in what was otherwise a somewhat dark portrayal of Buffy. As always, I love your insights into her. Thanks for the nit, so I could fix it.

Olen- As Boderi said, Buffy has the indomitable spirit of a dragon with the frailty of a butterfly. That drives her to do what she feels she must to survive. Since the only weapon she will touch is a bow, she believes having a powerful one is critical and is quite willing to take the necessary steps to accomplish this. That said, choices have consequences. Buffy's decision to break a rule of the guild will have small ripples for her on at least a couple occasions in the future. In fact the first consequence will be a tiny bit of squirming in her very next episode as her mouth almost gets her in trouble.

Thank you for your comments. You really make me think through things as Buffy so naturally dances between the darkness and the light. She loves killing bandits; the fact that they can help her create a powerful bow is a bonus. wink.gif

You are right, my friend, that adding detail on how she chose her firing position may have helped. Alas, you are also right that length was a significant concern. There are several areas that would have been fun to expand, but I really wanted that episode to fit comfortably into one post.

MyCat- Oooh! Naming your bow after Earana! Buffy is going to have to do something (from a cowardly dark shadow, of course embarrased.gif ) about that nasty rogue mage that would hurt her - just as soon as she gets a little more comfortable with her ability to do so.

Remko- Thanks! Like you, we never understood how you could 'capture the soul' of a skeleton or mudcrab. In BF 1.0, we didn’t worry much about those things, but Buffy is asking a lot harder questions of me in 2.0.

mALX- I'm glad you are enjoying this! Do you think she would actually listen to Acadian? Lol.

Destri- Buffy is indeed extremely adept at rationalizing. It usually boils back down to her frailty and the need to survive. She has taught me a great deal about what it is like to live in a dangerous land when you are small and weak. Keeping herself and her mare/friends alive trumps a lot of other considerations in her mind.

Acadian? He trusts in the underlying character of the bowgirl, and certainly hopes she will do what is necessary to survive - and crafting a powerful bow is a pretty important part of that. He realizes the way of a paladin would condemn the fragile elf to a short life. Rest assured, that if Buffy gets found out and kicked out the guild, she will quickly rationalize a way to blame Acadian for the whole mess. tongue.gif

*

So, how does Buffy feel about creating a black soul gem and using the dying energy of a bandit to craft her bow? She briefly addresses that herself in the next episode, while hopefully retaining the air of mystery that is the birthright of any young woman.

Speaking of mysteries, I must share with you that we are extremely excited going forward. Buffy's new and powerfully enchanted bow launches the first episode of a seven part miniseries that we call 'Child of Dawn'. While I hope each piece is interesting in itself, the themes are interwoven and tie together at the end in what I hope is a satisfying story with a touch of mystery.

Daenlin carefully examined my grummite bow with the experienced hands that had taught me to hunt. As he turned it, a soft red glow fleetingly whispered of the power within.

It felt so good to be in Bravil! My visit to the Imperial City had been a short one. Thernd had been happy to have Bandit the dog join the stables and the two of them hit it off wonderfully. After filling my black soul gem in the Market Sewers and quietly enchanting my bow, I returned Tar-Meena's copy of 'Necromancer's Moon'. Superian and I had then headed for home.

I had missed Daenlin. It was now after closing time as we stood behind the sales counter of the Archer's Paradox. I smiled at the Bosmer as I watched the flickering light from the fireplace dance across his balding head. Finally, I interrupted his study of my bow. "Well, what do you think?"

"Buffy, it's the same impressive weapon you found out on that mysterious island in Niben Bay, but obviously now enchanted. What does it do?"

"It will totally but briefly drain my target's speed, shock them and capture their dying energy," I said quietly.

Daenlin whistled softly as both eyebrows pushed wrinkles up his forehead. "By the grace of Hircine! How many arrows can it shoot before you have to recharge it?"

"Thirty two." The words were not fully out of my mouth before I regretted them. I focused intently on Daenlin's face, trying to read his reaction. I began to relax a bit as he simply kept examining the bow. Daenlin was a magnificent marksman, but he knew little of magic. That was a good thing. Any mage would have quickly added things up and surmised the bow had had not been created using the energy of a simple animal.

"Buffy, this is not a hunting bow," Daenlin continued, "at least not for deer. What do you call it?"

"The bow hasn't yet spoken its name to me. I'm sure it will, when the time is right."

"And what do you intend to use it for?" the Bosmer pressed.

"To keep me alive and you from worrying so much," I replied with a smile.

His head tilted to one side and he looked at me quizzically. "What do you mean?"

"Daenlin, I never knew our world was so big and beautiful until I started traveling. I discovered that I love exploring. I also learned how dangerous Cyrodiil is, and how frail I am; my University advisor said that's a dangerous combination. I came to realize it's not just about me. I have friends like you who love and worry about me, and I now travel with a beautiful mare that depends on me to keep us safe."

My smile faded. "That's when I decided I would do or learn whatever it took to create a powerful bow that could help keep me alive and defend those I love." A grim satisfaction swelled within me, crushing any concerns I had about black soul gems.

"I see you've learned much, Buffy. I expect I'd quite like this University advisor of yours; however, I don't think there exists an enchantment or magic that will prevent this old elf from worrying about you. Nevertheless, it seems this bow has plenty of power and even the ability to briefly immobilize your enemies. Are you pleased with it?"

"I'm not quite sure yet," I replied. "The bow knocked a mudcrab far out into the Niben. When I fished his body from the river, he was cooked and ready to be my lunch. A wolf that tried to take him from me fell to one arrow. The next time I encounter a more dangerous foe, I should be able to better evaluate the enchantments. The only problem I'm having so far is keeping it fully powered. The energy from a mudcrab recharges three shots. I'm not used to managing a pile of soul gems."

"I understand. That's why I don't regularly use the Bow of Infliction." The Bosmer carefully leaned my bow in a corner. "Buffy, it's so good to have you home! You've been gone such a long time, what with your schooling and all. And do I understand we're to be neighbors?"

"Yes!" I chirped. "You know I've had my eye on that little place next door for such a long time. Buying Superian took every septim I had, so I had to start saving all over again. Fortunately, selling the practice trinkets I crafted at the University really overflowed my coin purse while I was there. In fact, even after buying furniture from Nilawen for the new house, I still have lots of gold left over. Do you need some?"

Daenlin looked at me, his eyes smiling. "No, young lady." He raised a finger and playfully touched the tip of my nose. "I have everything I need, either in my shop or standing in front of me."

I giggled. "You've been tapping my nose like that for as long as I can remember."

"Since before you can remember, I expect. Well neighbor, join me for dinner and tell me all about your adventures." Daenlin grabbed two empty clay bowls and looked around absently. "Now, where'd I put that ladle?"

"It's about time you fed me." I reached into my pack for the two bottles of Tamika's I had bought from Nilawen. "The smell from your cooking pot has been taunting me for the last hour." I filled a pair of wooden cups with the wonderful wine that Sinderion had introduced me to. Grabbing a loaf of bread and some cheese from Daenlin's cupboard for us to share, I then sat down. He joined me at the table with two bowls of stew.

"Tell me of your adventures," Daenlin prompted.

"The University was amazing. I learned so much. I think I read every book in the Mystic Archives! And my travels. . . have you ever watched the sun set into the Abecean Sea? This stew is yummy. Did you know that snow tastes like water? Or that the Ayleids could light their underground cities with magical blue rocks? There were terrifying bits too, Daenlin. I saw the Oblivion Gate at Kvatch. It was-"

"You were at Kvatch?" The Bosmer's eyes flew open wide and his spoon clattered to the table. "Buffy, you could have been killed!"

"I was not in danger." I shook my head, then lowered my eyes to the red depths of the wooden cup in my lap. "By the time I arrived, access to the city had been cut off by the Oblivion Gate and most of the Daedra were sealed inside what was left of Kvatch. The damage was already done. What remained of the city guard defended a barricade around that flaming gate, intercepting the occasional Daedra that still emerged. They said it wasn't safe, and for me to leave."

"That sounds like wise advice, Buffy. I'm glad you weren't hurt."

I nodded and swallowed hard. I didn't want to ruin the evening, so I took a large drink of my wine, hoping it would help douse the fiery images in my mind.

Finally, Daenlin broke the silence. "Did you ever run into that Altmer in Chorrol I told you about? Goes by the name of Honditar?"

"Yes," I replied, grateful for my host's assistance in moving to a lighter subject, "you were right about him. He walked up to me and said he was a mountain man. Then he told me to poison my arrows to kill deer - it wouldn't hurt the meat. Well, I just couldn't help myself. I told him if he needed poison to kill a deer, he should give up hunting and try farming." The old Bosmer's ploy to cheer me up had worked. Music from our combined laughter filled the Archer's Paradox.

"I told you he was all talk!" Daenlin's laughter finally chuckled its way down to an infectious smile. "Well, it's nice to see the pout gone from that pretty face again. Do tell me more of your travels."

"Have you ever seen how beautiful the White Gold Tower looks from atop the Jeralls? I learned that goblins like beer, pee on trees and have tribal markings on their arms. Superian and I traveled with a dog for a few days before I gave him to the stables at the University. Oh Daenlin, I simply must tell you about King Rislav the Righteous and the Call of Corsair. . . ."

And so it went as we broke bread and shared venison stew until two bottles of wine were gone and the fire was low. Finally, the tales ran dry and a wonderfully comfortable silence between close friends gently joined us. I went to Daenlin's cupboard and, after cutting us a plate of fruit and cheese, rejoined him at the table.

"Daenlin, what's the matter? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I was just recalling the morning you were born." His eyes sparkled brightly with moisture. "Like the good godfather your parents asked me to be, I had spent most of the starry Rain's Hand night pacing the front porch of The Fair Deal with your father. Nilawen was inside helping Terry Ann give birth. It was at the very moment of sunrise that we heard your first cry. When Nilawen came out to tell us about it, Superior boasted that your birth is what had caused the sun to rise." Daenlin stared at the empty wooden cup in his hands. After a moment he raised his eyes to meet mine.

"Where did the years go, Buffy?" A single tear finally escaped and traced a path down the age lines of the Bosmer's rugged cheek. "Why just yesterday, you were eight years old when I took you on as an apprentice. I taught you the bow, and you sparked the long-forgotten joy of life into this old elf's tired spirit. Look at you now. You're all grown up, and a graduate of the Arcane University."

I reached across the small table. I could feel the rough bowstring calluses on Daenlin's fingers as I pressed his open hand against my cheek. "I will always be your little apprentice. Will you take me hunting tomorrow morning, Master?"

Buffy's friendships with the people of Bravil are some of my favorite parts of her stories, this really brings that out so well!

What a beautiful chapter, and the ending... biggrin.gif A hunting trip with Daenlin sounds great, time to show off that new bow and perhaps find it a name? I have a bow called Marshfire, powered by the soul of the late great Arch-Mage Traven.

I absolutely adore Daenlin in the BF! As a matter of fact, I can't look at him in the game (or OHDH) without thinking of Buffy's foster father. Here is a male Bosmer that isn't annoying, and he actually makes Julian smile with his humorous comments!

What a wonderful chapter here. I see you expanded quite a bit on this, based on the new stuff you have introduced so far.
SubRosa
A charming interlude that does much to the show the relationship between Buffy and Daenlin. This was not only simply delightful to read as Buffy turned into quite the chatterbox as she related her travels, but it also does much to create a very solid foundation for the character of Buffy to rest upon. Here we see Buffy's center, her place of equilibrium. Given that I know you will be resting much more upon this relationship in the future of the BF, it is very good to see the foundation firmly laid here.

Like haute, whenever I see him in the game, I immediately think of Daenlin in terms of the BF, as Buffy's mentor and foster-father. It always make me want to go peeking around his shop for a blond bosmer bowgirl...

"That's when I decided I would do or learn whatever it took to create a powerful bow that could help keep me alive and defend those I love."
This immediately brought to mind the Buffy Doctrine™. I am not sure if you were thinking about that when you wrote this, but it certainly becomes one more piece in the puzzle to Buffy's burgeoning philosophy.

Buffy's observation that a mudcrab's magicka only gives her enough power for three shots of her new, yet to be named bow makes me wonder if her fairy-godfather (as opposed to her wood elf godfather) will be putting a mark on her map to a place up in the Jerrall mountains, and subtly remind her to bring glow dust with her...

"I have everything I need, either in my shop or standing in front of me."
This says quite a bit about the Bosmer bowmaster. He has his feet firmly planted in Nirn, knowing exactly what is important and what is not. Methinks this wisdom has only come through hard trials however...

Finally, we have the story of Buffy's birth, which was done with absolute sweetness. The fact that she was born at the moment of sunrise hints at a relationship with Azura? Likewise the title of this new arc of stories. Of course I might be completely off base in my fishing as well! laugh.gif I am also curious if this arc is any way based upon the astrology topic that Renee started in the other forum?

One nit. Not actually a nit, but more of an opportunity that may have slipped you by. When Daenlin is recounting the story of Buffy's birth, you might want to have him mention the month (perhaps even date), as that will also tell us her birthsign. You might even be able to use Buffy's birthday as a future story.

These are the moments that bring Buffy and all the surrounding characters to life. When she is in the company of someone she loves, she is more fully herself than at any other time. Character-driven story, indeed. If anyone ever wants to know what we mean by that, they need look no further than this installment. And the beginning of some Buffy history, too! This will definitely be a treat.

That confirms my feelings about Honditar.

Second time around you really add depth to her relationships! I shamefully admit that I have never visited the Archer's Paradox. (Unlike my current character Galadir, I don't understand why an arrow's flexibility needs to match the bow's power.)
Olen
A wonderful chapter, I particularly enjoyed her inadvertantly revealing what sort of soul she used. Daenlin might not have noticed, but with the comment about a mudcrab only giving three shots he might suspect something...

The how to guide side of this continues. For some reason that had never occurred to me, I always grind alchemy right up at low levels so that more or less sorts money and I'd never thought of the enchant to sell market.

the wonderful wine that Sinderion had introduced me to

This is one area which needs expanding, Tamika and Surilie aren't enough varieties really. And given that for both 399 vintage is desirable that really limits the range of grapes they might use...

The title of this subsequence makes me think that a certain daedra lord may make an appearance to solve some refueling issues...

Chapter 20 marked the first installment of a seven part miniseries. Buffy showed off her newly enchanted bow to Daenlin, then joined the old Bosmer for dinner, wine and telling tales.

mALX- Yes, it seems when Buffy is one-on-one with a friend, the story almost writes itself. *happy sigh* Thank you.

hazmick- Thank you for saying you enjoyed the ending. It was emotional to write, for I quite understand Daenlin's feelings for Buffy.

Rider- You, Julian, Buffy and I seem to see many of the NPCs in a similar way, and that makes me feel really good because I so respect the judgment of you and Julian. I am so honored that as you see Daenlin in your game, it reminds you of how precious he and Buffy are to each other. I'm so glad you enjoyed Buffy's interlude with her old bowmaster.

SubRosa- That Daenlin in your game reminds you of BF is priceless to me. Thank you so much for your kind words. I know I sound like a broken record, but you always seem to capture everything I am trying to convey. I so appreciate your rich feedback. Yes, there is much our little chatterbox tried to convey here.

Thank you for mentioning Buffy's birthday. It was detailed waaayy back in chapter two here:
QUOTE
I wasn't sure what he was getting at, but he was the Emperor, so I dutifully replied, "Rain's Hand, the nineteenth, Third Era in the year 415.

The Emperor smiled and nodded. "Younger than my sons. There will be troubled times ahead that jeopardize all of Tamriel, and the sign of the Mage shall guide your path."
That said however, you are correct that it was so long ago, and it is so easy to refresh here, that I would be remiss not to take advantage of the opportunity. I have, with only a few additional words modified Daenlin's dialogue to include that Buffy was born in Rain's Hand.

Child of Dawn plot. . . must. . . must struggle. . . to resist temptation to. . . spill the imp chips. Even to brilliant SageRosa. . . . happy.gif

treydog- Buffy can often fill me with pride when she is alone with a friend. She almost seems to be a vessel that unknowingly draws out the best in other characters - well, at least those who are kind to her. She will open the next episode in a similar, but hopefully more upbeat venue. For such a magnificent author as yourself to say that BF is a good example of character-driven fiction is music to our ears (round and pointed both). Thanks for the nit so I could repair it.

MyCat- It seems odd that when Buffy visits Daenlin in her game he does not seem to fret over the recent scrape on her cheek or how low she is on arrows. He doesn't even rush over to hug her or pay much attention to the fresh wildflowers she places in the ceramic vase she once gave him. That's ok though. She can listen to him talk about mudcrabs and perfect arrows for hours. She happily fills in the gaps with her vivid imagination as she sets about restocking his pantry with fresh bread, cheese, apples, potatoes and onions.

Olen- Thank you! Buffy survived sticking her little foot in her mouth about the power source of her bow - for now. In about seven more episodes, that slight verbal slip on her part will manifest itself uncomfortably. I'm so pleased you don't mind the 'how to' aspects we try to weave in regarding tactics and survival tips. That is what anchors us fairly closely to the game's mechanics. When it comes to NPCs and quests however, Buffy can take some extraordinary liberties - as you will soon see. Since Buffy met Sinderion, she only knows one way to spell wine: T a m i k a.

21 Child of Dawn Part 2- Can You Teach Me That?

"Buffy, I missed you so much."

I was swept into a sea of green and blue fabric by the fierce hug. My own bow and quiver were being crushed into my back. Arrow tails, and the upper portion of the bow's staff, prevented me from lifting or even turning my head. My face was trapped between two breasts. "Mmphmh. . . ."

"Oops, sorry." Ardaline released me quickly. "I can't even hug you without smothering you. I wish I was petite, like you."

I looked up to see a flush of pink climb above the neckline of my friend's dress to join her natural golden skin tone. "It's my fault, Ardaline," I pouted. "I can barely touch the floor with my feet when sitting in most chairs. I wish I was statuesque, like you. In fact, I wish I had your gracefully curved ears instead of these big pointy horse things." I tugged unhappily on one of my ears.

"Well, I wish I didn't have to look down at every boy in town." The high elf held up her large graceful hands to display them, then grasped a handful of green fabric and slightly raised the hem of her skirt as she looked towards the floor. "And I'd give anything to have little delicate hands and feet like you." Suddenly, our eyes met and we both giggled.

Ardaline said, "I know Kud-Ei would shake her head and say there's a lesson here for both of us." The normally shy elf's face then burst into an impish grin. She opened her eyes very wide and pretended to hold a tea cup in her hand. With her best Argonian imitation of our guild head, she stated, "When are you girls going to learn to be satisfied with what Mara gave you?"

"Oh," I had to stop laughing before I could talk, "I know. She'd probably say we wouldn't be happy unless we both had tails."

Ardaline grinned and beamed down at me with her pretty blue eyes. "I can't believe you're back! And a graduate of the University. Oh, Buffy, we simply must have a party for you once Kud-Ei returns."

It was only now that I noticed how empty the guild seemed. "Where is everyone?"

"Well, my guess is that Henantier is probably doing some sort of secretive experiments at home again. I haven't seen Carandial today. I expect he's poking around in that nearby ruin doing Ayleid research again. The stables would know.

"Oh, that's right. I did notice Carandial's bay missing this morning when I checked on Superian. And where's our wise Argonian leader?"

"Kud-Ei's visiting family in the Black Marsh for a couple weeks."

"By herself?" My eyes widened. "Doesn't she know how dangerous the roads are? The soldiers all say they're just not safe anymore. I can't tell you how many bandits and highwaymen I've encountered when traveling."

"You forget, Buffy. Kud-Ei is a master of illusion. When she wishes it, all of Nirn is blind to her passing. Further," Ardaline playfully stabbed at my chest with a long finger, "she avoids trouble instead of hunting it down like someone I know."

"So it's just us five girls for awhile?" I remarked, looking around.

"Not quite. Delphine just left early this morning for the University. She's getting some kind of an award." Ardaline giggled. "Knowing her, it's probably for some new spell that can make enemies explode. There is certainly nothing subtle about her magic. Aryarie is upstairs, I expect, with her nose in a book. Poor thing's been trying to get through 'Brief History of the Empire'."

"All four volumes?" I asked.

"Yes," Ardaline smiled, "I don't know why they call it 'brief'." Oh, and I think Ita Rienus is in the basement recharging a couple fire staves for Uravasa Othrelas; it seems the priests are still having trouble with ghosts in the undercroft."

"Thanks, Ardaline." I took in a deep breath, then cautiously and briefly hugged my friend again. "I think I'll head downstairs. I have some questions for Ita."

The guild's recharging specialist was indeed in the basement, standing before a table upon which rested two magical staves. "I see nothing's changed, Ita," I said as I approached. "Those priests have been killing ghosts below the chapel every week or so for as long as I can remember."

The burgundy-clad woman turned towards me to reveal pleasant features, marred only slightly by a rather mannish square jaw. Her face was framed by dark hair flecked with gray, an errant strand of which she now swept into place behind one round ear. She smiled warmly. "Hail, Buffy. Welcome back and congratulations, graduate." She nodded her head towards the staves on the table. "Yes, the priests are pretty good with those things."

"I'm afraid I skipped the classes on staves. My advisor, Boderi Farano, focused my skill training on selected spell effects to enhance bow fighting." I chuckled. "Remember that time Delphine asked the priests if they wanted her help to clear the undercroft?"

"Oh yes." Ita had the deep brown eyes of a doe, and they now sparkled. "They were wise to decline her offer. Delphine could certainly solve the problem, but I don't expect the priests would appreciate having Mara's chapel reduced to a pile of arcing, smoldering rubble."

Ita grasped one of the staves with both hands. Closing her eyes, white magicka traveled down her arms, expanding until it enveloped the length of the staff. After a few moments, the glow diminished, to be replaced by a soft red glimmer that briefly emanated from within the weapon. I watched, mesmerized as she repeated the process with the other staff. "There, those are done." Ita then looked my way with a tired smile and pointed above my head at the upper tip of my bow staff. "I'll need a few minutes to recover before I can recharge your weapon."

"Oh, no thanks, Ita. Daenlin and I went hunting this morning and I used the energy from our kill to recharge my bow." I then added hopefully, "I'm going through soul gems pretty fast though. Surely there must be a better way. Can you teach me to do what you just did?"

"I don't think you want that, Buffy." The Imperial shook her head for emphasis. "Recharging weapons is not a skill, it's a profession. Specialized training at the University is required. I was a battlemage before I answered the call to learn what you just observed. It requires one to give up all other forms of spell casting. That's a cost understandably too high for most mages."

"Ita," I began, "I-I had no idea the price you paid for your ability. I'm afraid I must agree that it would not be a path for me. I envy what you can do though."

"One gets used to it," the Imperial sighed. "I can achieve many of the same effects that you can, only through enchanted items and the wonders of alchemy. I simply cannot cast normal spells." Her brow furrowed in thought for a moment. "Hmm, let's see what we can do for you. You already know how to fill and use soul gems. Have you ever seen a Varla stone? They can completely recharge any weapons you carry, but are destroyed in the process."

"I have," I replied as I recalled my trek through Vilverin, "but they are so very rare to find, and exorbitantly priced to buy. Oh, and as you say, you can't reuse them. Are there any other ways? Perhaps you could. . . ."

"You can just stop those little wheels and mechanisms I see whirring behind your eyes, young lady." A wry smile belied her stern words. "I'm much too old to go traipsing through the forests behind a young wood nymph to keep her bow charged. Now, let me think for a moment." Ita lifted a hand and pressed two fingers against her cheek. "In our training, we learned of a powerful artifact. According to legend, the Daedra Lord Azura plucked a star from the predawn sky and enchanted it herself. It could capture and expel the energy of life without being destroyed in the process."

"Like a reusable soul gem?" My eyes popped open wide. "How could I get such an artifact?"

"Yes, I suppose it might work like a permanent soul gem. The risks to obtain such an item would likely be great, but perhaps if one could somehow please or impress Azura. . . Buffy, we're not even sure if the legend is true."

Narrowing my eyes, I pressed, "How would I curry favor with Azura?"

Ita chuckled. "I see you're like a hungry dog with a bone, my young friend. Very well then. Speak with Tar-Meena at the University. If she doesn't know, I'll bet she can dig up something in her texts that will help."

"Thanks Ita. With Kud-Ei gone and it being so quiet here, I think Superian and I will head back up to the University in the morning and pay Tar-Meena a visit."

Boy, do I know the feeling! I guess that's why writing conversations are so much easier for me than writing combat!

Loved this chapter - a great visit to the Bravil chapter and a wonderful way to bring the MG chapterhouse residents to life. Has anyone noticed that the chapterhouse is just like a women's dorm at a private college? None of the men stay inside after curfew! laugh.gif That Kud-Ei is one heck of a resident advisor ('80's term for dorm mother - don't know what they're called these days).

TBH, if they did a full-on version of a few thousand years of Imperial history, the number of volumes would make the Encyclopedia Britannica look feather-light!

And now we have something new for Buffy to pursue! While the Azura quest is a commendable one as Daedric quests go, how will Buffy deal with those vampires? The last two down in the bowels of the mine were hard to put down, with little room for real shooting, even with camouflage!

The BF just keeps getting better, like fine wine, balsamic vinegar, and cheddar cheese (better with age, though don't tell Buffy that!).

Despite the light nature of the overall exchange, I sense that this moment reveals a deeper feeling of doubt within our bow-girl. Her paladin should assure her that plenty of "round-ears" find her quite beautiful just as she is...

And the explanation for why only some mages can recharge items without soul-gems or similar is a clever continuation of the lessons on the physics of magic in the BF.

And how wise of Ita to short-stop any Bosmeri idea of dragging around a "mobile charging station" on her adventures. tongue.gif

"When are you girls going to learn to be satisfied with what Mara gave you?"
Never.

A very sweet interlude with my favorite alchemist, Ardaline (yes, even over Falanu. Ardaline is just so sweet you cannot help but to love her). You used the conversation to good effect to bring us up to speed on the goings on of the guild members. Thanks to that, you make the guild seem like a place filled with real people who actually have lives and *shocked* do things. Unlike in the game where they all just stand around all day talking to each other.

Very interesting take on recharging magic items. You make me feel sorry for Ita though, that she cannot cast normal spells anymore. sad.gif But I can see the reasoning behind that, otherwise every mage would be recharging their own items that way.

My goodness that picture of Ardaline and Buffy! She looks like Queen Kong! No wonder Ardaline is so self-conscious. One thing about the game I never liked was how insanely tall they make Altmer, especially the women. I modded my game to make them the same height as Nord women, because it drove me crazy when I played an Altmer.

It looks like my fishing may have borne a nibble. Azura it is I see... One of the things about the ES universe that always gives me troubles are the Nine and the Deadra Lords. They are presented so generic, and lack the same kind of myths that IRL deities have to bring them alive. For example Inanna's descent into the Underworld; Odin at Mimir's Well, or hanging from the World Tree- himself sacrificed to himself; Christ declaring "This is not my Father's house!", etc...

All they tell us of Azura is that she is the Lady of Dawn and Dusk, and that her realm seems to be a really pretty place. You got me thinking about it again at lunchtime, and what comes to mind is that dawn and dusk are liminal periods, when the world changes from one state to another. So I think Azura might be much like Hekate, who is a goddess of transitions, an edgewalker who steps fluidly from one world to the next. That ability is of course part and parcel to being a magician, so Azura might be a goddess of magic and initiatory rites. Likewise of death and rebirth, visions, and the crossroads (where one must choose which path to tread in life, deciding your own fate).
