Played some tonight.

Started out with the all-time classic Super Mario Brothers, I got up to level 5-1 before I messed up too much to be bothered to continue. So in went Probotector, otherwise known as Contra, and with the help of the 30 lives code I beat it. I guess I could beat it without the code if I actually tried hard enough, but meh. I just wanna see the game and beat it. It btw really does have solid gameplay smile.gif

More from the Gaming Historian, this time about the Game Boy smile.gif

I had about six games in total when I was a kid and I´ve beaten them all. I spent so much time playing that I got really good at them, more so than I ever got on the NES actually. Still have all the games but unfortunately I can´t find the boxes and manuals sad.gif

I'm not ignoring this, will check it out when I have some time to watch it. Today was Thanksgiving, and tomorrow I've got an appointment for most of the morning; and really not sure what I'll have time for after that, depends on how things go.

Any less known game suggestions from anyone for the NES?

Super Mario and Duck Hunt? tongue.gif

I don´t know many less known gems so I don´t think I can help you much. Though I know Renee would recommend Faxanadu, an early RPG kind of game where I think you level up and such things. Personally I can recommend River City Ransom otherwise known as Street Gangs, if you want to kick and punch thugs while being one yourself tongue.gif It actually has an element of RPG too where depending on what food you eat you can level up different skills. You can also learn new moves from books.

Look em up on youtube if you want to see how they are smile.gif

I have a free weekend (finally) - so finally had time to sit down and watch this. I love his histories of the different games! He didn't go as in depth in this one as he did on the NES, but maybe there wasn't as much to say, lol.

I got my son two gameboys (so his friends could play with him if they didn't have one) and every single attachment and extra available for them. He had a Gameboy pack (like a briefcase) that held all the gear in it for when he visited friend's houses, lol.

He got the Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance; the Gameboy GameCube Adapter so he could play his gameboy games on the Television; etc.

I think for the longest time that was his favorite of all time; but when I got him the XBox 360 it eventually got where he didn't want to play it anymore, so he sold everything to the GameStop in order to buy 360 games.

mirocu
So nice of you to get him all that! Sad to learn he sold it all eventually, though. If he hasn´t regretted it yet I suspect there might come a time when he will... kvleft.gif

Never had any accessories for the Gameboy myself. I had the box it came in plus the games and that was it, but I was happy. Still remember when I got Kirby´s Pinball Land on a Christmas morning (we always got one gift early), I played the heck out of it! happy.gif

I was afraid he would regret it too; but he sold them all in 2006 or so; and this is almost 2016 - so far he hasn't moaned about it, lol. I guess if he ever does, you can always still find them for sale at the GameStop, though maybe not in the same great condition his were in when he sold them.

I regretted selling my NES and Sega Genesis systems, and moaned about it a LOT. One of my son's friends gave me his old broken NES system and Mario games for XMas right before Oblivion came out. You had to fix the NES before playing every time you played it, but then it would work. I played it to death until my son got me playing Oblivion, lol.

I still miss the Sega every now and then, but I did get some of the games on my PC to play (Echo the Dolphin; Kid Chameleon; etc). It just isn't the same, somehow.

Sounds strange. What did you have to do in order to make it work before every session?

Tonight I played some Pro Wrestling (as Star Man) and then Wild Gunman that utilizes the Zapper smile.gif

When I got beyond lvl 99 on Gunman it just started over at lvl 1 again, and the score isn´t properly displayed as it can´t show 1.000.000 and over. But I did get over 2 million points. Average time on bandit one was 0.25 seconds and on bandit two 0.37 seconds. Lost two lives though because I was goofing around with different shooting styles tongue.gif

I love my NES happy.gif

mirocu
Last night I finally beat Kung Fu! biggrin.gif

Not a hard game really and it´s very short, but you take a lot of damage when hit, especially when fighting the bosses but I beat the end guy surprisingly easy. No deaths along the way either so it was a pretty nice run smile.gif

I also played the black box wrestling game where I won and defended the title. No real end to it, you just keep defending the title. And I also beat Probotector (Contra) again. Love the music on stage 5 and 6 smile.gif
Kiln
One of my favorite NES games was Heavy Barrel. My brother and I played it for a looong time together. Decent early shooting game IMO.

Snake Rattle 'n' Roll was another good multiplayer NES game I love.

I wish more companies would rerelease their old games on the newer consoles like the Rare Replay collection. It'd be nice to play Morrowind with a graphic update and optimized for the Xbox One.
mirocu
Just played through DuckTales 2. Never had this game to the NES as a kid but I did play it extensively on the Gameboy. So much so I got the two possible endings several times each.
On the NES I´ve beaten it twice now but I haven´t found all the pieces of the map. Last time I found all but one and this time I found three pieces.

A nice game with good gameplay, great replay value and awesome music. Even the very last music at the endscreen is kickass! smile.gif

Today I got the correct version of Dr Mario in the box. It didn´t come with the manual and sleeve but I already got that so I put it all together and finally I have a complete Dr Mario again! biggrin.gif

Had it as a child but since I was a bit stupid in the face I got rid of it. As I did with more games. Bah.

I also have the Murican version and as I have the 10NES chip disabled it works on my machine but at a much slower rate (audio-wise). So much fun to play it again with the music at the correct pace smile.gif
mirocu
Just got Bugs Bunny´s Crazy Castle for the NES. Already have it for Gameboy but thanks to The Nerd I had to get it for the NES too biggrin.gif

Reckon I should clean and test it soon, at least so I can give the proper feedback to the guy who sold it.

Well, the game worked perfectly. Not that it is a very good game, but it still worked laugh.gif

Not having another one coming in atm. Mebbe some time in the future, still haven´t gotten Metroid smile.gif
Dark Reaper
Ah the old nes my favorite games on it where:
1: The Legend of Zelda
2: Mario Bros. 2 and 3.
3: Willow.
4: The Goonies 2.

I'd put Zelda 2 on here although I like the game, it's the one Zelda game I haven't beaten even to today.
mirocu
Nice list, Reaper. Out of those I've never tired Willow, how good is it?
Dark Reaper
Willow's an odd game that loosely follows the movie. It plays like Legend of Zelda and in this game Willow is more of a swordsman then a sorcerer in training. It does have a note from the film but plays at the very last few seconds of the end credits.
Conshaq does a nice playthrough of the game.
mirocu
Long time no buy! smile.gif

Kinda want to dive back into buying NES games again, mainly Metroid and Rescue this time. I'm in no hurry though but these are the one I'm looking into. I've played Metroid but not Rescue (I think...?) and it would be neat to add them to The Collection ™ smile.gif
Dark Reaper
Watching a video walkthrough of the nes Konami game Mission: Impossible. Amazing how they got the stealth in this game just about right while it was severely lacking in the nes version of Metal/Digi' Gear.
mirocu
Never got far in M:I. Everyone would just gang up on me tongue.gif

Just wanted to throw this out there since what I discovered got me a tad excited... biggrin.gif

Back in 2013 I bought a copy of the rare NES game Mr Gimmick. The game was only released in Japan and Scandinavia and also very late in the 8-bit era and for these reasons not many copies are out there. Well, at least not compared to say Mega Man or other games.
Anyway, I bought Mr Gimmick for 2500 SEK and when I just now looked at the auction site there were a few more up for sale, for 5000 SEK each!!! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

That's not to say they are easy to sell or even that they will be sold for that price, but to see my purchase double in value like that really got me hot and bothered bigsmile.gif

Edit: I just looked at another game, Action 52. Same story there! Bought it for 2500 SEK and the two ones up for sale now; 4500 and 3900 SEK, respectively!

Sunsoft is famous for putting good quality music in NES games and in Mr Gimmick it's due to an extra sound chip. You should hear the music from another Sunsoft game called Ufouria smile.gif

NEW NES GAME PURCHASE

Of course, "new" is to be taken with a grain of salt. It's new to my collection anyway and the game in question is Metroid. Never played it much back in the day and I don't reckon I will now. It's not really appealing to me but it's still an iconic game and hey ho, maybe it will grow on me a bit*?

Came complete with the small box and the manual that refers to Samus as "he" but as the perceptive child I was back then I instantly suspected it was a girl in that suit because of how the character was running; reminded me of an eleven-year-old girl bigsmile.gif

This morning I decided to boot up my old NES again and play some Mega Man and Battle of Olympus, two games I played as a kid but never owned. I just played two stages of Mega Man and a bit of the other one.

Although I never got far in either games I do enjoy the music in them and especially Battle of Olympus. I'll list a few here and frankly, they are so much more memorable than basically any modern, overproduced song by whoever world famous singer or group. These simple 8-bit tunes kick them around the playground fifteen times I tells ya.

Title theme
Arcadia Green Fields
Caves of Argolis
Peloponnesus Forest

Today I got a new (heh) game for my NES; Top Gun. I made a mistake when buying it though; I thought I was buying Top Gun II: The second mission, the sequel to the game I got. My bad. I'll get the other one later.

Worked fine but I crashed in the ocean when trying to land on the aircraft carrier tongue.gif

I like Top Gun on the NES. Just pay attention to ALT and Speed indicators on the hud during the landing sequence and you should almost always be able to land on the carrier.

My Dad used to have "Flight Simulator," and I couldn't land on the Aircraft Carriers for anything! A lot of Tail-Hookers died that day, lol.

I just bought a mug that has the original Game Boy design and with a screen that "turns on" to a game when hot beverage is poured in! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm also on the fence if I should continue bidding on a complete Link's Awakening. Good quality and I only have the loose game at present. But over 100 bucks... Do I really want it that bad?
mirocu
Decided to try my NES this morning. Problem though my remote to the TV didn't work, something I have noticed before. I need to press a button to change channel to AV1 in order to play, but there was no response.

Seeing no alternative, I opened up the remote to take a look at the circuit board. I thought it could be the same issue NES cartridges suffer from; dirty connections. So I took a qtip and some cleaning fluid and went to town. Qtip basically turned black. Went through five of them before the circuit board looked good and the blackness on the qtips had faded enough. Put it all together and BAM; now it worked perfectly fine! biggrin.gif

Played some Mega Man (first game) and as it all now works fine I'm gonna play some Battle of Olympus and Pinball as well. I choose these games because how they remind me of springtime from my childhood happy.gif

Link’s Awakening was the hero of many a long car trip when Khajiit was but a cub. This one couldn’t justify $100 for it, no matter the warm feelings this one harbors for the game though.

Samesis. I didn't continue bidding and I think it ended up at over 200 bucks. I do have the loose game from decades before so I can still play if I want.

Only ever played my Game Boy at home though, although occasionally on trips. Since ambient lighting is most important I wanted to sit in a specific location to get the best view of the screen.

Fun fact: I completed all my Game Boy games way back when. Something I never did with my NES games even though I got that much earlier. I just liked the Game Boy better in a way.

Funny thing about Link’s Awakening. They recently released a remake on the Switch. It was very well done! This one knows how you feel about that so now Khajiit is not sure why he even mentioned it! laugh.gif

Played some Mega Man on the NES this morning and for the first time I actually beat the Fire Man stage! At least I don't think I've ever done that before. I usually just beat Cut Man and Bomb Man.

Also played some Kid Icarus but as I'm even worse on that game I didn't get far. Back in the day I had a code to skip to the last stage which I used a lot, so I have beaten the game but not legit by any means tongue.gif

Yes, I always have an urge to play some NES in springtime. As this was merely a test I only played some Mega Man; Cut Man and Fire Man stages to be exact. Prior to playing I quick-cleaned the 72-pin connector using the special "cartridge" and I also did the actual Mega Man cartridge. And thanks to that; worked perfectly on the first try!
mirocu
Played a bit of Shadowgate yesterday as well as Mario Bros and Dr Mario. Sad thing; my system cleaner which is like a cartridge broke and now I have to get another one. It's essential in order to make it work, cleaning the games isn't enough.

Shadowgate is fun though, one of the very best games on the NES if you ask me. And would you believe it; all three save slots still work! I have two right at the very end and one from roughly 60-65% through the game. Loaded up that one and played it to the end. Fantastic soundtrack.
