A Buffy sighting! How fun!! smile.gif Vincent, that sly dog! I love Teresa’s reaction, use his face as a target instead of losing her cool.

Nothing else existed, and her final arrow sang along the thread binding all three together.
So beautiful, I had to point it out again.

It makes perfect sense that Teresa’s third flight didn’t go as well, it’s not the first time she’s thought herself into doubt. Then her reaction took her straight back to the IC street urchin in her mind. How lovely that Tadrose could show her a glimpse of how the rest of them really see her, an accomplished archer who just (probably) qualified for the finals! I love the image you left us with, the stringy wood elf disappearing under a torrent of her celebrating friends. smile.gif

Ha ha! She went to see Vols. She is out of her element in the barracks that's plainly evident.

13.2

For some reason I thought it was funny that Vols called her Red.

QUOTE
Argh, are you trying to smother me woman!

LOL! Probably one of the better ways to go... smothered by breasts laugh.gif

It's kind of cute how they are both learning so much from each other as they finally start talking.

13.3

It's so nice that Teresa and Simplicia finally got to have this talk.

Catching up on all I've missed.

Suggestion, Rosa: if you really want to read not only about boxing in depth, but also want a lesson in beautiful and lyrical prose style, buy and read "Ghosts of Manila" by the former S.I. writer (now deceased) Mark Kram. For sheer power and beauty of writing about boxing no other book I have read in 50 years comes even close.

haute ecole rider: Julian of Anvil is not a bad name. I thought it was pretty good. In a few posts, Teresa will have time to ponder some of the other nicknames she could have gotten, and may revise her feelings about being "of the Faint Smile". Until then, there is always payback... wink.gif

mALX: Isn't it funny how getting angry made Teresa stop being nervous? Maybe she should get mad more often! laugh.gif Then again, that probably would not make the people around her very happy.

Olen: Yep, after all the build up, we finally got there. She does have teachers in people like Pappy and Tadrose. But unfortunately not archery teachers. We will be seeing the difference that makes in this coming post, as well as in future parts of this chapter, and chapters beyond.

ghastley: Kurdan will be in a future chapter... wink.gif

Acadian: Isn't it just like young girls to not be happy with what they have? wink.gif I too loved the juxtaposition between Buffy and Teresa. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster that entire episode was.

That was indeed "a moment" I wanted. Thank you for targeting that for me.

Grits: That was only the first of several Buffy sightings in this chapter. Some might say you can't swing a cat in Bravil without hitting a certain blond bosmer bowgirl...

That line with the Nothing else existed, was another one of the ways I wanted to show the zen archery that is natural to Bosmer. At least when they do not over-think themselves out of it as Teresa later did.

King Coin: That was one of my favorite chapters. Not only were Teresa's escapades in the guard tower funny, but her growing relationship with Vols, and later the catharsis with Simplicia, were very poignant to write.

D.Foxy: If only I had the time to read more books!

Previously on Teresa of the Faint Smile: Teresa took her turn on the firing line, only to find that Vincent had officially entered her into the tournament as "Teresa of the Faint Smile". Her first two flights of arrows were outstanding, especially the rapid fire, in which she simply shot without thinking about what she was doing. But her final, long distance shooting was poor, as she over-analyzed what she was doing, and second-guessed herself into doubt.

Chapter 34.12 - The Tournament Of Archers

Parwen shot next, and Teresa eagerly watched as the other wood elf drew her curious bow from the combination case and quiver at her hip. Again, Teresa noted how small it was. Made of a combination of golden sila wood, darker horn, and finally sinew, it was carved with the likeness of vines and leaves twisting along its length.

That was not all that was remarkable about it. Rather than bearing the "C" shape of a strung Imperial bow, Parwen's curved in and out along its length. First it was bent inward at the handgrip in the center of the stave. Then it curved forward in a quarter circle as it rose from either side of the grip. Finally it bent straight back toward her, then at the very tip curled forward again. Teresa even noted that a second ear had been added to each tip, giving it an ever greater curve forward.

Screenshot

Teresa watched with amazement as Parwen drew back an arrow and sighted in for her first shot. Just as the gro-Baroth's had, she pulled the string back and held it fully extended as she aimed. Yet the wood elf was clearly not as strong as the orcs! Then Teresa noticed something else. The twin ends of her bowstave were drawn back farther than those of a longbow could go. At least not without breaking.

That was not all that was strange about how the Valenwood elf used her bow. Parwen did not hold the string in the three-fingered draw to the cheek that Teresa had learned in the Imperial City. Rather the other elf hooked the silk cord under her thumb and forefinger, and drew the string behind her ear, so that the feathers of her arrow rested underneath her chin.

"How can she hold it back for so long?" Teresa wondered aloud.

"I believe she has an enchantment to improve her strength," Tadrose offered quietly. "In her gauntlets I would say. Or perhaps a thumb ring. Many archers use such fortifications to improve their aim, as well as to use stronger bows."

"Stronger bows?" The idea of fortifying her strength had never occurred to Teresa. Yet now that Tadrose had said it, it seemed like such an obvious thing. Even as far as she had come, she could see that she still had a great deal to learn about archery. "Is that one stronger? What kind of bow is it?"

"That is a composite bow from Valenwood," the dark elf responded, "and it is indeed more powerful than an Imperial bow. The horn and sinew at the front and back of the stave can bend farther - and store more energy - than a single piece of wood can. The recurve shape only adds to the power, as do the extra siha - or ears - at top and bottom. You have never seen one before?"

Teresa shook her head. It was amazing! She stared as Parwen took shot after shot. Yet she did not even look to see how her guild mate's arrows were hitting. Her attention was locked on the weapon in the other elf's hands. It was not only a work of pure beauty, but she also realized it was small enough to comfortably fire from a kneeling position; or even from sitting in a tree, or on a wagon.

"Where can I get one?"

"Valenwood. Every Bosmer archer there makes their own bows," Tadrose answered, and the wood elf's heart sank. Then it lifted once more as the Dunmer continued. "Daenlin might have one for sale. He makes them, but usually only for special orders."

"How long would it take for him to make me one?" Teresa asked, her mind dancing with visions of such a bow in her hands.

"About a year," Tadrose answered calmly. Teresa coughed, and felt her eyes grow wide.

"A year!" she gasped. "Why so long?"

"It takes time to assemble the pieces and wait for the glue to set," Tadrose explained. "Each part has to be done at a certain time of the year, then you have to wait for the next season. As with the rest of life, the best things come to those who wait. "

"I imagine they are not cheap either," Teresa murmured.

"They usually go for around two hundred septims here in Cyrodiil," Tadrose answered. "Less if you go to Valenwood."

"That's two thousand drakes!" Teresa sputtered. "I could buy a suit of elvish armor for that! Or an ebony sword!"

"You could." Tadrose began to clap, and Teresa looked up to see that Parwen was walking back to the group. Teresa glanced back at the scoreboard, and saw that the older wood elf had shot a seventy two. Four less than she had herself. That meant that so far she had scored higher than any other Fighters Guild member!

She added her voice to the cheers for her guild mate. The entire time though, she was staring at the woman's composite bow. Someday, she vowed, she would have one of her own!

* * *

Teresa finally learned the names of the other guild archers as they lined up to take their turns shooting. Sigvatr from Bruma, Sason from Anvil, Thibault Jastal and Sirollus Mercius from the Imperial City, and finally Llonmus Arethan from Cheydinhal. All carried the Imperial bow as Teresa did. All of them scored less than she, Parwen, and Lum gro-Baroth had. The latter gave Teresa a curious feeling of pride. She had indeed placed the highest of all the guild archers!

She was still trying to conjure up an explanation for how that could be while they all walked from the amphitheater. She looked up to see Parwen, and stepped toward the elf to ask her about her bow. But before she could reach the older archer, Fathis Aren beat her to it. His arms wrapped around the curvy Bosmer, and the next thing Teresa knew they vanished into the sea of kiosks surrounding the arena.

"It appears Parwen is enjoying the tournament." Tadrose's voice sang in Teresa's ear. The wood elf turned to take in the other elf. She had been so busy thinking about the tournament, and then Parwen's bow, that she had not taken the time to really appreciate how lovely the vice-commander was. Dressed in a short Dunmer skirt that exposed her legs from the knee down, she had added an Imperial-style chemise to it with a tight bodice laid over top. The effect was to pinch her waist into a gentle hourglass, accentuate her hips, and lift her small breasts high. The plunging neckline of her chemise left little to the imagination there!

By Dibella, how could a woman be so beautiful? Teresa wondered.

"I envy her," Teresa found herself saying, lifting her gaze to stare into the fiery pools of Tadrose's eyes.

"Don't," the Dunmer smith said, and slid one arm into Teresa's. "She will soon learn what every other woman in Bravil County has: the affections of Fathis Aren are as fleeting as gold in the Arena."

"Yes," Teresa agreed. She reveled in the soft scent of primrose that rose from Tadrose's skin, and the warmth of the dark elf's body against her own. "But at least she's happy right now."

"The grazelands are always greener on the other side of Red Mountain," Tadrose murmured. Then her voice picked up, and she smiled. "I already told Gaius that I am taking the rest of the morning off. Now why don't we go look for that shop with all the shoes?"

Notes: The bow in the screenshot is a Hunnish bow, and the draw using the thumb is the Mongolian Draw.
Captain Hammer
Finally caught up with this one as well.

It's truly interesting to see how Teresa interacts with her guild and her community. I'm enjoying her side of the Tournament as much as I am that of Buffy, something that surprised me. But I'm also surprisingly glad that I have a chance to read such great material.

One thing:
QUOTE
"I believe she has an enchantment to improve her strength," Tadrose offered quietly. "In her gauntlets I would say. Or perhaps a thumb ring. Many archers use such fortifications to improve their aim, as well as to use stronger bows."

Thank you for inserting this. As well as all of the other realistic elements of combat, but I especially enjoyed Pappy's remarks on the usefulness of plate armor for stopping annoying things like a Frakkin' claymore.

Though I wonder, does Teresa envy Parwen, or does she envy Fathis? hehe.gif
haute ecole rider
I really enjoyed reading about Parwen's qualifying trial. The description of her bow is really cool.

Last year over the summer I learned about Korean bows. Like the Hun bows, they're recurved composite bows. But they're unusual looking when unstrung, and when I think about it, I can see the tremendous amount of energy stored in those staves when they're strung up.

Like Cap'n Hammer, I wonder just who Teresa is jealous of? wink.gif
Olen
I suspect soon Teresa will be jealous of no one because she- SHOES!!! blink.gif biggrin.gif

I'd say Tadrose is definatly interested now. The question is will Teresa notice? And what of all the other people moving through Bravil, I suspect Parwen's affections might be just as fleeting. I can't wait to read on.

When you say stronger bows I'm interested - in what way? It's easy enough to construct a longbow with a draw-weight as high as you could want. More than about 200lbs and the person drawing it would have to be such a rediculous shape (and porbably use so many roids) that it becomes unworkable, and that's about what the big ones were. However I can imagine recurves might store more energy at a lower draw weight and be lighter so waste less... More my musing than anything, though I'm loving the details and looking forward to more.

I sense an archery lesson in the future, and probably a visit to Daenlin.

One nit (sort of): Every Bosmer archer there makes their own bows - this seems unlikely. Making a good bow is very very difficult (I've tried a few) so a professional archer would be better off having a bowyer make the bow and getting a superior product. Maybe.
Acadian
What a wonderful short bow Parwen is using! Teresa NEEDS one of those. No wonder she is envious of Parwen. However, as Tadrose wisely notes -
"The grazelands are always greener on the other side of Red Mountain," Tadrose murmured. Then her voice picked up, and she smiled. "I already told Gaius that I am taking the rest of the morning off. Now why don't we go look for that shop with all the shoes?"
What a delightfully TESish turn of an old phrase, particularly given Tadrose's homeland. WooHoo! Time for that shoe shopping!

Teresa's mind is swirling now I bet, with thoughts of the tournament, short bows, a beautiful Dunmer and shoes. What a lovely and fun set of priorities!

I am not surprised that Teresa finished first in her guild! She truly does have a wonderful natural talent (as Daenlin noted in BF). She is also dedicated to the bow and understands the need not to spread herself too thinly by trying to master too many things. Some alchemy, a little magic, some dagger blocking and plenty of bow!
mALX
I think I may have to agree with Olen here, it seems like Tadrose has all but spelled out her interest - if she cares she would have noticed Teresa's awkwardness and shyness in her presence, so maybe she is smoothing the path for darling Teresa? I hope so !!

I absolutely love this chapter!! Subtle interactions, and at the end ... hope. Awesome Write !!!
ghastley
You've thoroughly distracted me with this discussion of bow construction.

I've always thought that Alawen's insistence on your having a proper Elven bow before she'd train you was because a real archer on the development team was making a point about the unrealistic nature of all the others.
Grits
It looks like this tournament might lead to a shopping list. Strength enhancing enchantment, new bow, strappy sandals to go with a new Dunmer-style skirt…

All of them scored less than she, Parwen, and Lum gro-Baroth had. The latter gave Teresa a curious feeling of pride.

How heartwarming to see, finally! smile.gif But how true that Teresa would be the last one to feel proud of herself.

By Dibella, how could a woman be so beautiful? Teresa wondered.

Teresa, you’re supposed to thoughtfully nibble your lip when you say that. wink.gif

Chapter 5a—

First off, I am so glad you add more people and stuff to places like Weynon Priory. This is something I’ve noticed in other fan fics too, and it’s so nice to see. I was so worried when I first started writing mine and adding people and places, that some people would be like, “Well, that’s not what it was like in the game…” But the only reason there aren’t more people and buildings in the game is because it’s hard to do in a game. Just thought I would comment on that, because I am so happy to see that. It makes it more alive and real. And it makes me feel more comfortable adding buildings and people to my own story. smile.gif

Teresa felt herself wilt under his harsh words and even hasher stare. She wanted to squeak like a mouse and scurry off to hide. Exactly what she had done all her life when the Imperial Legion turned their wrath upon her. But she did not do so this time, much to her own surprise. Instead she shut the door behind her with only a slight tremble in her hand. When she turned back she saw the Redguard had a hand on her sword, as if it were just casually resting there.
Excellent! I love how you worded this, and how you had the normally mouse-like little Bosmer show confidence and an air or importance. Perfect!

Also, I liked the addition of the Redguard whom Jauffre sent to Kvatch. I wonder, will this Redguard be the actual hero of Kvatch?

And good for Teresa not taking Jauffre’s gold! It’s understandable that anyone in her situation would want to—but it shows a goodness in her that she didn’t take it. smile.gif

14.1

How different Teresa's attitude to the crowed city is now from the beginning!
While I was reading about the granary I was thinking “Good thing those didn't get hit.”
Nice description of the city! It really makes it alive!

14.2

Again, nice description of the city.
The general seems like a very likeable person. Teresa is so nervous around him, but I can tell he didn't mind her words.

14.3

I'm sounding like a broken record, but I just love the detail in the city and buildings!

QUOTE
"Cilinius, say hello to Teresa," the Redguard said with a nod to the forester.

"Sister," the Blade rumbled

Oh those Blades are much more tricky than the game let onto. I love it!

QUOTE
"Have you ever thought of becoming a Blade?"

If he had not looked so serious, Teresa would have laughed in his face.

Laugh I did!

I'm kind of surprised he offered her a job. I'm glad she didn't take it, that just doesn't seem like her.
At least at this point in the story.

I've been following the TF and several other threads for a while now and am finally deciding to, ah, make myself known. What's not to love about Teresa? From her red-headed temper to her charming timidness and everything in between, each time I come to the end of the last post I can't help but want more. Also, your in-depth knowledge of everything non-ES that you so flawlessly incorporate into your story continues to impress me. I can't wait to tag along with Teresa and Tadrose on their shopping trip smile.gif
Thomas Kaira
Lots of neat bow talk, and I do like me a good archery lesson!

Interesting you went to the Huns and the Mongols for inspiration (well, they're really the same people, actually, just different leaders). They are widely known as the best horseback archers the world ever saw. Keeping a steady aim while atop a galloping steed with a drawn bow is one of the most difficult feats you could hope to accomplish, and this reflects in their technology. As we saw, their bows were recurved, which makes it easier to maintain a draw, and the different grip was developed to ensure the string wouldn't slip from their fingers while the horse was jostling them around (fully enclosing the string with the two strongest fingers, as opposed to simply hooking the string).

The British style C-curve bow is excellent for range and accuracy, but if you want power and speed, the recurved bow is best. And if I may say so, that particular bow would fit Teresa like a glove.

15.1

Teresa must not remember very well what it was like for her when she just left the city. Methredhel would naturally be uncomfortable in the wilderness

15.2

wub.gif more wood elves being wood elves

15.3

I knew Valen Dreth sounded familiar.
Awww poor Teresa sad.gif

15.4

So this is how they meet. Chased by one of the brothers. I really do not like that shop because no more than one of the brothers are ever around and he never has what I need.

15.5

Holy heck it's Pappy!

Agghh! That damned Dunmer again!

15.6

Haha! I was wondering how they were going to take care of Dreth.

15.7

Cool! Raminus Polus makes an appearance again!
A very clever way to be rid of Dreth and a neat way to have Teresa learn a bit of magic.

15.8

Methredhel meets her guide smile.gif

Damn! Dreth's out? Kill him!!!!

Captain Hammer: It's Captain Hammer Time! biggrin.gif I am glad that the TF side of the TOA is coming across as engaging as the BF half of it. You hit the nail on the head (pardon the pun!) concerning Teresa and her relationships. That is one of the main things I wanted to focus on in this chapter. The others being Teresa's growing skill with a bow, and finally learning to manage her anger.

While I do not claim to be 100% real, I do strive for it. Just because the more true to life a story is, the more believable it is. Plus, I find real-world archery and melee combat to be just as exciting and enthralling as the fake stuff you see in movies, if not more so.

haute ecole rider: I think Teresa is more jealous of Parwen, because she has that bow! tongue.gif

That gungdo the Koreans use is really amazing to see isn't it? A great example of a massively reflexed bow. They use bamboo in them, which turns out to be excellent for bows because unlike wood, it does not have a grain.

Olen: You were on the right track about the greater strength of the composite bow. Part of it is the recurve shape which stores more energy (and thusly imparts more velocity to the arrow). The extra siha (or siyahs) do the same. The use of horn and sinew are what really give it power though. Wood has a compressibility of 1%. Horn on the other hand has a compressibility of 4%. While sinew likewise has a tensile strength 4 times that of wood. There are two basic forces at work in any bow. The inner edge - or belly - compresses, while the outer edge - or back - stretches. Horn is used on the belly because its greater ability to compress. Sinew was used on the back because of its greater tensile strength, and it's nature to spring back into place. The end result is that the composite bow can bend to lengths where a self bow of the same shape would snap, generate more energy, and do it all with less bow. It could also be left strung for much longer periods of time without danger of warping. That is not to say that you cannot make a longbow with the same draw-weight, but you will have to do it with much more bow, if you take my meaning.

Of course the composite bow has several drawbacks. The first is the amount of time it takes to make one. A master bowyer can make a self bow like the English Longbow in just a few hours (excluding chopping down a tree to get the wood). A composite bow takes a year to make. Most of that time being spent waiting for the glue to dry after putting on a piece, then adding the next and waiting more months for the glue on that to dry. The fact that glue is used to bind it all together means they are vulnerable to humidity, and especially submersion. They can literally fall apart if they get too wet. Because of that fish-glue was preferred, thanks to its resistance to moisture. The Chinese would laminate theirs to waterproof them. There is also considerably more finger pinch in a composite bow than in a self bow. That is why the Mongolian Draw using the thumb was used with it, rather than the three-finger Mediterranean Draw. Finally, a composite bow makes more noise when it is shot. Not a big deal in a pitched battle. But it could make a difference for a lone adventurer sneaking around.

All this (and more) will come out in the story in a later chapter, when Teresa has a chance to talk to someone who really knows their way around the Valenwood bow. In that last post I did not want to go into more detail than I did for fear of bogging down the story with too much technical information at once. Besides, while Tadrose understands the pros and cons of weapons like composite vs. self bows, she is not a bowyer or archer herself. So she is not a master of it, as someone like Daenlin is.

On the subject of Bosmer archers making their own bows, that was inspired by Eurasian nomads. Among them every archer made their own bow, as well as their own arrows. It is something they learned to do as children, just as they learned to ride, shoot, etc... Given that the Bosmer are supposed to be renowned archers, I think it fits well into their culture. Keep in mind of course that I said Bosmer archers, not every single Bosmer. Just like not every Altmer is a magician, not every Bosmer is an archer. They just have some natural advantages in that area.

Acadian: Teresa wants one of those bows, so she does indeed need one! biggrin.gif I am glad someone liked the grazelands line. I worked to come up with something that would suit the setting there.

mALX: If Tadrose is smoothing the path for Teresa, does that mean she is shaving down low now? wink.gif I suppose the real question is has Tadrose noticed how she herself feels about Teresa? Not to mention is she just as hesitant to make a move as Teresa is? Stay tuned, and eventually we will learn these things (I am not promising soon however!).

ghastley: Alawen insists you have an Elven bow? I never went to her for training, so I had no idea of that. I would say the iron bow is realistic though. For the most part it looks like the standard English Longbow (if you just take the metal bits out). That is why it is my second favorite bow, after the Elven one of course. The other ones do look whacked to me. That is why in the TF there are just two main bows: the Imperial self-bow (or English Longbow), and the Valenwood composite bow (or Hunnish Bow). We will see a chitin bow later in this chapter too, because I like the idea of a truly fantasy material being used. But those would be very rare outside of Morrowind.

Grits: You are right, there is so much shopping Teresa must do now! But sadly, she has to save her money for that house. sad.gif Maybe some day though... Oh noes, Teresa forgot to bit her lip! biggrin.gif I am glad that trademark of hers has become so ingrained that people look for it now.

Lady Syl: Like you said, the scale in OB works for a game. If it were a realistic size, it would make playing it boring. Who wants to walk hundreds of miles with nothing happening? But if you want to portray a realistic world, you really have to increase the scale on everything you see in the game. Just how much is a matter of personal choice however. Major cities of 10,000 people work as well as those of 100,000 do. The first was common in the Medieval Era, the second in the Classical one. But no one is going to believe a major city has only 80 people.

As much as she wanted to, Teresa just could not take that gold from Jauffre. It would have cheapened everything she had done. Like you, I am glad she chose to reject it, and leave her actions motivated purely by her love for the man who taught her to respect herself and take responsibility for her life.

King Coin: I am glad someone saw how unsuited to being a secret agent Teresa is. While she does have some of the skills, she just lacks the emotional mindset necessary to put aside her own freedom and do what she is told by other people. I doubt she will ever be that person. The legate was fun to write. I was channeling Dale Dye/R.Lee Ermey when I wrote him. Look for more of him in the future.

That was indeed Pappy Vitellus. I could not resist having characters like him and Raminus make cameos in the Young Teresa Chronicles. I like stories where the characters are tied together that way. Keep your eyes peeled for Pappy, as we will be seeing much more of him too. More of Dreth as well, as he will get his just desserts in chapter 25.

RainbowVeins: Hi Rainbow! Welcome to the TF! smile.gif Thank you for the compliments. I do study up on the things I write to try to make them feel as real as I can. Although I am still not perfect at that. Thankfully I have folks around here to lend a hand at that too, from laying eggs to cooking. Without their help, it would not feel nearly as true to life. smile.gif

Thomas Kaira: Teresa does indeed want one of those bows. I have pictured her (and wood elves) using them from the start. It has just taken me forever to get there. And she still does not have one yet!

Previously on Teresa of the Faint Smile: In our last episode Teresa watched Parwen shoot. She learned that her curious bow is of composite design, and is in fact the standard bow used in Valenwood. Naturally, she wants one herself. Now we go back to the guild hall the next morning, to find our fighters doing their morning routine of workouts.

Chapter 34.13 - The Tournament Of Archers

"I still can't believe you people work out like this every day!" Lum gro-Baroth exclaimed the next morning, his voice breathless. Like the other members of the Bravil Fighters Guild, he wore loose clothing, and his bare chest was covered in sweat. They tramped their way from the practice yard behind the guild hall and back inside. "This is like a legion training camp."

"That's right," Chance said. "It is. That's what makes us the toughest chapter in the Fighters Guild. Isn't that right Teresa?"

The wood elf simply nodded. Like the others, she was short of breath. But not nearly as much as she had been when she had first joined. Rather now she felt invigorated, her limbs loose and limber and ready for a new day.

"Besides working out with us, she runs laps around the city before sunrise," the Redguard went on. "What are you up to now Teresa, three?"

"Four," the wood elf replied with a faint smile.

"Four?" the orc's eyes goggled. "Damn, for a stringy little thing, you sure are full of surprises."

"If you only knew my friend," Ancondil clapped a friendly hand on the other mer's back.

"Alright you meatheads, if you're all done gawking over the women-folk, let's get upstairs and armor up," Pappy grumbled. Teresa wondered if he was disappointed in the performance of her and the other guild archers at the qualifications the day before? Or perhaps his previous night's trolling for women had not gone as well as he expected? "We've got breakfast and then weapon practice."

The fighters shuffled through the building and up the stairs to the second floor, where all the sleeping quarters were. Teresa sidestepped them and vanished into the kitchen instead. She had her own work to do this morning, and little time to do it in.

When the other fighters returned in ones and twos- now decked out from head to toe in armor and bristling with weapons - Teresa was cleaned from her Bloom spell and wearing her own leather armor. Her arrow bag was at one hip, and her bow tucked out of the way in her Thieves Bag. She helped Tavian set out the morning's fresh bread and tea, and even took pains to serve every member a cup of the latter, still steaming from the pot. Delphine Jend had been right about one thing. One of the benefits of destruction magic was that you could use it to warm your drink!

Kurz and several of the other new arrivals were not present. Still sleeping off the last night, Teresa imagined. According to Lum, Kurz had been spending most of his time in the taverns. Teresa wondered if he had come to Bravil to drink rather than to shoot in the tournament…

After breakfast they shuffled back out into the practice yard behind the guild hall. There the Bravilians drilled in small unit tactics, forming lines, circles, and columns at Pappy's command. Most moved with near perfection, except for Storm-Tail, who was still learning. While at one time Teresa had thought it was all silly, her experience in Culotte had cured her of that. Now she fully understood just how life-saving it was to rehearse these tactics.

The other fighters gawked for a while. Some returned to the guild hall, while Lum, Sason, and Thibault went to work practicing their archery on the targets against the city wall at the far end of the field. When the chapel bell tolled the hour, Teresa walked over to join the other archers. In the meantime the rest of the guild went back inside to the dojo to practice with their melee weapons. Teresa was surprised when Pappy returned a few minutes later, a longbow in hand and bag of arrows at one hip.

"You can shoot?" the wood elf asked incredulously.

"Of course," the Colovian replied. "A good fighter can use any weapon he picks up." He nocked an arrow and sent it downrange, plunking it halfway from the target's bullseye. "Granted, I don't get the practice that I do with other weapons."

Teresa wondered if Kurz was the same way, and spent more time training with his battle axe than with his bow? In any case, she turned back to her own target, and spent the next half hour firing direct, then switched to zone shooting until the chapel bell tolled the hour. Then they all filed back to the guild hall for hand-to-hand practice. While Tadrose instructed the others on the finer points of Digordorn - the Breton art of wrestling trips, throws and locks - Teresa and Pappy worked out with daggers.

"Time for you to start learning to attack with the blade," the Colovian declared. "First, always keep the point of your dagger facing the enemy. Whether you are using an overhand grip, or an underhand."

"Which grip is better?" Teresa asked.

"Neither," Pappy said. "Although some people will say one of the other. Each has its uses. We'll get into those later. I want to go over something more important before that - where to hit. Because if you don't put it in the right place, no weapon is any use."

"The face is always good, especially the eyes," the Colovian began. "It is one of the most difficult areas to hit though, as you already know from archery. Then we have the neck. It has to be lightly armored so a person can move their head. A slash to the side will open the arteries, across the front will strangle them in their own blood. But a man with his throat cut can and will still fight. So best of all is a stab up into the braincase. That is instant death. But not easy to get the angle right. It's best to grab their head from behind and jerk it to one side. Then you have a clear stab all the way up."

"Next is the armpit," Pappy continued. "Again, it has to be lightly armored so the arm can move. There is a big artery there, just under the skin. One slice and it's over. Then we go down to the groin. You have a big artery on each inner thigh. Cut or pierce one and your target will bleed out in no time at all. Finally you have the back of the knees. Again it's lightly armored at best, and will immobilize your opponent."

Teresa turned from Pappy to see Vincent scuttle from the dojo, one hand clutching his navel. She smiled faintly as they went back to their work. Pappy was taking her through the steps of various stabs and slashes when the Breton reentered the room and joined the others in Digordorn practice. Yet less than half an hour later Vincent was racing from the room again.

"There goes Vincent of the Quick Step!" she loudly declared. A chorus of laughs from the other fighters answered her.

"You didn't…" Pappy was now staring in the same direction as Teresa.

"Would I do something like that?" Teresa's eyes glittered in the morning light.

Ah ha, a little furosemide in the tea maybe? Lovely nickname for Vincent!

It's great to see the Bravil chapter bonding together over their strict training regimen and using it as an excuse to brag about themselves (a well deserved one, I'll admit). Just like the 101st or the Rangers, they've certainly earned the right to lord it over the other FG members!

Haha. Clever stuff and a good revenge. Was there some dandelion in Vincent's cup? Entertaining stuff, made me laugh, but it also shows how much mroe confident Teresa is now. When she joined she wouldn't have dreamt of something like that.

Right, got that filed away, so let's get to the story.

Or perhaps his previous night's trolling for women had not gone as well as he expected?

HAH!! Good to see it used in the older form. I've seen too many people on the stupid inter-webs ("IT'S A SERIES OF TUBES!!") fail to recognize that Trolling doesn't mean "cultivate an angry response," but rather "cultivate an amorous response." Though given the fine line between the two, I guess it's easy to see how the meaning got changed. Still, good to see some proper reclamation of language from today's mass of Plebs. biggrin.gif

EDIT: And I see Olen's already commented on the same. Though I must disagree, I'll let you settle the matter, since I don't want to be Trolling, in the flame-baiting sense, in the pages of the TF. Though, for what it's worth, Trolling and Trawling can be, and in some senses are, the same thing. Especially when we're talking about Pappy and his usual evening activities. laugh.gif

A delightful episode back at the guild! Gee, lots of little gems in here. . .

'One of the benefits of destruction magic was that you could use it to warm your drink!'
Magic! It's not just for breakfast anymore!

'Kurz had been spending most of his time in the taverns. Teresa wondered if he had come to Bravil to drink rather than to shoot in the tournament…'
Yes, I wonder what is the real reason he came to Bravil? wink.gif

'There the Bravilians drilled in small unit tactics, forming lines, circles, and columns at Pappy's command.'
As you know, I simply love the term 'Bravilians'!

'So best of all is a stab up into the braincase. That is instant death. But not easy to get the angle right. It's best to grab their head from behind and jerk it to one side. Then you have a clear stab all the way up."
Something tells me that whoever taught Pappy to fight with a dagger, also taught Aradroth. I believe it was the great teacher named SubRosa.

Speaking of clever teachers, it was quite smooth of Pappy to plink an arrow into the target before introducing Teresa to the dagger. He thereby diffused any possible protests on her part about being specialized as an archer. Pappy's not only smart, but he knows his people well enough to understand which buttons to push. He also knows how to lead by example.

"There goes Vincent of the Quick Step!"
So now we see why Teresa slipped into the kitchen! Oblivion hath no fury like that of a woman publically assigned a nickname she doesn't appreciate.

Oh, 'trolling for women' works beautifully for me! I may be showing my advanced years here, but it conjures an image of fishing. Specifically, trolling is slowly motoring over the water with your line submerged and hopefully dragging it in front of interested fish. In fact there are even very low power 'trolling' motors for boats to support such activity. Pappy was fishin' for womenz!

Nit: 'When the chapel bell tolled the hour, Teresa walked over the join the other archers.'
I'm sure you wanted 'to' here of course.

Excellent and superbly researched dissertation on bows and bowmaking, and the art of the dagger - and on exploiting weaknesses in armour, Rosa.

One thing about the recurve bow: unlike the self bow, stringing up the recurve bow is an art in itself, and not easily learned at all. In fact many modern historians believe that the bow of Oddeyseuss was one of the rare recurve bows found in Classical times, and that the technical difficulty of stringing that bow, and not the physical strength required, was the reason why that bow could not be strung by any other than Oddeyseuss himself.
haute ecole rider
Yes, Da Fox is right. I came across a video of how to string a Korean bow (or gungdo as you called it). It is something that requires both hands, both feet and lots of time. Not something you can do in a hurry when attacked - the bow just won't be ready. And then you have to balance it, and if I recall correctly, that requires steaming the darn thing.

I like stories like that too. Tom Clancy did that a lot with his books and I really enjoyed them.

Teresa has returned to the wilderness from the Imperial City. I love how she can't decide what to do now that she is near someone in the wilderness! I think that the game would have been much more interesting if you had to identify friend from foe more often out in the wilderness.

Teresa meets her first conjurers. Luckily for her they don't wear armor and are highly vulnerable to arrows laugh.gif

Teresa made a good choice and ran for it when things got to be too much for her to handle.

Mah plums! wacko.gif

"There goes Vincent of the Quick Step!" she loudly declared.

Perhaps we should now call her "Teresa of the Icy Tongue?"

Two major differences come to my mind between grip preference on your blade: overhand is better for slashing, and underhand is better for stabbing. Each way allows for you to apply more force to their respective attacks; for example, it is a lot easier to give a good, strong, two-handed swing capable of cutting through bone if you grip your blade overhand. Likewise, if the armor on your opponent is not platemail, a nice underhand-grip stab can easily penetrate it, as gripping underhand allows you to apply more leverage and weight to the stab.

However, as you say, neither is superior, so I would wager that a good swordsman would want to know when is the best time to switch grips. If you can utilize both, you will be that much more flexible in your swordsmanship, and flexibility is the currency of combat (alongside energy).

haute ecole rider: I had a natural laxative picked out that Teresa used to spike Vincent's drink. But it never made it into the final edit, and now I have forgotten what it was! But yes indeed, the Bravil FG is all bonding together thanks to Pappy's glue. Well, maybe not Teresa and Vincent! wink.gif

What I have read about even the "regular" recurves like the Hunnish or Mongol bows that the the ears can easily become twisted when you string it, or the entire stave become unevenly bent. Many of the guides I have looked at to string them also have you sitting on the ground to do it. I cannot even imagine how you string something like that Korean bow!

Olen: "Trolling for women" is a common saying here in America, at least in Michigan. As Acadian mentioned, it doubtlessly comes from fishing. I think magic would be used for so many more ways that as you see in the game, most of them simple things aimed at improving people's lifestyles. Such as how Buffy uses frost magic to chill her drink, or enchants a bag with it to create a portable refrigerator. I introduced heat stones to be magic crystals that replace burning wood for fires, cold stones to replace blocks of ice in an icebox, lightstones to make torches or lamps obsolete, etc... I think the Mages Guild would make a ton of money selling consumer-oriented magic items like this.

Captain Hammer: Lum's complaint/amazement was actually born from Acadian's BF 1.0, in the scene where Buffy meets Lum he says the local FG guild commander was crazy for drilling people like it was a Legion camp. Of course Acadian got that from how I had shown Pappy doing just that. So I could not resist Lum voicing the same thing in the TF version of the TOA. Not just for consistency, but also because it is true, and it shows how different in skill the Bravil Guild is from the other chapters.

Acadian: Perhaps we will eventually see just why Kurz is in Bravil... wink.gif

I read about that stab to the brain a long time ago. I think it was something by Michael Echanis? But I am not positive. Remember that Teresa has been training to use a dagger to parry with since she started in the Bravil FG. It was just not up until now that Pappy began showing her how to attack with it. After her experience in close quarter fighting in Culotte, she is more than happy to learn!

And yes, I did want "to" there, thank you for trolling that out of the word pond.

D.Foxy: Thank you D. I have also read that about Odysseos' bow. It would not surprise me, given the contact even the Bronze Age Greeks had with the east.

mALX: Well I hope Tadrose is not shaving while driving the carriage!

King Coin: Good guess on Teresa's Astral Temple! She will be going there more in the future.

Look for more of Teresa's ability to call upon the local spirits to show the past history of a place. I am mainly using it as a storytelling device to show what places were, and even just so Teresa can know the name of a place. It is not perfect however, and is useless for telling her things like who is in the place right now.

Grits: I think Pappy often does have his hands full! laugh.gif

Thomas Kaira: If she is called Teresa of the Icy Tongue, she is not likely to get many girlfriends! ohmy.gif Keep in mind that Teresa is using a knife, not a sword though. To her the latter is still a club with an edge.

Previously on Teresa of the Faint Smile: Out last episode saw Teresa getting even with Vincent's imbuing her with a public nickname by spiking his tea with a laxative. Also, the last episode of the BF showed a glimpse of Teresa having lunch with Aia the Wretched. Next, we learn exactly what she and Aia were talking about.

Chapter 34.14 - The Tournament Of Archers

"Aia!" Teresa cried. "I knew that kissing the Lady would help me find you. I didn't see you at your usual place on Silver Avenue."

The old, shoeless Imperial woman looked up from the headstones which she sat in front of. Teresa knew three places where she could usually find the beggar. Just outside of Nilawen's store on Silver Avenue, her squat at the south-western corner of the city, and the graveyard of the Benevolence of Mara.

"Won't let me go there will the City Guard, nor Cosmus or any of the other street folk," the beggar said, staring down at the grass beneath her feet. "Embarrass the city, they say we do."

Teresa felt her ears burn hot at the comment, and her fingers curled into fists. "They are the ones who embarrass the city," she fumed. "What with that cursed skooma den doing business right under their noses, and a crimelord running the south island like it was his kingdom."

Aia shrugged, and Teresa felt her heart break. She had seen that same motion so many times in Simplicia, and had done it countless times herself when she had been on the street - it was the resignation of defeat. The inescapable knowledge that one could do nothing to change their lot in life.

Well not today, Teresa vowed. She reached down and helped the grey-haired woman to her feet. "Come on, let's go get something to eat," she said, "then we can go to the tournament together."

"Not allowed there either am I!" the beggar exclaimed. "Throw me in the dungeon they say they will if I try."

"And I'll throw them in the Niben," Teresa grumbled. "You have just as much right to go there as anyone else, and the Fighters Guild will see to it."

"Oh Teresa, not into trouble you'll be getting yourself in over me," Aia said. "Used to it am I."

"That's the point," Teresa said. "You shouldn't be. No one should be."

The wood elf dragged the old woman down Lady Street to Silver Avenue. As they had been since the beginning of the tournament, the streets were busy with people. Now more than ever that the finals were only a day away. She saw more than one City Guardsman on the street, but Teresa's hard stare was enough to keep them at bay. Or at least she imagined that might have been it.

They stopped at the front door of A Fair Deal. When Teresa held the door open for Aia to enter, the old woman simply shook her head.

"Just wait out here I will," Aia said, looking nervously through the door at the interior of the shop.

"If you're worried about Nilawen, it will be fine," Teresa said as soothingly as she could. "She's not like those soldiers. She won't mind you being in the store."

"Not that it is," the old woman said, her eyes darting at the roof of the porch overhead. "Just don't like going inside do I. It's better outside. Much better."

As if to emphasize her words, the beggar stepped off the porch and back onto the pavestones of Silver Avenue.

"Okay, I'll be right back." Teresa could not help but to puzzle over the old woman's strange behavior. Ever since she had known Aia, she had never seen the Imperial indoors. Not even in the Benevolence of Mara, in spite of how much she loved to linger outside of the temple. What was it about buildings that the beggar feared?

Teresa returned a few minutes later with a pair of Nilawen's Redguard-style wraps. Teresa's was filled with refried beans, greens, and cheese, while Aia's packed with strips of beef and the same vegetables. The old Imperial bit into the sandwich with a look of surprise and delight.

"Beef this is!" she declared. "Are you knowing how long it's been since meat I've eaten?"

"Probably months," Teresa imagined aloud. Meat was rare enough for working class people, but even they could usually afford it once a week. Beggars were not nearly so lucky. Teresa could remember what it a treat it was, back when she had still been able to stomach meat. As it was she did her best not to think about the poor animal that died to make the wrap, and instead she simply focused on the happiness of the old woman.

"Years," Aia mumbled through a mouth full of spicy Redguard food.

"Let's go find a place to sit down," Teresa murmured. Looking around, she saw the street was packed with people going to and fro. Her eyes set upon the alley between A Fair Deal and Silverhome On The Water. Motioning for Aia to follow, she led the old woman inside and found a place to sit. She handed her own sandwich to the beggar for a moment and produced a bottle of Tamika's from the Thieves Bag at her hip. Drawing forth a pair of red-glazed pottery cups a moment later, she poured one for each of them.

Screenshot

"Teresa, too good for me this is!" Aia exclaimed as she took a sip of the fruity alcohol. "For fancy folk are drops like this."

"And there is no reason we cannot be fancy," Teresa said as they sat with the alley wall to their backs. "It isn't every day we have an archery tournament in town is it?"

"Nor every day compete in one you do," Aia smiled slyly. "Heard about you have I. A seventy six! Never told me you were such a champion did you!"

"I wasn't that good," Teresa felt her cheeks grow warm as she look down at her lap. "There were plenty who scored better."

"Pfft!" The old woman waved a hand at the Bosmer. "Not giving yourself enough credit again, are you? What would your sweet old mother think if she knew that competing you were? Imagine how proud she would be!"

That made Teresa only turn more red. It was true that she had already sent one letter to Simplicia, jotted down immediately after returning from qualifying the previous day. But the wood elf imagined that the Black Horse Courier would bring the news of the next day's finals to the Imperial City before her letter arrived at Jensine's shop. What would she be writing to Simplicia tomorrow? That she had won? Or that she had been laughed from the field?

Teresa thought she smelled bergamot, and looked up to see a Bosmer walk past the mouth of the alley. The slender woman's hair was the color of spun gold, and was tied back behind her head in a long ponytail. Her eyes were liquid blue, and while not haughty, bore an expression of quiet confidence. The other elf wore a dress of russet flax that was nearly identical to Teresa's own. She walked with her head turned, and looked Teresa in the eye before her steps took her beyond the alley.

That was the same woman she had seen in the stands with Daenlin the previous morning, Teresa realized, Dame Buffy! What a strange chance to see her on the street in a city nearly doubled in population since the tournament began?

"So do you know anything about Dame Buffy?" Teresa asked, "Or Daenlin?"

"Oh everyone in Bravil knows Buffy," Aia proclaimed. "Such a sweetheart she was when she was little. In the Mages Guild her mother was, an alchemist like you, so she was always over in their hall. That was before her parents… well… before died they did. Her godfather was Daenlin, so while Nilawen took her into her store to live, he's the one who taught Buffy right from wrong. Like the old saying: to ride, to shoot straight, and speak the truth. So proud of her he is now that she's a knight."

"So how did she become a knight?" Teresa asked. That had puzzled her since Tadrose had told her of the other Bosmer the previous day.

"Well, when she came back from the University did she, Buffy went down to Leyawiin for some reason or another. Don't remember exactly why. Down there she met up with this orc named Mazoga. That's it, just Mazoga her name is, no gra-something like other orc women. Tore up the local bandits for the Count down there, the two of them did, and made them both knights of Leyawiin did he. They live down there in this big fancy lodge by the river they do, and keep the countryside safe for them folk that live down there or travel through."

"Wait, you said the University?" Teresa wondered. "Do you mean the Arcane University?"

"Aye," Aia declared. "Went there she did when she was young. She's a real magician, and good friends with all them others over at the Mages Guild. Practically grew up there when she was little after all. Even friends with that Ungarion from The Warlock's Luck she is. I hear they were at the University at the same time."

A knight who was a magician, born from common stock. Teresa's mind whirled. Who would have imagined such a thing? She had thought all knights were finely bred men like Valerius Nasica, riding beautiful horses, wearing armor, and carrying lances. Not wood elves like herself, much less magicians and archers!

"So how could she have paid for the Arcane University?" Teresa asked. "With her being an orphan and all?"

"Paying for most of it was her godfather Daenlin hear I," Aia said. "But helped did Kud-Ei as well. Cold-blooded them lizard-folk may be, her heart's as warm as Mara's, that one's is."

"They aren't cold-blooded," Teresa said off-handedly. "People just think that because snakes and lizards are. But what about Daenlin? What is his tale?"

"Oh, here in Bravil for about forty years he's been now," Aia explained. "From Skingrad he came. Was in the Imperial Legion over there, or the City Guard. Which I'm not sure. I don't think he's originally from there though. I hear he was born in Valenwood. Came up to Cyrodiil for the work he probably did is my guess. Lots of Bosmer do."

Teresa nodded. Parwen had said the same thing herself.

"Real good friends with Buffy's parents Daenlin was - Superior and Terry Ann. Like brothers he and Superior were. Broke his heart it did when Superior never came back from his last vampire hunt. Ever since then Buffy's been his life. Never admit to it he will of course, being a man he is."

"I hear he's the best archer in Bravil," Teresa said.

"What they say, that is. But maybe not anymore." Aia winked at Teresa. "The best bowmaker in these parts he is, that's for sure. Makes them longbows like you got, and those funny bent bows they use in Valenwood. Arrows he makes too, and sells all sorts of things like them and quivers at his shop on the south island."

Teresa thought that over as she finished eating her wrap. Washing it down with the rest of her cup, she rose and helped Aia to her feet. Then taking the old woman in one arm, she led her north along Silver Avenue.

I see there seems to be some confusion about just what it was Teresa spiked Vincent's drink with. I had gathered the impression, because he was holding his crotch, that he needed to urinate badly. On the other hand, the urge to defecate is usually expressed by holding one's behind, often accompanied by the classic butt squeeze - to me, at least. Alternatively, it can also be expressed by holding one's abdomen, since most strong laxatives work by cramping. That's why I was thinking No. 1 instead of No. 2.

A laxative affects No. 2 - it stimulates the colon. Furosemide (also known as Lasix - mALX is right) is a diuretic, and stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine. It has a much more powerful effect than drinking a ton of coffee would. Putting a caffeine-laced drink (coffee, tea) together with furosemide would be a potent combination indeed! devilsmile.gif That's why I was thinking diuretic, not a laxative!

Anyway, back to Teresa's story. I loved the interaction between Aia and Teresa. Her outrage at the injustice of banning beggars from certain parts of town and the tourney in the face of blatant organized crime and corruption is completely understandable. The way she captured Aia's reluctance to enter a building is poignant. And the information about Dame Buffy and Daenlin is wonderful! And now she knows where she can get her hands on that recurved bow!
Olen
A break between the storms and a chance to catch up with a character from a while back, and a Bravilian (I love that term) who knows a bit more about certain people. I suspect we'll be seeing Daenlin soon... perhaps with Tadrose...

Teresa's anger at the treatment of the beggars is as I'd have suspected. I like how you've developed Aia though. Refusing to go indoors, makes me wonder why, and it also gives a reason why she's a beggar.

And you're certainly building up tension with the final. I wonder what Simplicia will be thinking, it was good opertunity to tie this piece back into the IC side of her life which seems a distant memory now - she's changed so much I wonder how well she'll fit in back there, I can hardly imagine her not in Bravil now. I look forward to the competition and the more distant events...

Two excellent episodes; entertaining and revealing. Vincent of the Quick Step sure got what he had coming! Pappy, meanwhile, showed why he has made it to the top in the FG with such frank discussion of the gory details of one-to-one combat. Look how he coolly and systematically explains te best way of turning someone into a bloody, crippled pulp. biggrin.gif

Teresa's naivete really comes through in the second episode. Alas, real justice often depends on how powerful you or your interest group is. And it's fair to say beggars do not rank highly on this list.

Some nice details in that second episode about how working class folk saw meat as a rare, protein-packed treat. This reflects how real life was for many peasants in medieval and early modern Europe; not only meat but cheese and protein in general was pretty rare, most days they just ate bread. I like how you weave these real-life references into your storytelling; they are always interesting.

Teresa really shines here! From her anger over Aia being shunted out of view, to dragging the old beggar along to a wonderful lunch. Those fingers curling into fists are getting to be another wonderfully endearing Teresa trademark. And the lunch sounded divine. Redguard wraps and Tamika's! tongue.gif

More mystery that complements Buffy's wondering about what may have happened in Aia's past that would cause the old beggar to refuse to wear shoes or enter buildings.

And Aia proves that the beggars really do know what is going on, right down to Teresa's score during quals. Such wonderful depth on the history of Buffy, her parents, Kud-Ei and of course Daenlin. Yup -
'Her godfather was Daenlin, so while Nilawen took her into her store to live, he's the one who taught Buffy right from wrong. Like the old saying: to ride, to shoot straight, and speak the truth.' wink.gif

And more wonderful hints that Teresa may try to get Daenlin to make her a marvelous new bow! smile.gif

Yippee its Vols! Brought a smile to my face pulling that joke on Teresa!
It seems his injuries didn't kill his humor at least.

Oh and I have to say this: Damn necromancers.

18.3

This isn't going to be pretty. Vols just grabbed a little thief making off with an apple.

biggrin.gif I wonder what made him change from smacking Teresa around as a child to buying this one food?
What ever it was, I'm very pleased! My heart was sinking and now it's soaring!

"Oh, it was not that bad, only a few skeletons and a ghost," Teresa did smile then, albeit only faintly. Not that bad at all, she thought to herself, aside from nearly being killed...

This had me grinning.

Teresa's having a very good day! I can only hope her night will be as good.

19.2

After hearing Nerussa's story it really sounds like having her career destroyed was the best thing that happened to her. Nerussa really sounds like she is enjoying herself running the small inn rather than being a courtesan.

Teresa is having a good night after all!

I always enjoy seeing the main character of any story briefly though the eyes of another character. I'm so happy for Teresa!

Speak like Yoda, Aia does. Interested to know why she fears buildings, I also am. biggrin.gif

When it comes to the Speaker for the Beggars, Teresa is the only one I can think of. She grew up as one herself, and now here she is, all growed up and turned into a respectable woman with a respectable job for respectable people and respectable meals and respectable clothes. Oh, and did I mention respectable shoes for Aia (if she will ever wear them)?

And I fully support her decision to rage a guard's face off if Aia is to be kept from the tourney. You show em, Lass of the Fiery Locks! IPB Image

Teresa felt her ears burn hot at the comment, and her fingers curled into fists. "They are the ones who embarrass the city," she fumed. "What with that cursed skooma den doing business right under their noses, and a crimelord running the south island like it was his kingdom."

I’ve tended to see mostly the idyllic side of Bravil throughout the TOA, it was good to get a reminder of how the rest of it is.

I thought that looked a lot like Buffy’s outfit! How nice to see Teresa in a dress. smile.gif

They live down there in this big fancy lodge by the river they do, and keep the countryside safe for them folk that live down there or travel through."

And here’s a good reason not to expect to see Buffy all of the time in Teresa’s Bravil after the Tournament is over.

I enjoyed Teresa’s lunch with Aia tremendously. Sharing food, wine, and information in the alley instead of Nilawen’s, they could both be comfortable.

I knew after how good things were that something was going to go wrong. I just didn't think that it would be her friends hating her.

Oh my gosh, was she really going to use the arrow? She must have been very scary if even the thugs scattered. This is not the Teresa I'm used to. Her temper is running out of control.

Wow these past few chapters have been very powerful.

I'm happy Methredhel came for Teresa.

She has been shunned from the people she has been with her entire life. At least she still has Methredhel. smile.gif

haute ecole rider: I went back and edited Vincent's walk of shame a bit to say that he was clutching his churning navel than his privates. That should make things more clear. It will be a few more chapters before Teresa gets her mitts on a Valenwood bow however, and it will not come from where most people probably expect...

Olen: Daenlin and Tadrose together! wink.gif That would break Teresa's heart! (and probably surprise Buffy as well...) I do know the reason for Aia refusing to go indoors, but it will be a while before Teresa learns it. Eventually she will though. Like you, I have a hard time imagining Teresa in the Imperial City anymore either. Bravil is definitely her home.

Ceidwad: Yep, just as bread and porridge were the mainstays of the peasant diet for thousands of years IRL, they are in the TF as well. It is a sad irony that the people who produce nearly all of the food tend to be the ones to eat the least of it.

Acadian: Well, hopefully Teresa will start doing something about those fists before they do become ingrained! I remembered you liked the line about "to ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth." from BF 1.0. Is that from a song? I know it from the Persian Immortals, who were said to have been taught the same since birth.

King Coin: Everyone defines vegetarianism differently. You have never heard of them eating seafood? For example, in the U.S. Catholics are required to abstain from eating meat on Fridays. So they eat fish instead. It is only Vegans who will not eat anything remotely connected to animals. At the other end of the scale, there are even people who call themselves vegetarians who eat chicken. Go figure. Teresa has her reasons for eating crabs and other seafood, and not deer and cows. They will be further explored after she reaches Bravil.

Skeleton's scare Teresa simply because of how they look. The whole grinning skull freaks her out more than rotting flesh does (although she does prefer the smell of skeletons over that of zombies! wink.gif) Just one of her idiosyncrasies.

Vol's change of heart in that chapter was hinted at at the end. You will see more of that in future chapters as well, from his point of view no less. Suffice to say, Teresa's change of character has had a big impact on him, and has caused him to reexamine his own choices in life.

And you have seen Teresa's temper reach its most explosive point. That chapter shows just how much she has become accustomed to violence, and how little control she sometimes has over herself at times. Hopefully she will learn to reign that temper in...

Thomas Kaira: If only Aia had Yoda's powers! She could throw down against Darth Terentius and free Bravil from the oppression of the Sith. wink.gif All without shoes! laugh.gif

Grits: Many people have commented that Bravil in the TF seems very quaint and charming. So I did want to acknowledge its darker underbelly as well. We will be seeing more of the shady side of Bravil in future chapters as well.

When Acadian told me what outfit Buffy was going to be wearing on the 3rd day of the tourney, I could not resist having Teresa wear the same thing to reinforce the synergy between the two Fs. Besides, the russet felt outfit is just the kind of thing Teresa would wear on a regular basis.

Previously on Teresa of the Faint Smile: In our last episode, Teresa had lunch with Aia, and learned a bit more about Dame Buffy and Daenlin. Next she and the beggar head to the tourney grounds.

Chapter 34.15 - The Tournament Of Archers

"How about I buy you a pair of shoes?" Teresa said, looking down at the old woman's bare feet.

"Oh, not for me," Aia held up one hand to wave off the idea. "Never stand the things could I. Make my toes feel like they're strangling do they."

Then they were at the North Gate. As they passed through the stone gatehouse, the sound of armor clanking at a jog made Teresa turn her head. Through the people on the avenue behind her, she saw a pair of armor-clad men coming up at a trot. One was a Redguard wearing steel plate. A Dwemer mace hung from his hip, and a small kite shield was in his left hand. The other was an Orisimer clad in gleaming Dwemer armor, with a great elven war hammer slung over his back.

"Ancondil! Chance!" Teresa exclaimed. "What are the two of you doing in your armor? Do you have a contract?"

"Sort of," Chance breathed as the pair came to a stop next to Teresa and Aia.

"We shall be offering our services at the wagering booths," Ancondil explained, "providing the winners with escorts to the Temple of Zenithar."

"But the tournament hasn't even really started yet," Teresa said under beetling eyebrows. "What is there to bet on?"

"People will gamble on anything." Chance grinned. "There are standard wagers on every qualifier. Will they get a perfect shot, perfect flight, or perfect round? Will they miss completely? Will they shoot over eighty? Or seventy? There's a lot of money to be made."

"And with it, plenty of opportunity for pickpockets," Ancondil said. "That is where we come in."

"That is brilliant of you two!" Teresa thought aloud. The mass of people crowding both the fairgrounds and the city was a succulent target for thieves. Teresa imagined that the smartest were watching the gamblers to see who won, and arranging a rendezvous with them afterward. It was just the kind of thing Methredhel would do. A smart winner would hire one of her guild mates to walk them to the temple, where they could deposit their money into the safety of the church vaults.

"And how about the two of you?" Chance looked from Teresa to the old woman beside her.

"This is Aia," Teresa said, turning to the beggar. "She's a friend of mine. We're going to the fairgrounds to watch some of the qualifications. Aia, these are my guild mates, Chance and Ancondil."

"Oh, knowing them I am," Aia said as she first looked to Chance. "Real popular with the womenfolk this one is. Out to dinner he took two of them on the same night, without either of them knowing!"

Then she turned to Ancondil. "Plays the lute and writes poetry this one does. Got connections in Cheydinhal too, in the Mages Guild. Invited to Lady Scaurus' ball you are tonight, along with our dear Teresa."

"Well, you certainly are well-informed!" Ancondil exclaimed as the group resumed their walk to the fairgrounds. "I only received the invitation a few minutes ago."

"Talk servants do," Aia said with a twinkle in her eye. "Just like water, flows downhill it all does."

"I never got invited to a ball," Teresa said under scrunched eyebrows. "Why would a patrician want anything to do with me?"

"Oh, waitin' for you it will be when you get back," Aia said, patting one of Teresa's hands with her own. "Count on that you can. Liking you the lady is they say, what with you guiding her out in the forest the other day, and healing that bear in the woods durin' the harvest."

"Besides, you're the best shooter in the guild!" Chance declared. "I saw your score on the board. People are betting on you to win the whole thing you know."

"What!" Teresa's eyes threatened to leap from their sockets. "That's crazy! I'm not that good. Did you see how Daenlin scored? or Dame Buffy? I don't stand a chance."

"Hey, when it comes to having a chance, no one knows better than me," the Redguard laughed. "You are going to do good."

Then they reached the line waiting to get into the fairgrounds. As before, City Guardsmen stood at every entrance, while others wandered in and out of the crowds that entered and left. Teresa reached into her Thieves Bag and withdrew her guild medallion. A moment later she hoisted it over Aia's head and lowered the shield-shaped pendant and its heavy chain down around the old woman's neck.

The two men raised their eyebrows, but said nothing as they came up to the entrance. Instead they both took off their gauntlets to show blue ink stamps on the backs of their hands. Proof that they had already paid for the day's entry into the grounds. When Teresa and Aia reached the grounds, one of the guardsmen stared at the beggar.

"Her kind's not allowed here," the mail-clad warrior proclaimed, stepping to block the entrance.

Teresa opened her mouth to speak, but before she could Chance stepped between her and the guard.

"Her kind?" the Redguard growled. "Let's just talk about her kind."

Then Ancondil stepped to his shoulder. Saying nothing, he merely glowered down at the Bravil soldier.

"No beggars allowed on the fairgrounds," the guard muttered, looking from one armored man to the other. "No exceptions, by order of the Count."

"There aren't any beggars here," Chance said, now turning to Ancondil. "Do you see any beggars? I don't see any beggars."

"I see none at all," Ancondil answered. "We are all members of the Fighters Guild. Your Count never said anything about the Fighters Guild being barred from the fairgrounds did he?"

"What's holding things up?" the voice of another man came from the back of the line. The author came into view with a jingling of mail. Another City Guardsman, Teresa saw, who looked familiar for some reason.

"Marius!" the first guard exclaimed, "this bunch is trying to sneak in a beggar!"

Now Teresa knew the man. He stood guard alone at the entrance to the city nearly every day, on the north side of the river. He had been there the day she had arrived in Bravil, and she could not count the number of times she had passed him while coming and going from the city since then.

"Do I look like a beggar?" Teresa faced Marius with her hands on her hips.

"No," the new guardsman admitted, looking from her to Aia. "Not one bit."

"Then what is wrong with our money?" Teresa grumbled, holding up a pair of quarter-cut drakes. "It isn't good enough for your Count?"

"It's just fine," the guard said. He stepped forward to take cut coins from Teresa and dropped them through the slit atop a locked box at the gate. Reaching for an ink stamp on the table next it, he tattooed the wood elf's hand with it, and then Aia's. "Enjoy the tournament citizens."

Teresa could not restrain a faint smile as she looked Marius in the eye. She would never forget his name - or face - again.

Yaaay, Marius! There has to be at least one guardsman with a heart in Bravil!

I loved how Teresa solved the problem of Aia's entry into the tourney, and even more so, how Chance and Ancondil backed her up without discussion. "I don't see a beggar, do you see a beggar? No, I don't - just us Fighters Guild!" Way to go, guys! I'm liking them more and more as you keep writin' 'em!

One not-really-a-nit as it isn't part of the story: it's the use of reign. I'm noticing people are using the wrong reign versus rein. Rein refers to the straps on the bridle that riders hold to restrain their horses from going forward. Reining them in slows them down or stops them, in the context that is being used, rein would be the appropriate choice as it restrains forward momentum, energy or recklessness. Reign refers to the rule of the king, and is more appropriate when referring to a period of time, such as the reign of the sun in the daytime sky, or the reign of Masser came to an end as it dropped below the western horizon.

One easy way to remember (though it's so ingrained in me it's automatic which to use, but for those unfamiliar with equestrian terms, here ya go) would be that reign is associated with the king. If you are not talking about the king's rule, you don't need the gee.

After Teresa's prank she'll need to be careful of eating or drinking anything in that guild for a while (unless she wins the tourney, lol) Vincent may retaliate with his own version of the "Electric Kool-aid Acid Test."

Like Haute, I assumed it had to be pee because of the placement of his hands as he ran (but wanted to cover all bases just in case). Her description of the actions of someone with the scoot's was quite accurate (and funny). It is probably better you didn't post any actual ingredients that cause it though, in case someone tries it out and gets arrested for poisoning a fellow employee, lol. "I learned it from SubRosa's story ... "

The above was written when you first posted 34:14, I had to stop reading due to the trip. Now I finally have time to finish reading this episode! (Yeah !!)

How like Teresa to become inflamed at Aia's treatment, ready to take up arms and dare anyone say it in her hearing - Awesome example of what we all know and love in Teresa !!

QUOTE

The old Imperial bit into the sandwich with a look of surprise and delight.

"Beef this is!" she declared. "Are you knowing how long it's been since meat I've eaten?"

"Probably months," Teresa imagined aloud. Meat was rare enough for working class people, but even they could usually afford it once a week. Beggars were not nearly so lucky. Teresa could remember what it a treat it was, back when she had still been able to stomach meat.

"Years," Aia mumbled through a mouth full of spicy Redguard food.

Teresa's inner thoughts and worries over Aia - clearly the woman reminds her of Simplicia, but it goes deeper than that. Teresa's identity is strongly entwined with the homeless, which is proven as the memories of her own hunger and how much it meant to get the occasional scrap of meat back then.

QUOTE

As it was she did her best not to think about the poor animal that died to make the wrap, and instead she simply focused on the happiness of the old woman.

How touching this was, setting aside her own strong feelings about meat consumption to give Aia something that Teresa knew from her own experience would be a rare treat for the woman.

I am really enjoying Aia's dialect as well, an awesome touch to aid in envisioning the scenes with her!

A great episode - ooh, and a Buffy sighting !! Now to read 34:15 !!!

Aia's dialect is interesting - reminds me of Thorn, the court jester from Final Fantasy IX. Any particular reason behind this? It's a nice touch at any rate.

Yet again, Teresa's righteous fury leads her to defend the weak and helpless. She is clearly a generous soul, as are her companions. (Quite the opposite from my mage, who barely acknowledges the poor's existence, let alone condescends to talk to them.) As others have said, this side of Teresa's character builds nicely on her past life experience and her empathy with the poor makes real sense.
Acadian
Lots of smiles to be had here!

Having the FG involved in contracts to support winning betters is a great idea and makes perfect sense. And how handy your church sponsored banks are! goodjob.gif

Aia knows everyone/everything, she does! Certainly about Chance, Ancondil, Dame Buffy, Daenlin and formal ball invitations!

I see that like Buffy, Teresa has ferreted out a Bravil guard who is worth his salt. Buffy knows three of them like that. The rest. . . well, not so much. kvleft.gif

Oh, I so hope that Aia enjoys her time watching some shooting on this last day of tourney quals. And perhaps looking at some of the wonderful shops and merchant tents/stands (even if she can't afford to buy). It's pretty much all outdoors, so Aia should be comfortable! As we noted, Buffy also commented on Aia's mysterious fear of wearing shoes and entering buildings. Here's hoping that Teresa can figure out the reason and possibly even help Aia.

So, it seems Ancondil and Teresa may be going to a fancy ball! How neat!
ghastley
The thieves' guild are right: the beggars know everything that goes on. Most people have trained themselves to ignore them, so they can be right there is plain sight watching, and they won't be seen. They'll get all the juiciest gossip from the servants to the nobility, too.

The Fighters cohesion is definitely showing; they instictively know how to support each other in any situation. I suspect they're collectively just as aware of the beggars as an intelligence source as the Thieves are, just less reliant on it as they work alone less often.

And now Teresa needs to go shopping. She's got a formal ball to attend!
Grits
Chance and Ancondil, I sure like to see those two together!

"What!" Teresa's eyes threatened to leap from their sockets. "That's crazy! I'm not that good. Did you see how Daenlin scored? or Dame Buffy? I don't stand a chance."

I love Teresa’s natural and spontaneous reaction here. She is clearly among friends, with no need to hide or minimize her feelings.

"Her kind?" the Redguard growled. "Let's just talk about her kind."

Then Ancondil stepped to his shoulder. Saying nothing, he merely glowered down at the Bravil soldier.

And this is why I like to see Chance and Ancondil together!

Teresa at a ball, who would have predicted it! With the foul Countess from Leyawiin most likely in attendance, I hope Teresa can control her flaming fist of death.

Thomas Kaira
Stickin' it to the Man, Teresa is. Most proud of her, I am! biggrin.gif

Sometimes, despite how Teresa would want none of the fame she is gaining, it really does pay off to be noticed. This is one of those chapters where she is finally coming to grips with being a woman of some status, and fairly good status too. Being a member of a reputable band of mercenaries who are known to get the job done in as honorable a manner as possible is quite a tie to her name, after all.

She is certainly come far as a character. I remember back when she was nothing more than a street urchin with not a Drake to her name and no confidence in herself whatsoever. What a turnaround! This really cannot be stressed enough, you have shaped one of the greatest characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading about.
Olen
Took me a couple of days to catch up this time... but it was worth it. When I said see Daenlin with Tadrose I meant Teresa with Tadrose going to his shop (I can't really see the other way being likely), but I was monsterously unclear.

"People will gamble on anything." Chance grinned. "There are standard wagers on every qualifier. Will they get a perfect shot, perfect flight, or perfect round? Will they miss completely? Will they shoot over eighty? Or seventy? There's a lot of money to be made."

The first thing which sprung to my mind was spot fixing. 'I bet she misses the second arrow in the untimed short range', with good odds I suspect. A couple of thousand on that, miss and split the profit - one house for Simplicia...
QUOTE
"Besides, you're the best shooter in the guild!" Chance declared. "I saw your score on the board. People are betting on you to win the whole thing you know."

I wonder if he's thought the same... not that I can see Teresa going through with it at the end of the day.

You showed some more of the guild comeraderie with Chance and Ancondil's unquestioning acceptance of Aia. Them getting her into the event was great, fun stuff with the bewildered guard.

And a ball in the near future... I wonder if the invitation will be for two, and whether Teresa will work up the courage to ask a certain smith, if she hasn't got one. Doubtless Aia knows all, and hopefully I will soon smile.gif
SubRosa
haute ecole rider: And now we know why Marius has the crap job of standing guard alone at the front gate nearly every day... wink.gif

mALX: Yes indeed, after spending nearly all of her life as a beggar and street urchin, Teresa cannot help but to identify with those same people. Not to mention feel more comfortable around them then "respectable" folk.

Ceidwad: I gave Aia that way of speaking because - as others have noticed - she is very similar to Simplicia. Both are old, Imperial women who are beggars. And both have a motherly relationship with Teresa. So I wanted something that would make Aia stand out and be unique. Yoda to the rescue!

Acadian: I have been looking for ways that the FG could earn money thanks to the tourney. Hence the Breton diamond merchant from earlier, Teresa's picnic expedition, and now Ancondil and Chance's idea to bodyguard winners.

ghastley: One of the things I like about Oblivion is how they use the beggars as more than just window dressing, but actually put them to work as intelligence-gatherers. Such an excellent role for people whom as you say, have a way of being invisible to everyone around them.

Grits: The encounter with Chance and Ancondil gave me an opportunity to show the kind of loyalty inspired by Pappy. All for one, and one for all, as the old saying goes. We have seen how they hang out together, now we finally got to see how they will not hesitate to throw down for one another.

Thomas Kaira: Teresa is a rebel! Next she'll have a Che Guevera poster in her room. wink.gif She has indeed come a long way from that street urchin who was practically afraid of her own shadow, to standing up to guardsmen on a principle.

Olen: You are a nefarious one! Luckily Teresa is not so devious to throw the tourney to win a bet. But I doubt they would let the contestants bet, just because of that.

Previously on Teresa of the Faint Smile: In our last episode, Teresa and Aia made their way into the tourney grounds, with a little help from Chance and Ancondil. In the process Teresa met a city guardsman who appears to be an ally. Next, Teresa and Aia enjoy the 3rd day of qualifications.

Chapter 34.16 - The Tournament Of Archers

"Now shooting, Aradroth of Bravil!"

Even as high as she and Aia sat in the stands, the announcer's voice still boomed in Teresa's ears. She looked down to see the mer in black lurking at the firing line. Like the first time she had seen him at Nilawen's store, the indigo linen he wore was rumpled, and his hair was a tousled mess. He raised a recurve bow like that of Parwen's, and skillfully put his arrows into the target.

She watched with rapt attention as the other wood elf went through the rapid-fire round next, and then finally the long range shots. He did not do as well as she had in the quick-fire, she noted with a tinge of pride. But was far superior in the final flight of arrows.

Teresa frowned. She was never going to do well with a long distance score like the one she had in the qualifications. She knew that she could do better. She had in the past - such as at Belda - when it really counted. So why was it so much harder during the tournament?

"At it again, there you are," Aia teased from beside her. "Calling you 'of the Faint Smile' they are, 'cause of you always looking like that."

Teresa fumed. "They call me that because that fetcher Vincent played a practical joke on me! Now all of Cyrodiil is going to be calling me that."

"Oh dearie," Aia shook her head, "calling you that people have been since you first came here. If wantin' to know why you are, then look right there." Aia pointed to Teresa's face, and nodded sagely.

"So what if I don't grin like a fool all the time!" Teresa huffed. "Maybe I don't have a reason to?"

"Not carin' if you do or don't is I," the beggar said quietly. "But why is it that you do?"

Teresa opened her mouth to reply, then shut it again a moment later. Why did she care? So what if people called her that? Of all the nicknames to have, it was hardly bad. Not like 'Teresa who can't hit the broad side of a barn' would be, or 'Teresa of the corpse-white skin', or 'Teresa of the dyed hair'.

"I'm sorry Aia," Teresa breathed. "I didn't mean to snap at you."

The next archer came up to begin her first round, a Dunmer with red hair. Teresa mused over what Ancondil had said about the Shadow Self. What was lurking in her Shadow, that was making her so angry? What would she find if she began turning over the stones in her Lower Self? Would she like what she saw? Probably not. Yet could she afford not to?

Ancondil had not gone into details about how he had faced his Shadow, just that a priestess in Cheydinhal had taught him to meditate. She imagined that it was in those meditations that Ancondil met his darker side. He had suggested that she talk to one of the priestesses of Mara at the Benevolence.

She could try talking to Olava about it, but imagined that the priestess would simply laugh in her face. Who wouldn't?

Bear would not, Teresa thought. Nor Raven. Nor any of the other Nirn Spirits. Could they help her face her Shadow? If she journeyed to her Astral Temple to face her Shadow, would either of them come to her? Or even a new spirit?

She would find out.

Teresa looked up to see the Dunmer archer make her long distance shots. Again, far superior to her own. Teresa sighed. She was going to lose for certain. Glancing up at the scoreboard, she saw the dark elf was named Zerina Sarethi of Gnisis, and made a mental note to remember it. She had no doubt the other woman would make the finals.

"Doing good you are," Aia interjected into Teresa's musings. "Look at your score. Not many better than that, there are. In the finals you'll be for certain."

Teresa stopped and looked over the long list of contestants. There had to be at least a hundred, if not more. Yet Aia was right. Only a handful had scored higher than she had. How could that be, when supposedly the best archers in Cyrodiil were attending? Not to mention outside it, as she was certain that Gnisis was nowhere within the Imperial province's borders.

"Shooting next, Alawen, ranger of Anvil County!"

Teresa looked down to see the next archer. She was a wood elf, and carried a composite bow like that Parwen. Her hair was sandy brown - the same color that Teresa's was underneath the henna that dyed it red - and she wore a suit of leather armor nearly identical to the Bravil forester's own as well.

A loud shout erupted from the stands as the ranger took her first shot. It must have surprised the ranger, for Teresa could see her hand jerk as she released. Wincing as the arrow flew downrange, Teresa saw that Alawen at least hit the edge of the target, albeit barely. So it was not a complete disaster for the Bosmer from Anvil.

Alawen took long moments to compose herself after that first, errant shot. Yet when she began firing again Teresa simply stared in amazement. Alawen's form was near flawless. She drove every following arrow into the bullseye except for one. Teresa's jaw nearly dropped at the display, and she was certain she was not alone. Still, her final score was an eighty four. Only slightly behind the reigning champion Daenlin, and his protégé Dame Buffy.

The Bosmer ranger walked from the field to the cheers and applause of the crowd, Teresa included. Alawen was the most amazing archer that the young wood elf had ever seen. Yet even still, she had not matched Bravil's two experts. What would it be like tomorrow, to see all three of them shoot? Teresa had to admit that she was looking forward to that more than competing herself. She was simply not in the same realm as that trio when it came to archery.

As if summoned by her thoughts, the same golden-maned Bosmer that she had seen from the alley fell under her gaze. Dame Buffy herself, Teresa thought, and sitting beside her was her godfather Daenlin. The Bosmer knight appeared to be staring directly into her eyes, and Teresa bit her lip. Then the plainly-dressed woman smiled, and lifted her hand to wave. Teresa wondered if the blond was really looking at her after all, and could not keep herself from glancing to either side. Yet when she saw none other waving back, she found her own hand raising in a shy reply.

Then a line of people stepped in front of her, moving from their seats farther down the row to the aisle next to where Teresa and Aia sat. After they had left, Teresa could not find the two Bosmer archers in the crowd again. It was as if the mass of people had simply swallowed them up. Twenty thousand, Pappy had said, and the stands were nearly full today, being that the finals were tomorrow.

The next archer was a high elf from Chorrol named Honditar. Where Alawen had been simply an Aedra of the bow, he was not even a Daedra. Kurz had shot better, and she had overheard the Orisimer tell Ancondil that he was not really a bowman, but an axe fighter.

Teresa's gaze wandered again, down to the velvet-draped boxes at the lowest level of the amphitheater. Patricians and equites sat on cushioned chairs within, being served what was undoubtedly wine and brandy in silver goblets. Teresa thought she recognized one of them. A middle-aged Imperial who graced her seat like it was the Ruby Throne of the Empire itself.

"Tell me about Lady Scaurus," Teresa asked Aia. "What is she like?"

"The Great Lady of Bravil, Metella Scaurus is," Aia replied, following Teresa's gaze to the private seats below. "Born here in Bravil she was, a year before that fetcher Jagar Tharn betrayed our good Emperor - the gods rest his soul. Her father was Oppius Scaurus. Owned most of the land around here before the silver was found, he did. A gold mine too, up in the Great Forest, a bit off the Green Road. Sold a lot of the land he did, when the city grew up around the silver. Lots of little villages today, like Silverbridge, Strawbottom, and Sunsheight was all his land once upon a time."

"Went off to the Imperial City the lady did when she was a youngin', to get all educated properlike," Aia went on. "Came back she did, when her father passed. Just your age she was then, younger maybe. She's run the family fortune ever since."

"Did she marry?" Teresa asked. It seemed odd that she had never heard of a Lord Scaurus. Imperials always wanted to marry. It seemed the most important thing in their lives. Although why escaped Teresa.

"Almost she did," Aia sighed. "Fell in love with a dashing young knight did she. Sir Horatius Cocles. Died he did in High Rock, yet saved the city of Wayrest he did from marauding orcs from Orsinium. Single-handedly he fought 'em at a bridge, while burned down behind him it did. Some say it was the orcs that killed him, others that he drowned in the river when the bridge collapsed. But either way, died he did, and the orcs couldn't cross."

"Broke the poor Lady's heart it did," Aia went on, "and her just twenty at the time. Poor thing. She never did court another man again, and for that honor plenty have competed, to be certain! Since then, it's the Queen of Bravil she's been though. Come and go the Counts do, whenever the Elder Council appoints 'em, or sends 'em packing. Won't be soon enough when they send this one on his way, let me tell you." The old woman spat on the wooden boards under her feet for emphasis. "But Lady Scaurus, she's the soul of the city. Always lookin' out for us poor folk she is. Gives us places to sleep in the winter, when it gets really cold, and passes out bread so no one starves. Holds the biggest balls too. Not just this one for the tourney, but every Saturalia she throws a grand one. In Rain's Hand she has a costume ball on Jester's Day. Then of course there's the Mid Year festival, and the Emperor's Birthday. You can always tell what time of year it is, by the ball Lady Scaurus gives."

The really wonderful thing about this Bravil tourney is the ability it gives us to see the same events and the same cast of characters from two different perspectives. I recognized several moments in this section from the BF, yet they were infused with Teresa's own spin on things.

And a little more of the history of the town and of the mystery of the Lady Scaurus. So she won't settle for anything less? Both Julian and I can relate to that!

How appropriate that the history of Bravil is being highlighted in the TF. Natives of a town tend to be less interested in the history of the place they grew up in, than they are in those of new places. Things a native like Buffy would take for granted are noticeable to an outsider like Teresa. Though she isn't much of an outsider anymore, I would think.

I found Lady Scaurus intriguing on her jaunt to see a bear, and welcome this background on her with hope it means we will see more scenes of her with Teresa. There was a chemistry between the two that made me hope a friendship could develop between the two women.

The idea of a close friendship developing with Lady Scaurus was intriguing because Lady Scaurus doesn't mother or need mothering/doesn't lust or inspire Teresa's lust - the friendship wouldn't have a basis in needs, but in an equality and likeness of spirit and soul between the two.

I have added this chapter to among my favorites, Teresa is just beginning to come into her own, losing some of her skittishness and the beginnings of uncovering the shadows that haunt her - really Awesome write !!

I am growing amazingly fond of Aia. These past three installments are excellent. There's a fine line that exists between a good character and a good talking head, but you walk the distinction with grace. I can easily see how she knows all that she knows, without thinking that we're meeting some old dusty scholar or hermit that's spent her life collecting information but not truly living.

And getting her into the tournament was just a treat. Easiest way to sneak something is to march it beneath everybody's nose.

'Teresa who can't hit the broad side of a barn' would be, or 'Teresa of the corpse-white skin', or 'Teresa of the dyed hair'.
Must resist urge. Difficult. Extremely. Strong. Temptation.

Publius Horatius Cocles, right? Still, I could more believe that the man died in the act as you describe, rather than the arguably conflated legend of Ancient Rome. I remember first reading it and thinking "This can't possibly be an actual event."

Still, stranger things have happened...
