Ed-Irma's

Seeing Irma striking Rann, Ed moved to try and pull the boy away from ehr reach.

"Your grandaughter has a point ma'am. Now if you would stop striking at the boy. He's injured, or can't you se that?"

Irma, Her House

"Alright, Rann. You get the benefit of the doubt this time, but don't expect it again. That's twice you've taken her away." She warned.

"Go lie down for a bit." she added after noticing his eye, or lack thereof.

Rann, Irma's House

Only when Irma had walked away did Rann let out a sigh. "Is there a workbench I could use?" he asked Lily. He needed another eye badly, he realized.

Lily, Irma's house

"Yeah, Come on." she said, leading him down the hall.

Ed- Irma's

Ed followed Lily and Rann, then turned and went to Rann's ship. he got a few slivers of rithum and then returned to the rom with teh workbench. He set the fragments down infront of Rann.

"Here you can use these. Rithum is flexible and stronger than msot biotech supplies. Its chemical structure also ensures that the rithum always has a smooth finish and doesn't become abrasive. It's can also be brought to a nice finish so that it refelcts light. With proper preparation it would make a great choroid layer to relfect and control the light hitting the photosensor. You can use the transparent stuff to mak an extremely powerful and sturdy lens."

Rann, Irma's Home

While Ed was gone, Rann busied himself by getting out the tools he thought he'd need and then taking out his good eye.

When Ed came back, Rann put his eye into Ed's hand.

"Can you make a sketch of that?" he would have asked Ed to scan it, but he knew how he used paper. That still made him laugh.

Lily, Irma's Home

"Rithum? the Rykar stuff?" she asked, amazed. SHe picked up a piece and held it up to the light.

Ed- Irma's

Ed felt obliged to help. and in a ways it was exciting to be working on a new project. He had never made a biotech eye. he would leave most of it to Rann, and just care on the lense.

"Sure I'll be glad." he said and turned to go get his bag from teh ship. he gave a quick examination of the supplies on hand.

"These tools will work alright, but I'm gonna bring some equipment fromt eh ship that will do a better job. especially when i come to making the lens."

with that he went to the ship and got his pad and also a surgical laser. Going back to teh room, he proceeded to sketch out and calculate the angles of the rithum reflectors.

Rann, Irma's House

"He's excitable." he said to Lily when Ed left to go to the ship. "He took my eye with him too."

When Ed came back, he asked him what was going on. "So are you copying that eye, or making a totally new one?" He just couldn't account for all those writing sounds.

Ed-Irma's house

He glanced up at Rann.

"Well I am copying this one, but since you are using rithum, which has a differnet density and reflective index I ahve to recalculate the angles so as to optimise the focusing ability of the lens, and to augment the light entering the pupil."

Rann, Irma's Home

"So...Can I take a nap, and you can wake me up when you're done calculating angles and such? This darkness thing makes me tired."

Rann had to respect someone that actually calculated the angles. He usually just did thins by trial and error. Mostly error.

Ed-Irma's

"Yes, go ahead. I'll wake you up. You need the rest," Ed said, "It shouldn't be to much longer, I have several possible angles, but it depends entirely on how the rithum reacts t the polishing. I'll wake you up after i finish a few tests." Ed said with a smirk He then turned to Lily,

"Would you mind helping me polish and test some lenses?"

Rann, Irma's House

"I still smell like compassion too." he muttered tiredly as he walked off in the direction of a bed. That sewage was putrid.

Lily, Irma's House

Lily put down the piece of rithum she was holding. "What do I do?"

Ed-Irma's

"Well.... do you know how to cut glass using high precision tools?"

Lily, Irma's House

Lily nodded. "Yeah..."

Ed-Irma's

"alright, well I need several lenses. about the diameter of the old one. use the clear rithum. cut them at several thicknesses, and have different angles on them so we can determine the correct angle of focus."

Lily, Irma's

She nodded and took the lens out of Rann's eye--how odd!-- and traced it to get the diameter and put it under the clear rithum so she could getthe right size.

She put it under the magnifying glass, and was soon cutting away many different lenses.

"Try these." she said, laying five of them out on the table before trying some more.

Ed-Irma's

While Lily cut lenses. Ed worked on getting the reflector angles. He was surprised at her speed and accuracy.

"Thanks Lily," as she handed her some lenses.

He fit the lenses onto the laser aparatus. then widened the diaphargm to widen the beam. He turned the laser on and watch as the scatered light struck the lense.

"to obtuse of an angle" he said as he saw the beam not quite reconstitute after passing through the lens.

he put in another new one in. "to thick" as the lens went opaque. "Too thin" as the light passed through unaltered. He assumied Lily was noting the testing.

Lily, Irma's

Lily stopped making the one she was making adn tossed it besdie the other bad ones; it was even thinner than the last one.

She made a smaller angle this time, and put the thickness somewhere inbetween the 'too thick' and the 'too thin' lenses.

"Try this one." she said, handing Ed the latest. "It might be a little thick, I'm not sure."

Ed-Irma's

Ed nodded, and placed the lens on the stand. he turned the lasers one. a blurred pinpoint appeared on the tabletop.

"alright well it's getting better. change the angle by about half a degree. you are trully talented. I would have gone through about 2 dozen to get to this stage." he said. as he examined the lens under a magnifying glass.

Lily, Irma's

"So it's just the angle, not the thickness?" she asked, blushing slightly at Ed's compliment.

"Half a degree." she said to herself, beginning another.

Ed-Irma's

"yeah the thickness is fine for now. The lens still needs to be polished before we get exact figures. but i'd rather get a closer figure to start with before we begin polishing.

Lily, Irma's

"Here." she said, holding another lens. "Same thickness, angle altered half a degree."

Ed smiled at Lily as he took the lens from her,

"thanks," he said as he placed it on the stand. he turned the laser on. and watched as the pinpoint came more into focus.

"Perfect. Now we jsut change the wavelength on the laser. change the diameter, program it," he said as he fiddled on the display commands, "and voila!"

as he said the laser dissapeared as it went into beyond visible wavelength. Ed pulled out to goggles and handed one to Lily. the beam became visible through the goggles. the split beams of the laser began spinning on the surface of the lens. the surface becoming shinier and smooth as the laser worked out the imperfectiong in the rithum.

"there polishing the lens"

Lily, Irma's

"So...it's time to wake Rann up?" she asked. "Or can we make the rest without him?"

She wasn't quite sure of what needed to be done, now that the lens seemed to be finished.

Ed-Irma's

"Yeah I guess we can. though First I want you to make me another lens like this one. I'll go wake him as you do that,"

Ed stood up and left the room, he found Rann in the guest bedroom. He shook Rann's shoulder,

"come on bud, we finished the lens."

Rann, Irma's

"Huh?" he asked, tiredly. He brought his hands up to rub his eyes, but thought better of it.

"I can't see a damned thing." he complained, standing up.

Lily, Irma's

While Ed was waking Rann up, she busied herself with making another lens.

"Well I ahve your eye on schematics now, so you can use it."

He helped Rann up and into the other room. he then handed him his eye.
