biggrin.gif Most of the settlements aren't built up outside of the essentials. Only one or two have uniqueness to them so far. I'm waiting until the Castle is linked to the rest of them (because it is so isolated, I didn't want a huge supply line [more dangerous to the provisioner]). Just need to get Nordhagen Beach allied before I really start getting crazy with the settlements!

Yeah, it gets a bit hectic when you start getting a lot of them. Especially if you want to recruit new settlers - you have to stop back on occasion to provide for anyone that showed up.
The attacks are also annoying, and based on a dice roll. If you don't show up to help it is something like a 51% chance for the settlement to defend itself. I got tired of that after a while and found a mod called BS Defence that changes the way attacks work. If you have more defense than food/water, you will win every time.

I may want to get that mod; because the last thing I want is to be in the middle of a dungeon and start getting notices that one of my Settlements is under attack and I have to drop everything I'm doing to run there and help out. That would ruin the game play for me; especially if all the work I put into defense only boiled down to a 51% chance for the Settlers.

The sky looks ominous and awesome in Sundown.

Hancock has a nose!

I love that little tea party!

There is a lot that goes into the way the game decides if a settlement gets attacked or not. A low defense rating definitely ups the chances, so does a high amount of food. What I do is put a wall around every settlement, plus 4 or 5 gun turrets around the only opening in it (you need a place for caravans to come in). I also use the console to arm all the settlers with the best guns I can get, usually combat rifles or assault rifles. Then when the raiders do come (or mutants, or whatever), they get a big surprise. To make this easier, I saved all my settlements defenses with Transfer Settlements. That way I can use it to automatically construct them with other characters.

I also use the console command coc to automatically teleport to the settlement being attacked. That gets me immediately there with no time passing in the game. Helpful if you are in Far Harbor or Nuka World when a Commonwealth settlement is attacked.
Kane
The only other issue you can get with walling settlements is that some settlements have enemy spawn points smack dab in the middle of them.

I haven't heard of Transfer Settlements before; is that a mod? I'll have to look it up.

I'll also have to make a list of the Settlements as I get them and keep it nearby. I know Sanctuary is coc Sanctuaryext; but that is the only one I know.

From what I heard, if you fast travel to the Settlements being attacked (it pulls the enemy into the spawn point inside the Settlement). Does using the coc command bypass that? That would be Awesome!

I was seriously considering putting the spawn point outside the North Bridge gate for Sanctuary; that would make me have to walk in (but keep the enemies outside of the walls, lol).

I definitely love the idea of giving them great guns and armor; and was planning to just stock the houses with the items thinking they would take whatever they needed. If you have to use the console to arm and armor them ... how do you do it? Is it like the

"player.additem"

command only using the base ID of each Settler instead of "player?"

And do they equip them or do you have to command them to equip them? (and if so; what is that console command?).

I was very excited about making the Settlements until I learned how long I had to be responsible for their survival/that it would be on a continuing basis throughout the remainder of the game. I mean, I was even excited that you would help everyone get on their feet; I expected that = but I thought that once everything was running smoothly = be able to move onto the next one; then maybe connect the two for sharing of supplies; etc. (and that it would be a nice friendly town you had a house at and could drop in on whenever you wanted). I just never realized how far Bethesda was going to carry the player's role out in this.

(which is why I've been hesitant to act on actually starting the settlement).

I really appreciate these tips; because I've kind of been in limbo with not moving forward on Sanctuary or the main quest line since I found out all this about how the Settlements actually work (vs how I thought they would, lol).

An easy solution might be to place a fast travel mat right on the bridge. If you have the DLC, its an option under resources, I think.

Yeah, or even when they don't the enemies get pulled in when the Player spawns in. I'm still trying to figure out how Carla and her brahman keep getting in = although I do want them in there; I am not trying to keep her out. But if she can get in with that big brahman, then I'm sure the enemies can, lol.

Transfer Settlements is a mod. It requires F4SE. Sadly both are things you have to update every time Bethesda puts out one of their stupid Creation Club patches, as the CC always breaks them. It allows you to create a blueprint of any settlement you have built up. You can import those into other character's games, to instantly recreate them. There are a ton of blueprints on the Nexus. But most are too grandiose for me.

I have only had trouble with raiders spawning inside the walls at Sanctuary. Some of them seem to spawn inside one of the houses in the back (the first one Codsworth takes you to when you go bug killing with him). Put a couple of turrets with a clear line of fire on the front door, and that is taken care of.

I tried putting a door in my settlement walls to let the traders in. But their Brahmin won't fit through them. So I just leave a single open space. Most settlements will have a burned out campfire somewhere. That is where the traders will stop and linger. So I try to put the entrance next to that. Then just concentrate your gun turrets there, as that is where the raiders will all eventually be funneled (as it is the only way they can attack the settlement).

I made a list of all the coc locations, like SanctuaryExt, and keep that on a paper by my PC. You can find the cell names on their respective pages on the The Wikia.

I think you can usually talk to the people in the settlements allied to you, and it will bring up an option to trade items with them. You can give them guns and ammo that way. They don't seem to equip any armor you give them. Fallout 3 and NV have gotten me in the habit of just using the console. Open it, click on the settler to select them, and type in

OpenActorContainer 1

That opens their inventory. You have to close the console to actually use it.

As soon as I get to Gun Nut at rank 4, every one of my settlers has either a combat rifle or assault rifle with all the best mods. You get xp for doing the work, and turn the settlements into awesome monster bashers. Most attacks on my settlements only last 5 or 10 seconds. Sometimes I never even have to fire a shot.

That wall is gorgeous! I haven't seen that texture yet; it is beautiful!

These tips are tremendous; thank you so much! And especially thank you for the links! That is a huge help!

On the brahman backpacks not fitting through doors = believe it or not, Carla's brahman didn't fit through that huge electric gate I put in at Sanctuary because it had to step up to get onto that wooden bridge and those darn packs on its back would hook onto the gate as high as it was! I finally had to put a wooden floor on the road leading up to the wooden bridge so the brahman didn't have to step up right there under the bridge. That fixed the issue.

I do like playing with the in-game editor; but really wish they had expanded it to the point we could pick up the trash out of the houses at least.

Thank you for all this help; you really have made me feel better about actually starting up the Sanctuary Settlement as soon as I get one or the other finished (either the in-game version or my mod I've been making).

SubRosa
I think I got that wall from Homemaker. It adds a lot of the vanilla assets to the stuff you can construct in settlements. Things that should have been constructable from the start. That includes the Covenant style concrete walls and turret platforms.

The Hermit Crab is alive. Well it was before it met Tsuruhime... It uses the van as a shell, since it is the only thing big enough.

mALX: The Vim powered armor is a standard T-51 with a special paintjob. It comes with the Far Harbor expansion. You find the armor with the paint job already on it in the Vim pop factory. It's a fictional soda pop company in Maine.

There are other companies with their own power armor paint schemes. There are ones for Abraxo and Sugar Bombs that I think are part of the vanilla game (though maybe it is from Automatron?). And there is a Nuka Cola power armor in the Nuka World dlc.

I kind of wish I knew what was going on in the Bigger Boat pic as well. Tsuruhime came across that boat with the burning oil in the water around it. There never was any explanation of how it came to be that way. But it sure looks cool!

I don't think there are many garden gnomes in the vanilla game. But I could be wrong. There are a lot of them in Far Harbor.

mALX: If you take every suit of power armor you come across, you will need multiple warehouses to store them all in. At one point I deliberately put a suit of armor in every settlement. I was hoping that if there was an attack, one of the settlers would get in and use it. I had read that they would. But they never did. At least not for me.

I think that was supposed to be a whale skeleton that Tsuru was standing beside. You see many of them in Far Harbor.

Tsuru's pic in the room with the clean counters was in the bar in Far Harbor. I forget the name. It is on the dock where you first arrive. It is the only place you can rent a room to sleep.

That is a movie playing on the screen. There are two movies in fact. One is that western, the other is a Creature From the Black Lagoon knock-off. There is a mod that makes them show in the Starlight Cinema in Commonwealth.

I left that teddy bear with his hat and boat. I always leave them when they are placed really brilliantly. The world looks better that way.

mALX: If you take every suit of power armor you come across, you will need multiple warehouses to store them all in.

Kane: I thought Admiral Teddy was really creative. Speaking of which Teddy Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy twice.

Speaking of Admirals, I visited with Persephone for a bit

Guns

Don't shoot 'till you see the whites of her eyes

Lobster Bisque

Fat Man

Little Boy

Eyes on the horizon

The cemetery pride

Persephone! The "Whites of her eyes" shot is freaky!!!

Ooh, a Fat Man! I haven't found one of those yet! (or a mini-nuke either, unless I have it in the bomb shelter = haven't been there in a while).

The Cemetary pride = are those cats coming up out of the graves? I've got to know more about that screen! laugh.gif

Awesome shots, and really good to see Persephone again!

** I really think that is cool to leave the Easter Egg Teddy Bears where they are! I learned to do that in Fallout 3; the Easter Eggs they set up are never the same if you take them away from their original setup. The miniture alcohol bottles and gnomes on the chessboard grow to normal size the second you take them; and that Teddy with the stockings and naughty nightie = if you take it, all you have when you get home is a plain Teddy Bear and plain nightie; so the whole thing is ruined. I had to reload previous saves to put them back and from that point on = Easter Eggs stayed where they were found.

What happened in that lobster pic to cause fire? Or is it always alight in that one spot?

Whoa, Persephone using a fat man!

Looks like she could be returning home in that final pic. Ramada Inn for undead. blink.gif

YYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOO!

YO. YO.

People, listen up. I keep finding stuff and hearing bits of dialogue I never had before. And this was particularly awesome to me.

So I have been really delving into settlements the past few weeks. However--and this is more important for this particular post--I also decided to use a lot more melee in my combat encounters in the past week or so. I had been using so much ammo and I have barely put melee to use, so I was like, hey, I'm going to start doing it much more now. Encountered some easy raider prey who, as usual, thought they could take me on. So I'm smacking this one around and realized I could ALT for a power swing. So I did it for a kill swing with my Irradiated Shiskebab (since renamed) that you get from the quest for Abraham Finch.

AND MARIAH GRABBED THE RAIDER AND SLIT HIS DAMN THROAT. STONE COLD.

I was taken aback. Since I rarely used melee, I hadn't seen what it could really do. Now I'm doing martial arts and just flipping them and knocking them to the ground. Was that a perk I picked up that I forgot about?

But wait, it gets better. Sometime along the way I'm on The Island, mostly to start building up some settlements but also to clear some enemy areas. Lo and behold, as I'm wrecking some Mirelurks, one of the Killclaw variants had a Bloodied Disciples Cutlass (also just renamed today or yesterday). It's way faster than my previous sword, does more base damage, AND does more damage the lower your health is. Glee has just overcome me.

It has become more viable in a bunch of battles (sometimes even more so than with guns) to just charge at enemies and slice and dice. I've even been doing it to enemies like Super Mutant Warlords and Primuses! AAAAAHHHHHH, SO GOOD. And then several enemies Mariah turned around, put in a chokehold, and then rammed that blade into their chests! Including a Gunner Captain right through his armor! Mariah is a certified [censored] (not sure if the whole word is allowed on the forums, so I'll censor it, but it is abbreviated by "BA")!

I might be having too much fun. Just wait until I beef up melee damage more through perks.

Also, as I briefly mentioned a couple times, I've been renaming weapons. Can't remember all of their new or original names or their attributes, so I'll list them later. I also need to go to bed so I can't look them up now. But I just had to say all this because AAAAAAAHHHHHH, SO GOOD.

If anybody else has been renaming weapons, I want to see what yours are too! I don't know if that would be best for here or in a different thread though.

Wow, this sounds AWESOME !!!! How did you learn about the "Alt" to do a Power Swing? I want to try this out; but wouldn't know which keys to use for melee combat! This is really exciting !!!

I can't remember. I either just tried it out because ALT with a gun makes you hit an enemy with the butt of the gun or meant to hold it in to throw a grenade but accidentally hit it too quickly. But yeah, it's awesome! It's hard to find both a fast and really powerful weapon. It's kind of hilarious to charge an enemy unloading a clip into you and smack them around.

Also, don't forget that clicking the right mouse button blocks an incoming attack, but you can't hold it like in Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim. So it's about timing the block. It can take a bit to get used to.

Ooh, I hit some key by accident in combat once and did bash someone with the butt of the gun once! Just could never figure out which key I hit, I was in a panic = dying to a swarm of bugs, lol. (did die).

Thank you for the tip!!!

Awesome, thank you for the tip!!!

mALX: The glowing eyes really make Persephone work.

There is a Fat Man in the old auto scrapyard north east of Sanctuary, with the Sentry Robot you can activate. Just search on top of the old car wrecks.

The cats are not coming out of the graves. They are just cats. You can build cages to catch animals. I typically make them to get cats. Each one gives a bonus to settlement happiness.

Renee: I am not sure about the fire in the Mirelurk Hunter pic (the giant lobster). I think I probably hit it with a molotov cocktail before going into melee.

Every graveyard is a Ramada Inn... laugh.gif

Tsuruhime goes on a trip

Riding the monorail

Welcome to Nuka World!

The friendly natives will entertain her

Did I mention that her sword's name is Karasu (Japanese for Crow)

Nuka Bot

The Shape of Water

Tsuruhime has a new outfit

Its Nuka-Tastic

Slicing and dicing

Rader: Most of the time I rename my character's armor and weapons, but not with anything original. I just change it to Hecate's Rifle, Hecate's Right Shoulder, etc... That way they are all sorted together in the inventory.

But sometimes I do create unique names for their weapons. For example, Tsuruhime's katana is Karasu, Japanese for 'Crow'. Persephone's sword is Malediction of course (it is across all the games she is in). Oda Hidetaka's katana is Takizakura ('Waterfall of Cherry Blossoms' in Japanese). Tomoe Gozen's sword was Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi 'Grass-Cutting Sword'.
mALX

Oh man, do you have to have a mod to add the cats in or are they already in the game? I want to fill Sanctuary with cats! laugh.gif

** Ooh, thank you for the tip on getting a Fat Man! I def plan to get in game and find that place!

Seriously, that screenshot with the cats in the graveyard needs to come out more often; that is one of the best top 10 screens of a lifetime!

What it looks like is that the dead's souls are escaping their graves in the form of cats and all of them moving toward something and the camera just caught the action! You could make a horror movie out of that and sell it to Hollywood! AWESOME AWESOME shot!

Oh, does that Monorail actually work? How did she reach it?

Oh it does work!!! Oh no, urgh = Nuka World! Uh oh.

Bwaahaa! Something tells me that greeting wasn't friendly...

And there is her sword! (with his blood on it, rollinglaugh.gif ) I absolutely LOVE that black jacket she is wearing! What is that?

(And I would have thought Japanese for Crow would be Mirocu!)

The Nuka Bot is hilarious! With those big hands it looks like Mickey Mouse on a bad LSD trip or something!!! rollinglaugh.gif

Urgh, what is that? GAAAAAAH!

Wait, did she kill hat Nuka Bot? It looks kind of dead in this shot...but can't tell, it might be waving? LOVE the Nuka Cola Power Armor!!!! Does it have any special stats?

Nuka-tastic; but huge on her!

Ooh, are there Nukalurks? And if so = does their meat have the same Awesome stats they had in FO3?

Awesome shots! I am interested in seeing her trip through Nuka World! Even with the Power Armor as a temptation; it will be a while before I attempt it, lol.

** You know, I've been renaming Misa's weapons stuff that doesn't tell what it is; which is really dumb now that I think about it, lol. I am taking what you said to Radar as advice for my game; that is really a great idea how you name them!

Also; your idea of using her name in front so all her items stack together = really smart idea! That would also keep me from accidentally chopping up something I've worked hard to improve. (it hasn't happened yet; but has come close once).

Ooh, those are cool names. Unfortunately, I don't know any really cool foreign language words that would work. The Malediction one is awesomely menacing. I think a separate thread will be better for talk about unique names for weapons/armor.

More new screenshots of mine to come soon!

After I read what the perk did, I smiled like Doomguy.

mALX: You don't need a mod for the cats. You can create them in your settlements. Go to the Cages section, under small cages are the cat cages. Build one or more and hook it up to power. You have to leave the settlement and come back later to see if you caught a cat.

The monorail does not really work. It is a recorded video, like the intro to Dragonborn, when you go to Solsthiem on the ship.

Tsuruhime wears the Sirius Armor, plus a light Combat Armor chest piece. The latter is painted black thanks to Endor's Custom Combat Armor.

The Nuka Bot is fun. It is the park mascot at Nuka World. Tsuru didn't kill it. It actually gives you a quest.

The Nukalurks do drop Nuka Meat. It is basically the same as the standard Mirelurk meat, just with a better buff.
