What do you think about the claims of the Mayan Calender predicting that there is an impending doomsday on Dec.21st 2012. Personally I think it's all just a bunch of non-sense just like Y2K was, but I am just wondering about other opinions and what not.
gothdayks3
my friends said that like a month ago. but i think its just a load of crap. kvright.gif kvleft.gif dry.gif

All of these calenders depicting the end of the world are nonsense. It contradicts religions and beliefs as well. Okay, the Mayans think the world is going to end in 2012......so what? What are the Christians, Catholics, Arabics, etc, etc supposed to believe? Obviously that is not their religion, so they're not going to believe.

It'll happen when it happens...or not.
Steve
I read somewhere it is just the end of one of their astronomical cycles and that they really didn't predict the end of the world. That makes more sense to me!
stargelman
There aren't any more Mayans. What does that tell you?

Obviously they foresaw the fiasco that London 2012 would be. Ye gods Boris, you being British was a thing to be proud of until you made that daft 'whiff-whaff' speech and dropped the Olympic torch.

And I think it is just the end of their astronomical cycle, as Steve said.
Lord Revan

I am under the impression that is isn't literally a doomsday. It's supposed to be that the end of an age and the beginning of another. As for the Christian prospective on Armageddon, Jesus instructed us not to attempt to estimate when it would occur anyway (not that many people seem to listen).

I think the 2012 thing is a load of gobshite. The end of the world will happen when it happens. Whether it's tomorrow, five years from now, five billion years from now when the sun explodes, or the second I'm done making this post, there's nothing I can really do about it. It's a lot like dying - don't be afraid of it and you'll turn out fine. The best way to "prepare" for it is simply to live your life as virtuously as possible.

Or just go completely off the wall and party constantly-either's cool biggrin.gif

In all honesty, the Jhovah's witnesses thought the world would end some time in the eighties apparently. That still hasn't happened, and the eighty were twenty years ago. The point is that however much you can analyse and interpret old writings, it'll just happen when it happens (next saturday, just after tea-time, to be precise biggrin.gif ). The plus side is that we'll either all be dead or completely incinerated instantaneously by a massive burst of radiation from the sun or something like that.

My personal theory is that it's gonna be zombies. Lots and lots of zombies...
Cardboard Box
The world will end on July 5, 7am.

Either that or everyone will more or less remember what a great party it was and the apocalypse will be postponed for another year. tongue.gif

The people that say that the world will end on December 21/23 2012 are just spitting out the bull. 2012 was not predicted to be the end of the world by the Mayans. It was predicted to be the start of a new bak'tun (AD, BC). The reason people think the world will end is because 13 is an unlucky number, and the bak'tun starts so close to 2013.

tl;dr
world will not end in 2012
Petra Arkanian
I agree with everyone who has said the 2012 thing is a load of crap.

Personally, I believe that the mayans figured that if they even lived that long, they'd just make another calendar! This is just the 2000 thing all over again! A message from the sky coulda appeared 1 hour ago, saying the world will end in the 1400s! And then when we saw it, what would we have done, run around screamin our heads off cuz the end of the world happened 600 years ago? I think not.

Also, it's quite possible that whatever evidence that the people cooked up is false, they coulda just been hoping for this reaction,(or rather, the one that we on this forum aren't having) so that all the bazionares buy into their life boat things! Seriously!
Petra Arkanian
..... or maybe the whole 2012 thing is totally real. In that case, I'd better pack up my teddy bear and hide under the bed*snort* with some rations!

ROLF.... Petra Arkanian has just laughed herself to death. This is a sign from above:

Technically, the Mayan Calendar is not the only one that predicted that date.

It was always known the Bible was written with a mathematical basis, it has drawn the interest of scientists and mathematicians whether they believe in its premise or not. It has a fractal precision that scientists believed could be decoded to predict future events.

In the process of decoding it, they found that it actually did predict every major disaster to the date - along with some that (other countries than America) would consider minor (like the assassination of President Kennedy, etc.).

When they confirmed their decoding was accurate, they used the same formula to look into the future, and came up with the same date for the end of the world as the Mayan Calendar had. (Coincidence?)

The predictions that show the end times are near - these are coming true daily - not just the wars, but the changes in weather patterns, the shifting of the Earth's plates that are causing natural disasters like these massive tsunamis - melting of places in the south pole show there are underground volcanoes erupting.

Does that mean the earth may one day self destruct? Maybe the 'Big Bang' theory that scientists believe brought our universe about was accurate, maybe not - but things happen in cycles, history always repeats itself - is that where our planet is headed?

The stability of life on a planet is based on a precise tilt of the axis, precise timing of revolutions and orbit - any change could bring us closer to the sun or further away. Closer would melt the polar caps, flooding areas we live in - or just plain cooking us. Further away and we would freeze.

So are we facing global destruction? Most likely, yes...the question is when. I don't believe we will see it in our lifetimes - but one can't ignore the fact that other planets as big as ours have self destructed, pieces of them have fallen to our Earth and created huge, massive craters that we (for a century at least) have visited as National Sites, one is over 100 miles in diameter.

We can't ignore the possibilities, nor live in fear of the end - but we should take care of this Earth and be aware of changes that could be detrimental, learn from the past of these other planets that have exploded to protect the future of our own planet. It is not a matter of just not wasting the natural resources anymore, but keeping a vigil over the planet itself to ensure it is here to enjoy.
Shadowgale
PAH! Scientists! What do they know?

I agree about the taking-care-of-the-planet stuff, but not with anything else, really.

If this is true, then I AM ANGRY. That means I won't be able to do like, ANYTHING. If the End Of The World is gonna happen in 2012, I wonder what it's gonna be like... Not that I want to know, of course. Maybe It'll be like that movie. Yeah, I know, points off for comparing the real world to a movie, but still.
The Vyper
I've heard "End of the World" prediction repeatedly throughout my life. One of them said the world would end at 2:15 PM on October...something... 1992. Another said the end would come in 1998. I even heard one state that it would happen some time in 1987. Yet here we are at the end of 2010 and the world is still spinning. Will the world end in 2012? I doubt it. Will it end at some point? All things of this universe do.
RagingMudcrab
If the world ends, it better be due to a zombie apocalypse. Anything else just isn't worth it.
saqin
Wasn't it someone that said that the world would end year 1500? Then how come we're here? tongue.gif Yeah, I don't believe it. As several people already have stated, I think we should accept that the world will end when it ends. If that is in 2012, 1 billion years from now when the earth is no longer habitable, or 3-5 billion years from now when/if the Andromeda galaxy and the milky way collides, that remains to be seen. I mean, seriously, it's not as if though we could do anything to stop it. wink.gif

Sure, it's going to be totally annoying if the world ends in december 2012, since that means I've got a little less than a month until I'm 18 and I haven't had time to do anything with my life, but as I said, there isn't much to do about that.

The way I see it, the world will end a long time from now, when Japan somehow bombs most of the countries, and China and Russia join forces with Japan. Then Japan will break the truce and bomb Hong Kong, with it's convinient harbors, and Russia will finally catch on and will attempt to defeat Japan, but by that time, it'll be too late, cuz Japan will have stolen China's army, and they will crush Russia and China, and then the rest of the world (besides Australia, which decided that they'll rule the world once everyone's in smoking ruins) will beat Japan to the ground, and then bombs Australia, and then everyone dies of intense radiation.

The end.

Hmm, stories like that give me warm fuzzies.... *SNORT*

Sounds like someone has been watching too much "End of the World" flashes. tongue.gif

I always laugh a little when I hear people discussing the end of the world, because simply put the world could end at any time. Theres a whole list of cataclysmic events that could occur and we have no control over most of them. But as for putting a date on it, and a date using a calendar thats millenia old? That's a little ridiculous, as is using coding from ancient books that are meant to have a meaning.

The simple fact is the human brain dislikes disorder, and so tries to make order out of nothingness. If you take Carl Jung's theories on Archetypes that's why many religions have similar ideals, like the sun being a symbol for god. It's also the reason why people see Christ in toast and faces on the moon. So of course someone who's looking for a pattern in a book as long as the bible will find one, it's sheer probabilty that at some point the numbers will line up.

And in any case. What chu gonna do?

To the end of the world? Probably nuclear apocalypse. Am I afraid? Nope. If we die, we die. Can I fight it? Tooth and nail. Will I fight it? Oh yes.

If 2012 really happens...I'll die with my friends, we'll have a ton of fun on December 21st, 2012 (Also Yule!). We're going to throw a party and on December 22nd, 2012, we're going to walk outside at 12:00 AM and scream to the whole world, "FAIL!"

I'll join in in that battlecry. Reverse phsycology tends to work more often than not. biggrin.gif
