So all of a sudden Bethesda decides to release Daggerfall for free., just like they did with Arena five years ago. Grab it and see what the fuzz is all about. I know I will (soon as their server isn't overloaded by the plethora of users downloading it right now). It runs in DOSBox and there's a walkthrough for how to set it up for whoever needs it. (or if you can wait a bit longer there's of course DaggerXL in the works)

Edit: Here's a FileShack mirror for the download.

Seeing as I've never played Arena or Daggerfall, I'm going to download it. One question though. Is Arena still a free download on Bethesda's site?

Well dang, talk about awesome. I guess I'll download this baby myself, though like Rane I'm going to wait first. Besides, I've got school to worry about.

Yup.

I'm going to have to see what they did to get the file size to 148MB as they listed... I think 188 was the smallest I managed to compress the game to with my own tools. Until I check, I still have wonders if it's a modified version. tongue.gif

For those who have the computer skills (and the hard drive space), I recommend creating a DOS 6.22 partition on a hard drive and installing Daggerfall there. You will also need Mo'Slo to bring current processors down to a speed the game can handle. I have done this and am able to run DF without the problem of invisible quest items.

Of course, the other DF bugs are still there, but it's worth it.

I personally use Dosbox and followed Bethesda's guide to set it up for the most part. I say for the most part, because I still had to get around the cd-check and then set it up so that dosbox starts up daggerfall automatically. (I'm too lazy to type in two commands that take less than five seconds to enter.)

It's not the perfect game, but I'm having a lot of fun. Not to mention that it runs really smooth on my Oblivion-capable laptop. Although, my character is a rather crazy build. +30 hp each level?! Downsides, luck and personality are about as low as they can go so nobody wants to talk to me. laugh.gif

So far, the only bug I've encountered is a constant looping of the horse/cart sounds, even when I get back on foot. It's no big deal, and going indoors or fast-travelling get's rid of it.

Lol.

I'd download it if my hard drive wasn't going out.

Well I have the game, I think my mom bought it of off ebay or something a couple of years ago. We have an old windows 95 I'm able to play it on. Besides the controls being ridiculously hard most of the environment seems to be generated. I have no idea have to do ANYTHING in the game. I picked up a quest and it told me to go to a cave. Thing is though, DF is really big and there are no map markers. To me, the game is pointless.

Ah yeah, that's a big annoyance. There are markers (you have to zoom in on the province first), but they are tiny as hell, colours of dungeons, temples, villages are hard to tell apart and there are plain too many of them. You only get to see what the marker stands for if you hover your mouse over it. (easier said than done cause they're so tiny.) If you actually want to find something, you have to use the find button (once zoomed in) and type in the name of your location without making typos.

And after all that, you've only arrived at the entrance to the random maze from hell. Good luck trying to find your way once inside.

The bigness is one of the main things used to sell the game, but it really makes travelling on foot ala Morrowind/Oblivion impossible. I'll be honest and say that in my opinion, try the game if you want to see the earlier parts of the series or for nostalgia. Dumbed-down or not, Oblivion and Morrowind are much better games for actual playing.

I had it downloaded, but I got rid of it on my mom's labtop, because it was causing her processor to cause too much heat. ((Am I a geek for knowing the solution to fixing my mom's computer?)) Not the game, but DOSbox, because it's a disk operating system emulator.
