Oh yeah, you should definitely read that. Anyway, the moral of the story has to be adapted a bit.
It should be:,, Don't mess with the Spartans within melee range. Especially when you only approach from one side." The Greece army was notoriously underequipped for long range combat.

And another Spartan quote, this time of a presumably unknown soldier. Or two actually. I don't know the literal version though.
Soldier 1 (perhaps a Thespian? He doesn't sound very Spartan):,, When the Persians fire their bows, the arrows will block out the light from the sun."
Soldier 2 (Spartan):,, That's good. Then we'll have our battle in the shade."
Lord Revan

Yeah they use that quote in the movie, but in the movie it's "....thousand nations of the Persian Empire descend upon you.... Our arrows will block out the sun!"

Spartan- "then we shall fight in the shade."

A slight word difference, the first guy is persian.
DoomedOne
Yeah 300 looks interesting because of the personality they're bringing to the Spartans. A lot of movies about history leave most of the characters kind of flat, especially when they don't know much about them. I remember hearing about that battle a while ago, it sounded so cool I wondered why no one made a movie about it, but I learned there were a crapload of books about it and even a GN.
Mazelure
300 does look amazing... I kinda started drooling when I saw the trailer... I mean the graphics, actors and script looks amazing.
Wolfie
Ah, 300... i can't wait to see that movie, it looks fantastic.
Saw the trailer a while back, and was left with a feeling of "Must.....see....movie!"
Lord Revan

Yeah, go Spartans! laugh.gif Looks like this movie has a lot of support, good thing I brought it up! biggrin.gif

In a unrelated topic my Morrowind disc broke! All of a sudden I had a craving to play it and when I opened the box the disc was BROKEN!!! Some one must have been screwing with my stuff.
The Metal Mallet
Well at least Morrowind is still pretty easy to find. Not to mention it would be fairly cheap now. Still, it is frustrating to rebuy a game because of something like that. I had to rebuy Diablo 2 because it went missing, but it kinda turned out for the better because I decided to buy the Battlechest version with the expansion and booklet and whatnot.
Black Hand
I have 3 Backup Morrowind Discs, from when my old when crapped out, and I had to rebuy the XBox version....the guy said they had three, I said I'd take them all. And I did! Wont be running out of those for a little while!
canis216
My game disc once broke too--years ago. So I upgraded to GOTY edition! That was a fair spot of luck, really.
jack cloudy
I know the pain. My Starfleet academy disk broke. (Bad story, but fun gameplay. I mean, if you already have to save the Federation before you've even got your diploma, then how the heck did the Federation survive longer than the first week?)
Well, actually, only one of the five disks broke. Lucky me, it was disk one which is the vital one.

I don't really miss it though. I bought Morrowind two weeks later. Now I'm saving up for a nice laptop and the GOTY edition.
ShogunSniper
any gears of war fans out around here?

my friend just rented it and i've been playing for about 5 hours. my personal opinion: although the controls are hard to get used to, you ultimately end up with a game that has intuitive and fluent gameplay... and its really really damn pretty too. my two cents, whether you care or not. biggrin.gif
The Metal Mallet
If I had an X-Box 360, Gears of War would certainly be a top choice of game purchases. Unfortunately I do not own an X-Box 360, nor did I get one for my birthday. Though I am still happy with my gift, a 19 inch flatscreen TV with a built in DVD player for my room, which I'll also take with me when I leave my home to attend college in the fall.

I could purchase an X-Box 360 if I wanted to, but I think I should save up for my college tuition instead. Smart choice eh?
canis216
Yes, you'll need that money for college. Tuition, fees, books--they try to bleed you out of everything you've got.

In my current work as a TA I've got a tuition waiver and I'm paid nearly $900 a month on top of it (more than a $20,000 value in total, at least), but I'm still getting killed by the fees. (Plus rent, plus insurance... damn!)
ShogunSniper
anyone drive a clutch? anyone a mechanic? my car... recently it started doing something odd...

i can put it in first, very slowly let out the clutch and it will simply drive itself.... with my limited knowledge of cars i suppose it were possible if the car idled high.. or if the clutch was messed up, but it only started doing it like half an hour ago... any ideas? (other than go to a mechanic)
Rane
Have you considered calling an exorcist?
ShogunSniper
indeed i have not put it past my small honda civic to be possessed. i decided to ignore it, however, until it becomes a bigger problem, then pay tons of money then. biggrin.gif

any other way would require i tell me mum about it. and her logic would be: "it was fine when i drove. now you start driving and its broken. its your fault."
Zelda_Zealot
^ Gotta love logic like that huh Shogun?

I don't have the attention span to drive a stickshift, if I tried I would probably end up putting it in fifth gear instead of third! laugh.gif Doesn't really matter though, I don't have my license yet, and need to get my permit renewed (Yeah, I am lazy)
ShogunSniper
heh... i dont have a license either...
Zelda_Zealot
Then how did you... Nevermind... Somethings are better off unknown...
The Metal Mallet
Woo! Snow day today!!! I actually got to sleep in! The only unfortunate thing is that I agreed to go to work earlier today, so I didn't have any free time to do what I wanted since I decided to simply sleep in, then go straight to work. Ohwell, beats doing schoolwork, especially when the bad weather keeps people from using the drive thru.
minque
Now here´s just rainy and dull....i´ve finished this week´s work and I hopefully I will be able to do something I want for a change....Like tonight I´m going to a concert, country-music, to celebrate Johnny Cash...now 75 years old!

Oh yeah!
Zelda_Zealot
Seems like everyone is getting bad weather these days, just last night there was a big storm sweeping through my part of SC. In fact, the wind was so crazy at about 1 AM last night, I thought the branches on the tree outside my window would be ripped right off the trunk!
canis216
Sunny in Missoula today!

Beat it with a stick.. thats what I'd do.

Hey peeps smile.gif

Btw, everyone is complaining about the weather buts its sunny and warm down here in good ol NC tongue.gif
Zelda_Zealot
Yeah, it was here earlier as well.

I really wish I had my Xbox today so I could play Oblivion, it would have made the day perfect. But no, UPS has foiled me again... dry.gif
The Metal Mallet
Well in case you didn't know, last night was UFC 68, which featured an interesting Main Event. The Main Event was a heavyweight title fight between the current champ, 6'8, 265 pound Tim Sylvia against Randy Couture, who was coming back after retiring for a year.

Well the outcome of that fight was crazy, Couture is nearly a foot shorter than Tim, and probably is about 40 pounds lighter, and yet he dominated him. Even the first punch his threw in the fight knocked Tim down, it was amazing! I've never seen a 43 year old fight against a 30 year old so effectively.

So yea, if you didn't see it, you completely missed out.
The Metal Mallet
Looks like we're having problems with porno posters again...
ShogunSniper
im not so sure its actually porno. it seems like an elaborate scam to get some buffoon into thinking he is missing codecs to view the video, hence why he can hear siad porno and not see it, and trick him into downloading said 'codec' to fix the problem, though it seems more likely the codec were some sort of a virus. or more likely spyware.

captain obvious to the rescue.
Pisces
Well I wouldn't know that since I didn't click on any of the links tongue.gif
canis216
Yeah, as soon as I saw that thread I just went ahead and reported it. Nothing worth messing around with.

Yes, thanks for reporting them. Just got rid of another three. As if we need links to Britney showing us...well anything. Ever again. If anymore pop up (so to speak wink.gif ) please continue to report them, and we'll get rid of them asap.

Cheers guys! smile.gif

On a more forum friendly note, has anyone here seen The Number 23?

If so, what did you think of it? I really liked it but some people gave it bad reviews. mad.gif
Lord Revan

No, ahven't seen it..... but then I'm not planning to either. To add to a potential movie discussion, has anyone seen Ghost Rider?
The Metal Mallet
Nope, I haven't seen any of those movies. I have a hard time going out and seeing movies during the school year. But fortunately, 300 will be coming out during my school break.

I also plan on watching The Prestige tonight. It seems like an interesting concept and I can't wait to see how it is.
Lord Revan

Yeah, my family and friends are planning on seeing 300 at the end of my spring break. My cousin will be here, two friends, and my mom (oddly enough) want to watch it. But Out of the mentioned my mother probably can't see it if all the other adults choose to go somewhere else.........

Mom doesn't get pysched up about violent things often (my old N64 games made her a nervous wreck..... metaphorically anyway).
ShogunSniper
300 looks awesome. i might go see bridge to terabithia tomarrow night down at the local theatre if a certain someone would do me the honor. the movie is not my first choice, but our little movie theatre only has two screens so there usually isnt much to choose from.

and on a movie related note. i just watched the entire lord of the rings trilogy over again this weekend. with the extended editions it equals about 10 hours of cinema... but it was quite worth it. biggrin.gif
The Metal Mallet
Haha Shogun, I have yet to do a gauntlet of LotR in like one day/over a weekend. I do have all the extended versions, but I just can't sit around for that long.

But, I just finished watching The Prestige and I really, really liked it. The catch at the end was pretty cool, but I won't spoil it for anyone wink.gif
Lord Revan
Then I will spoil the ending for you! *Spoilers, censored by the order of......... something*-

(----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
Anyway, I saw The Prestige shortly after it came out, personally I perfered the Illusionist. But, oh well.
Zelda_Zealot
They both looked good to me so thus both are on Netflix, to bad they won't be here for another 15-20 movies (Which would take about three and a half months to go through in my house). sad.gif

I have a question Lord Revan, in The Illusionist, is it real magic like The Prestige or is it the kind that is actually possible? You can just PM me if it is a spoiler, I don't mind too much.
Lord Revan
More Porno posts, fanart section poster is Anb*******. nono.gif These guys are getting on my nerves now.......
ShogunSniper
i bet its just a single person, but yeah. it does tarnish our forums. i think that we need a couple more mods. maybe some who are capable of being on around this time. dont usually see a lot of moderators near this hour it seems.
canis216
It is really agitating, this violation of the sanctity of our fair forum. Damn.
Zelda_Zealot
I don't even see why they do it, it would be so much easier to just go a forum devoted just to that and make the topics there. Instead they decide to just attempt to rot away to soul of our beloved forum. nono.gif

Greetings all. I've been unbearably busy in RL lately, but I thought I'd stop in and say hi.

HI.

Okay, I guess I can go now.

But really, I wanted to share something exciting with my online family: if all goes according to plan, I will defending my Ph.D. thesis on Monday. That means that on Monday night (if all goes well), you can call me:

Dr. Planty

I hope that all goes well. I'm a bit nervous right now, as there are a couple professors that I know are going to give me a hard time. And somehow I don't think that challenging them to a duel in the IC arena will help me out. I'll just have to hope that I have enough intelligence and willpower to best them in the intellectual arena.
Zelda_Zealot
Ha! I loved those Oblivion references! biggrin.gif

Anyway, good luck... Dr. Planty

Hi friend! I´m very happy to see you around again..I´ve missed you, you know!

How exciting to defend your PhD! I guess there will be one big celebration monday evening then? When I went to university, I always tried to visit as many of those things as I could! First; it was interesting! Second; You actually could learn something new, Third; There was always some nice champagne and snacks right afterwards ...and last but not least; Usually I managed to get invited to the big party in the evening..

Why? do you ask, well I was probably considered an asset to a party..... blink.gif

Rest assure I´ll be thinking of you on monday! And I´ll keep my fingers crossed, but I´m convinced you´ll do just great!

Go for it Dr Planty! goodjob.gif goodjob.gif goodjob.gif
The Metal Mallet
Yes, I'm sure all of us here with you the best (Dr.) Planty. Good luck in your defense!

Hopefully after monday that'll mean you'll have more time to stop by and chat/comment!
mplantinga
Thanks for all the words of support and encouragement. For now, I can use all I can get. At least its only a few more days and then it will be all over.

I should have more time soon, but not immediately. I'll be moving next Thursday to go stay with some friends for a bit while I look for a job. They do have dial-up internet, but being their house and all, I'm not yet sure how easy it will be for me to get online. But I'll definitely try to be here more once I've settled in over there.

@Minque: You, an asset to a party? My imagination can come up with many reasons, but somehow I doubt that the majority of them are actually true. Perhaps we should just hope that you were a great conversationalist. Of course, I'll bet that being a woman probably helped, male scientists being the clueless, socially inept people many of us are (hopefully not me, but I'll leave that judgment up to you).
treydog
Let me add my support to you, Dr. Planty. I know you will do well- my thoughts will be with you.
