While I firmly believe that passion should drive you in what you chose to write, I'd hazard a guess that there's more of a ready-made TES fanbase here on this TES forum than for any other genre? Just my two septims.

I'll suggest a compromise: Stay with TES, because you're here, but write a story set in the time the Dwemer were around, i.e. Elder Scrolls "Steampunk".

The raw power comes from Magic instead of Steam, but it's the same principle. Elaborate mechanisms rule, and there's a "historical" setting, relative to the writer's world. Narrate your story from the present day in Tamriel.

Edit: Definitely open to a Dwemer story though.

Pick a time for the author to live in, and throw in a few "unlike today" observations.

Why not just Dwemer? Or are you suggesting a godlike narrarator who knows everything? Cuz telling a story from a history book/legend seems weird.

How about an Elder Scroll story set in Modern Times? That hasn't been done here before I think.

And maybe you could even do a compromise between 40K and TES; the setting would be Tamriel, but the scenario would 40K's with nations battling each other. Dominion Battlesuits, Cyrodiliic Astartes, Khornate Nords, etc etc.
