Well, I think you already know that Guild Wars is free. Let's see, if you like pure PVP Shadowbane is now free. I think Anarchy Online will still let you set up a one year free account. That's a pretty engrossing game. If I think of any others I add them later.

Conquer Online
Thang (although it felt a lot like Diablo 2 to me so I just played that instead)
Planeshift (still being developed and I've no idea what the current version is like, but since its a game in development don't expect too much. Half the character skins weren't even done when I last played it.
Rubies of Eventide (no idea what it is like since my old uni internet connection threw a hissy fit when I tried to connect to the game and I have'nt tried it since)

Anyone know of a good MMORPG, one where you don't end up just hacking and slashing for hours on end waiting for your next level up or enough money to get the next cool items?
Ibis
Aug 8 2006, 08:22 PM
Doomed there's a new one coming out called Titans Quest, if you liked the above angle view of Diablo - you might really like this game. It's storyline was written by Randall Wallace, son of William Wallace and he is also the guy who penned the story of Braveheart. They say his excellent plotlines won't be as evident as they would be in a single player like Oblivion but that is only because of the neccessary openness of MMORPGs.
Titan Quest is supposed to have good loot and weaponry, a very good character development process and is based first in ancient Greece (complete with the mythical monsters) and then go to Egypt and then Asia. Pretty new lands for an MMORPG.
You should see a picture of the Gorgons - sexy female snake women. Very well done. It looks really good.
Cain almost bought it but put it back because he doesn't like the above view angle like Diablo where you can't look around. (Oh did I mention this is a Blizzard game? ... but light years beyond Dialbo graphics) So anyways, Cain put it back and said the money could go towards getting me a new video card instead so I can play Oblivion properly ... isn't he sweet???

See what you guys are mentioning is stuff I've tried or stuff that's like the stuff I tried, Kinght Online is okay if you like spending 3 hours pressing like 3 or 4 buttons until you have enough money to get your next thing or you level, it just gets old so fast. Titans quest sound like it might be an exceotion to this, but if you haven't played it you can't say for sure right?

What do you mean that Guild Wars isn't free? You have to buy it in a store to begin with. Or online maybe. But after that it has no monthly playing fee of any kind that I know of and it actually started the new trend by the other games ... including the Baronney of Shadowbane ... to offer their games online for no monthly fee in various ways.
No Doom, we don't have Titans Quest. Came very close. He might still get it later if the mood so strikes and the price has gone down. But looking at the screenshots in PC gamer in the 'reading room' I must say the graphics look spectacular and the mobs are to die for. I'd like to see it in action. But they all show the overhead view and firstperson/thirdperson games really spoil you when you can't look around in others.

Air is free, unless you really need it at a hospital and then it's bottled and killer expensive.
You tell me of one DECENT Interesting MMORPG that is totally FREE. Why would anyone even bother to make one if their not going to profit in any way? The closest to free that we found were:
Red Moon - a Korean MMORPG that you downloaded for free but did cost $9.95 a month to play. It was pretty much fun, had a Dialbo type overhead view and something like 2000 levels for players to aspire to achieve. But it's gone South to South America. Can't get it here anymore.
And there is one that you can download for free called BioWar and come to think of it - it was free. Or at least it was a free month's demo I think. We were playing it online with another couple from Kentucky who frequent Korana's Korner website but we didn't pursue it after the free first month demo. It also had an overhead view and was kinda fun.
Only two I can think of that didn't majorly suck.

Yeh, Shadowbane is pretty weird sometimes. Some guilds are active, some not. Some will be very active for awhile and then just give it up, sell their city to someone else and disappear. Or join a new guild. Some people even PVP within their own guild. Of course, that doesn't last long.
Shadowbane does have large posted Bane battles .. trebuckets and stuff. But the guilds who receive the bane don't usually recruit once the bane starts. Blood Clan is a good guild to join in Shadowbane because they are large and so get baned alot. Talk to Harl Krave in Blood Clan and ask to join. It's a good way to level up fast. Although their equipment offers aren't that great since they are so big.
First character to roll is a Minotaur axe-weilder Barbarian - 2 handed axe - you'll be pretty well accepted as a fighter. Ask alot about your class. Be a nube. Let people in your new guild help you. If your interested Cain can pm you a Template for making a good starter character.
My hubby Cain asks what server are you on? He could show you some things to do past level 10 if you are on any of the servers he plays. Mourning & Vindication are the ones he plays. He says you can hang with him on Vindication anytime if you are Templar, Priest, Scout, Confessor.
On Mourning he has a 73 Nephlum Warlock "Silmane" who can power level you. If your computer can handle it you should run 2 accounts & tab between them with one your main character & the other a buffing/healing type char for your main.
================
I remember that Anarchy Online was having huge Alien Invasions which were certainly GIGANTIC battles to try to save whatever city was being attacked. They run a free year trial account. But I'm not sure but I think you have to be pretty high level to cause any damage to those aliens.

Erm, there
is a certain Ogame-styled browser-MMORPG that's free in basic variant (has some time restrictions during every day, but that's nothing too serious). It's called BiteWars and it's, essentially, a PvP battling between Vampires and Werewolves (yea, they coulnd't get Pirates n Ninjas, sadly

). If you 're interested,
check it out.
p.s.: That last link, down in my signature ? DON'T click it if you don't wan't to be Bitten

Sooo ... are the vampires attractive in this game? What about the werewolves? I never did get to play a vampire or werewolf in Morrowind and I absolutely refuse to get that ugly as an Oblivion vampire reverts to. It just goes against lore. I did used to play an online single player vampire game. I'd rather play a MMORPG really.

The whole problem with interesting, gripping storeyline and MMORPGs is that they cannot really setup a hard story the way MW/Obliv do for one player because they are going to have 1000's of players interacting with each other and that is the story or happening. They can only set up the guide lines.

Way I see it, the only reason to level is to play the game with your friends. Reason why I've been gone is that I've been playing Maplestory with a bunch of awesome friends on there

. I dont even care about levelling, Im the same level as them and it's pointless to become stronger.

Ahhh, okay ... server 4, good to know. Although you guys may tire of it before I ever get there. I just reupped my Shadowbane account.
Hunter14 here got my hubby Cain to have a renewed interest in SB and he's been playing it like a madman for days. He's in a great guild city near some really good runedrop points. So, now I've decided to join too.
I'm in the process of rerolling most of my characters now. The only one I'll be keeping is a Centaur Druid healer named Gwenne Genver ... my rerolls will be a half-giant barbarian named Thundara who is an axe-wielder and has the ring of the babosh as her wedding gift from Ogrik her husband. And I have a vampire named Natashya who first didn't do well as a sorceress so I remade her as a scout and she didn't get the track rune - what a rip!! Just cause she's a vamp. So now I'll try her as a thief or an assassin perhaps.
Anyone have a good idea of the best Class to make vampires in Shadowbane? If so please tell me because I like the race.
Hunter14, if you want to play with us and level up your chars, pm me K?

I would love to Milanius, but I've got a big muddle going on with my Morrowind mods now that is driving me crazy! I loaded in an old amulet I'd made long ago from an archive disk (well 3 of them really) and now everthing is fugging up. I think that maybe the amulets of long ago were from a mod with a virus. I'm running everything through hotmail right now just trying to find the offending mesh or texture...because hotmail has the strictest virus protection and finds things even my Norton passes.

Urban Dead, man.
On there I'm an established runner of at least 12 high level characters. I'm the head of a cult of PK'ers, and anybody who plays is free to join me. Pker's aren't looked at too highly though.. especially my group The Disciples of Zeko. We're infamous for PKing the largest amount of people at one time in game history (our group founder and god RedZeko was responsible).

I played
Urban Dead for a while but its annoying because when you get turned into a zombie its hard to get people to revive you, so you gotta spend all your turns getting shot by someone even though you don't attack them first because you hope they'll help you...its just annoying. The updates and new skills further unbalance the game and make it very difficult for new players to just pick up, so unless you're a hardcore web based RPG fanatic, I'd give this one a miss.
Then there's
Londinium which is full of skills, quests, and items as well as PvP duels to see how you rank among other players. Even though it is somewhat interesting it is ultimately shallow gameplay and relatively boring...oddly I still play regularly though.
Of course who hasn't heard of
Runescape, the free 3D RPG that runs on Java and has no downloads. I personally love this game, it looks much better than it used to since the plethora of graphic updates it has been through and there are plenty of things to do even in the free version of the game. You can fight, cook, mine ores, forge weapons/armor, and many other things as well so if you like mmorpgs and don't have much time, cash, or you're at school messing around on the computer when you're supposed to be working (you know who you are.) you might find this game interesting.
And finally there's my personal favorite,
Cybernations. Really all there is to it is creating and managing a nation, yet somehow it pulled me in. Its not entirely interesting unless you join an alliance, a forum, and build some good trade relations between your neighbors. Joining and alliance gives you the advantage of protection from other nations that might be looking at you like a cash cow if you're a rogue nation and also the fact that many alliances have programs designed to help smaller nations get off to a good start by giving them money or resources as well as tips on how to play.
There were several other games I used to play, one was a game where you built and army, joined a battalion and fought all over the world, I can't remember the name of it though. I was introduced to it by Channler, Soulseeker, Megil, and Shogunsniper...man its been a while.
Anyways thats my list of games I'm currently playing, what I'm wondering is are there any other browser based RPG fans around the forums? If so, what games do you play?

I personally still play a third-party server for
Ultima Online. I don't think MMOs have gotten any better in the some 11 years since UO's first commercial release. Too quickly people looked at
EverQuest, and realized you didn't need UO's stupifyingly exhaustive level of detail and thought; just get decent art, use tons of grind as filler, and then throw in the multiplayer/social aspect as a crutch. Charge people $10-15US a month, and pow, instant millions.
Plus, to me, the idea of instancing is just lame; it's a sign that the developers are too lazy/unwilling to put forth the effort and resources to actually make enough/large enough dungeons for everyone. Or too lazy and uninspired to make dungeons suitable for a wide range of levels, such as ones that AREN'T largely one-dimensional. Or serve little purpose for going by the time you're high enough a level to solo them. Or ones that don't necessarily require setting aside the next couple hours to do them or not touch them at all.

Yea, my entire family plays World of Warcraft, and it's soo annoying. All they talk about are the instances. Personally, I don't get it. I mean, all that really happens is you go in, kill a bunch of stuff, and get yelled at part of the time for not doing it correctly, especially in the bigger party ones. (Sadly, since they play all the time, I understand a lot about the game.)
Nottheking
Jul 4 2009, 03:38 AM
Part of my problem with Instances/Raids is that, for almost all intents and purposes, they're linear. In some cases, a quest might send you down a slightly different path through it, but you still can't go back and do that before leaving. Of course, designing them all around having a 5-person party going through them helps ensure that no one will try doing things differently, for fear of retribution from the rest of the party.
Likewise, I also enjoy how UO has a flatter leveling slope, actually involves a degree of player skill, and has a much faster-paced play; DPS is largely a useless statistic in the game in light of simply considering one's ability to stay alive. Likewise, virtually every dungeon retains at least some use to players even at endgame levels; there's a POINT to soloing things, and it's not impossible, as the game's PvE isn't entirely the same pattern of tank/nuke/heal roles; with some player skill, characters can actually stand on their own two feet.
This ability to go it alone is especially important in a game where there are no pre-defined classes, where you've got an Elder Scrolls-esque system of skill selection and gain that has some 43 skills, and far more possible combinations. Hence, there's a lot of creativity involved, rather than seeking out a pre-defined line to follow.

Well, it WAS the first true MMORPG. (games like
Meridian 59 were not massive, even if they had subscription fees; M59 was actually smaller in player capacity than NWN) Origin didn't really know the genre well, since it outright didn't exist. So they tried far harder than they had to. It wasn't until some time later everyone realized it was an easy cash cow that'd slipped right beneath their noses the whole time.
The server I play on is free. It's called UODemise, and is the closest mirror of the official servers. You can take a look at how to get onto it
here; EA allows people to download the client for free. And yes, I'm on those forums under the exact same name.
