I have been mulling over how the player character is alive before the Great War, and emerges from the Vault 200 years later in the Boston Wasteland. Well, we know from playing FO3 that Boston is the home of The Institute (MIT I am sure). Those of us who have visited Rivet City's Science Lab know that The Institute had an android go rogue, and even go so far as to do a mind-wipe on himself, so that in the end he didn't even know he was a robot.

So 200+ year old character. The player character being an android would explain that. Either because the character's mind was downloaded into a synthetic body in the vault, or perhaps the character was a synth to begin with. Given what we have seen in FO3, they might well not even know they are an android.

Of course this is probably too cool for Bethesda to do. So I am guessing they go the suspended animation route to explain the character still being alive after 200 years.

They've always dabbled in Cryogenics, that is my guess for how the 200 year time slip happens. I'm still betting that you leave the vault and search for your baby, lol.

This was something McWife was wondering...Why make such a thing about the wife and baby (who they've managed to get to look like a cross between the male and female that you create) if they're then going to ignore them after the first half-hour or however long the initial crawl is?...

I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes, but I think I'm going to wait to play it until the initial kinks are sorted out...

We'll have the guide book, of course... biggrin.gif ...So I'll be pouring over that for a good while before playing...Much like I was with New Vegas...

Also, this being roughly contemporary with the others, I can't use Arnaud, so I'm having to think of someone new!!...Urgh!!...Braaaainnnn!!... biggrin.gif ...

Which'll be roughly when they sort out the next AC game too...Likely... biggrin.gif ...

I try to read as little as possible about FO3 so it'll feel like a completely unknown game once I try it but it's hard not to get spoiled even when skimming through some threads.

From what I understand, it's more or less confirmed that you've been put to a cryo sleep for 200 years, as a part of a Vault-Tec experiment. I don't know what are the proofs but I've read about it on Beth, I think that even Pete Hines said something about it via Twitter.

One thing that really annoys me about the coming Fallout is the voiced protagonist. wacko.gif If there's something I hate, it's to play with a forced voice. When a mod that disables voice actor, gets released, I'll be the first to download it.
SubRosa
The voiced protagonist concerns me too. A voice is nice if you like it. But the game is unbearable if you don't. I use custom voice mods for Oblivion and Skyrim, and they help make my characters come alive. When I can can find the voice to suit the character. But when I tried to play Molly Hatchet in Skyrim I couldn't get the right voice for her, and it made it difficult to play her.

If they have someone like Laura Bailey do the female PC that would probably be fine with me. But it is only a matter of time before that one voice is not going to fit one of my characters. Hopefully there will be alternate voice mods out by that time. Or a disabler like you mentioned (It should not be really difficult. Just record a second of silence, and use it to replace every voice file of the player character).

They also claim that they have a zillion different names recorded, so you will be able to hear your character's name spoken in the game. But I bet not a single one of the names I will use will be on that list.
hazmick
I agree with the point about voiced characters. My accent only seems to be used for peasants and other unimportant NPCs in most games, if it's heard at all.

Seems the male character in FO4 is going to have that stock 'American Hero' voice that the protagonist of every action game ever uses. Hopefully the female character voice will be good.

The name thing is quite fun though. The original Stronghold game had that feature back in 2001. Very nice touch.

I'm the same way on voices. The wrong voice can get on my nerves, too. But HOPEFULLY it will be easy enough to change out voice files to one you do like.

(I say "Hopefully" so carefully because of the stuff pulled on modding voices in Skyrim). If they do that to us again, I have the converter for Skyrim voice files and a bunch of spare female voice files warming up in the pan, lol.

But they might do it like they did ESO - where each race has its own set of 8 different female and male voices; and you get to listen to all their phrases and sounds in the gen when you are creating the character - choose which one you want.

I hope they do, because there are some of those voices they had sets of that I really wouldn't want to be stuck with on my character; in fact - in each set I only found 1-2 of the 8 voices that I could stand hearing over a whole game. So the odds are against them finding something I'll like too.

(but since FO4 will be modable, I'll be able to fix it if they don't choose well, lol).

There is one female guard in ESO that I would love to have voice files on, and never get sick of hearing it. Unfortunately, no way to find out whose voice that was to hunt down voice files for her, verysad.gif

mirocu
I think voiced PCs only work when they have actual conversations with NPCs such as in the original Deus Ex.

From what I remember of all the interviews at E3...There is one voice for the male and one for the female...Sadly I can't find the interview we watched on Youtube with all the cast on stage...But it's one voice for all males and one for laydeez...

I'm ambivalent (Is that the right word?...I think it is, as in, I don't really care at all) about the voice thing...I would like to imagine their own voice - or actor from whatever show I deem him to be - but at the same time, if you're given specific things to say, it may as well be said with an animation...*Shrug*...Each to their own and all that though...

The major points here seem to be that combat has improved, so you don't have to rely on V.A.T.S as much, and big battles feel bigger.

Perks also seem to be an even bigger part of the game, and I've heard (but can't confirm) that there'll be no skills in the game. Not sure I like the sound of that.
SubRosa
The skills are there. Look at 33 seconds in. They are exactly the same as in FO3, including tagging three of them. The guy talking about it calls them perks by mistake.

Look at 5:14. A Mirelurk Queen?!? Ewwww!
mirocu
Tbh I never understood what tagging a skill meant.. tongue.gif
SubRosa
Tagging adds +15 points to it. It is just a way of picking 3 skills that you start the game better at.

Ah, the voice thing. The thing that concerns me is what this means for the future of the Elder Scrolls. Bethesda has shown a tendency to incorporate the successful (read popular) ideas in the Fallout games into their 'main' series and vice versa. I don't think it's an accident that the deathclaws look like Godzilla… dragons were very popular in Skyrim after all.

The idea of bringing in twenty different voice actors for the different races and genders in Tamriel seems cost prohibitive, but I have no doubt that the voiced Fallout 4 protagonist is going to be a huge hit… no matter what the voice sounds like. So it looks like we're all going to have to brace ourselves for the 'American Hero' voice that drives hazmick crazy laugh.gif
SubRosa
They'll probably hire the guy who voiced the male Shephard in the Mass Effect games...

I think we already had our example of the mail and female voices in the face gen screen part of E3's announcement. Todd indicates you have to create both the male and female; and the baby is created off those looks. The last one on screen when you exit the Char Gen is the character you will be playing (male or female) - So I think these are the voices you will have to get used to:

( at 2:34 )

(I think the echo chamber effect is being done by the E3 mikes; I certainly hope they don't have that on throughout the game - that would be really irritating).

mALX

Oh, well here is a good example of the male voice at 2:29

The female voice sounded a bit like Momma James in Fallout 3 then, right?

Oh, here is the male voice being interviewed by Podcast:

Brian T Delaney:

who did voices for:

Halo 5: Guardians, Batman: Arkham Knight, Mighty No. 9, The Secret Life of Pets, Minions, Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem.

The female voice is supposed to be Courtney Taylor:

Who did voices for:

Jack from Mass Effect and Ada Wong from the recent Resident Evils; and in Fallout: New Vegas she did the voices for Gloria Van Graff, Janet, Jas Wilkins, Morgan Blake and some additional characters.

And speaking of which, QuakeCon said you will have the ability to romance your companions in Fallout 4.

To fans who’ve asked: Fallout 4 doesn’t end when the main story is and over and there is no level cap. You can keep playing and leveling.

She has a range with her voice that can go from sultry to soft to hard depending on her role; but if you listen to the interview with Brian T Delaney - he says some things about her voice in that interview that is very interesting.

I was hoping for that girl guard that just says "Hail" ESO. I would love to have a character with that voice!

Also, they've been releasing fun little animated videos about each S.P.E.C.I.A.L every week. Only about 2 minutes long and very Fallout-ish. The first three:

I couldn't use these links, but the vids are on the first page you linked to. Er, did anyone else notice how many references to cannibalism they had in the Endurance vid? What was that all about?

DE - what were you saying about cannibalism back when they first announced Fallout 4? I remember you mentioning it - well watch the Endurance vid, it may catch your attention like it caught mine. I think you might have been onto something months ago that I'm just now seeing, lol.

Here is the Perk chart, and it is showing cannibalism as a Perk, so that is probably that same Perk they had as a bad karma option in Fallout 3:

No hardcore mode! Why? That is one of the things that has gone over huge with Bethesda's fans; why toss it? And I agree with Mirocu on the non-degradation of armor and weapons, that is boooooorrrrriiiiiiing.

Grrrrrrr.

I have taken one step forward in my quest not to be a Bethesda sheep (just mindlessly buying their games like I'm hypnotized) = by (and since) cancelling my prepaid order.

Cancelling the order was a biggie for me, I have pre-paid/pre-ordered every RPG game Bethesda has made since (and including) Oblivion. But truthfully, when I cancelled the pre-order; I actually still originally planned to go to the shop on release day or order it from Steam two days earlier than release date.

Well, I don't plan to anymore; but instead have decided to wait to see what I hear about the game after it is released. If it lacks decent questlines/is a modding nightmare/or is another Todd Howard fiasco of power-mad control over my roleplay - I might just save myself the Septims bottlecaps gold money this time.

Yeah, I still enjoy Fallout 3 like I did when I first got it; and will always love Oblivion. (And actually, I always include New Vegas among my Bethesda games even though technically it was an Obsidian work).

QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 3 2015, 01:42 PM) *

My son and I were wondering if they are going to have us Player's experience the initial drop of bombs and having to get into the vault (111). Like maybe we start off in that house and have to run up that hill to the vault with the crowds - maybe as that baby in the crib or something. Then maybe have a time lapse like they did when we were babies in Fallout 3; then we have to emerge (or something).

And it looked a lot like Boston to me, the water was to the east of the land; old time-y ships in the harbor, etc. And the architecture of the houses most def looked Bostonian.

Check = Right.

QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 4 2015, 10:18 AM) *

I don't know, nothing has been said yet - but I'd almost bet that it will be through Steam, because they are hand in pocket with them on everything now. Steam has a long term contract with them that is extremely beneficial to Bethesda.

Check = Right.

QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 15 2015, 09:12 AM) *

They have voiced over a thousand names and have a child whose appearance is based on your character and your spouses character.

So then they say you are the only one who survives the vault? I don't think so, why go to all that trouble for a baby who looks like your character and has its name voiced and then kill it off in the beginning of the game?

Bethesda does not kill off children. I think there has to be some reason they spent so many resources on a baby and were so careful to mention that it is created to look like you and your spouse - there was no "IF you want a baby," it was a given you would have one. So it has to be a part of the storyline.

I think the storyline will involve you leaving your Cryochamber to find your child. (like maybe you wake up after 200 years and discover all the other remains in the vault, but no remains for your child and evidence the Enclave has taken the baby)

Check = Right again.

Well, after a few thousand hours we should, right? laugh.gif
Kiln
Well I have to say, the depth and variety of Fallout 4 has made up for it's shortcomings.

I was skeptical at first and still a bit disappointed about some design choices but building your own community, modding the absolute crap out of the weapons/armor, modular power armor, and overall polish of the game have outweighed the changes.

So far, I've dumped 20+ hours into it and I'm just getting started. The skill system has been completely replaced by a revamped SPECIAL system that is simplified at first glance but really has quite a bit of depth once you realize that each stat opens up a plethora of options beneath it with several ranks per perk. In short, it is different but it still very much feels like Fallout and plays very well with a huge world to explore and difficult choices ahead.
