I don't know if it's a good idea to bring this up, but here it is. Should I play Morrowind before I play Oblivion ?
I have already started Oblivion but havn't gotten too far yet. I had not played any Elder Scroll game before, so I was wondering if I would be better off playing Morrowind to get a feel of the history or story lines before I got into Oblivion. I have read so many posts by people that have played previous Elder Scroll games and it seems that they have such a good grasp of the game before they start on Oblivion. I know this is all subject to personal opinion but I would like to hear what you experienced Elder Scroll players think. What say ya ?

not necessary. When you want to get really deep down into the world of the elder scrolls, then you should play all the games of the series. But you don't need to have played morrowind to understand story/the world of oblivion.

Well, if you play Morrowind you might understand some of the things they talk to each other about, like 'I heard the tribunal is collapsing blahblahblah'.

The storyes are not conected.
But i strongly advise playing Morrowind because it's such a good game...Better that Oblivion IMO.The graphics can be a litte out-dated,but there are some really good texture packs that can make the game feeling much better.Ultimate Texture packs are really good for example.

Morrowind has more quests, guilds, fantasy, its superior in so many ways.
Absence of voice-acting can be a problem though.Sometimes you can get the feeling you are in a ''dead'' world where nothing happens,if you don't trigger it.The game can be frustrating sometimes, but the next time you turn on the game it becomes intresting.I got that feeling from probably playing too much.

Oh yeah.and get the expansions.I'm sure you won't be disapointed.....Both Trubunal and Bloodmoon are even more intresting than the original game (IMO).

Mournhold! City of Light! City of Magic!
And you will be absolutly charmed with Solstheim (Bloodmoon).Nord villages are charming,East Empire Company quests, and offcourse the Bloodmoon Main Quest. You can become a werewolf i it. biggrin.gif

So i say go for it!
Playing Morrowind never hurt anybody!

Morrowinds music was way better than Obivions (IMO) because Oblivions main theme-songs climax only lasts for about a few seconds and then it gets boring again, but Morrowinds main theme song was very nice and awesome smile.gif

Yeah, I sure do recommend playing Morrowind before Oblivion, it has so much lore and such, that probably gives a nice start for your Oblivion playing. But beware though, this is also a highly addicting game and takes time to play through.
It's quite cool, when you get the feeling that you have traveled to another country in Tamriel, from Morrowind to Cyrodiil. At least I get that feeling :)

I don't know. MW definitely gives you a better understanding of the game mechanics in oblivion but not knowing all the tricks can be quite fun. Though I think if I was to play MW after OB without having played MW before I would really miss some of the OB features.

I agree with HyPNO that Morrowind is the better game. And you don't have to play it to understand Oblivion, as everyone is saying. But Morrowind just seems more imbedded in the Elder Scrolls lore and is so enjoyable to play. There's just something missing about Oblivion for me, so far anyway ... can't put my finger on it exactly. But maybe after more Oblivion time it will grow on me or I'll figure out what is lacking that Morrowind had is such abundance.

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

hehe, yes, I definetly know what your talking about. I get that strange feeling also. I think that it may be that I always have something on my mind in OB like something I need to do... like the quest arrows always nagging me to do something but in Morrowind I could just stroll peacefullly through the country side with out a care in the world... good times smile.gif
Ibis
Yeh, your right ... you felt alot more free to wander the countryside in Morrowind.

I have been playing since Arena days and Morrowind is definitely still my favorite out of the ESIV.

Well, I have been playing Oblivion for about 3 weeks now, I like it. I have also been thinking about Morrowind and the question I asked here. I understand that I don't need to play MW to understand the story in OB, after all, we are the story. I think I was asking if I should experience MW before OB because of the upgrade in graphics and technology would make MW look so old and outdated.
So, I went out and bought a copy of MW , the GotY edition. Installed it and started playing. At the character creation, it seemed kinda familier. Then I stepped out on the street and walked to the next building. That's when I realized that I had tried MW years ago, before I started EQ.
Yes, the graphics are old technology and the game seems quiet. What really got to me was the same feature that probably turned me off the first time I tried it. The fonts...they are all small, dark and in some old English type of style. It makes it hard for me to read the dialogue and thus makes the game hard to follow. I'm not a young fellow and my eyesight is less than 20/20, so this is a big hang-up for me, even wearing my reading glasses. OB on the other-hand, is bright, cheerful and the font is large and the in a style that is easy to read. If MW had a mod that could change the font size, type, color and or background, I might be able to handle it.
I have been reading alot about the RPG aspect of TES and I would like to become emmersed in an RPG. EQ was not what I would consider a real RPG, it was...something. smile.gif
If any of you can help me make MW better to play, I would be glad to give it a try. If you know of any mods that would help make the game more attractive plaese paste a link here, as it would be near impossible to find one in the 5827 odd mods availible for MW.
Thanks

Buy morrowind while its cheap and its around. I personally think its better. The music is great. There are so many great mods. So after you have gotten bored, mod it.

Morrowind kept me busy for 2 years. It takes quite a game to do that. Oblivion kept me busy for about a month.
