Um, some dumb-ish questions on tips on how to be a part-time thief-part-time-battle-mage. embarrased.gif

Okay, here is my situation: I have done a few of the main quest-quests, and I'm thinking of taking a break and joining the Thieves Guild. Bribed and used my lovely Speechcraft skills on a beggar. She mentioned something about meeting at the Elven Gardens or something (forgot right now) with the Thieves Guild.

I've heard on official elder scrolls forums that there is some sort of 'test' you have to pass in order to become recognized as a Thieve Guild member.

*Okay, what I'm worried about is, what level should I be to pass this test? Like, how high of a sneaking skill/thieving skill should I have?*

I've tried stealing a few things, but, as soon as I get out of the house/building, the nearest guard would rush towards me and punish me as if he had psychic powers or something. wacko.gif *Could someone explain how the crime system works?* Apparently, my sneaking skills are too low or something. kvleft.gif

Basically, any sneaking, stealing, pickpocketing, thief tips are greatly appreciated. Thank you. smile.gif

the test is easy. all you have to do is be able to pick a average or high lock. how the system works is that if u are seen in a house that u are stealling from the gaurds will come.

Oh! Sooo, that's why the guards seem to have teh 6th sense...

So, I have to be able to pick an average/high lock? I'm at level 1 (believe it or not), and I can pick easy locks... I'll try to lockpick a random person's house with 'average' lock and see how it goes. Hopefully, it won't be too hard (I hope).

Thank you for heads up! smile.gif

If you have the magicka for it you can buy a spell to break each level of lock they are of the School of Alteration

When you sneak, you see the eye in the centre? If it's lit up someone can see you, so you cannot steal anything. When it fades you can do whatever you want. So wait until someone turns their back.

That's the same when it comes to enemies, as long as the eye is faded you're alright and enemies haven't seen you, so you will get a sneak attack on you're first attack. When it get's all clear, then you're spotted wink.gif

Through out Oblivion you will have to pick locks a lot, so you should just keep picking locks as long as you're not seen, along with learning some 'Open ... Locks' spells wink.gif

Ah, okay. Cool. So faded eye= good. (For some reason, I thought it was vice-versa, like the eye glowing meant it was safe to steal tongue.gif .) That could explain my recent bad luck with guards. laugh.gif Thanks, guys. =)

Just few more questions (sorry if they're dumb sad.gif ):

1. How much does armor and weight of clothes/shoes affect sneaking? Like, I usually wear dresses (because I'm not much of an armor girl) and maybe sandals or cheap shoes. Do my shoes have to be the lightest they can be in terms of weight (that little feather symbol) or do I have to wear boots? (I'm a little confused because I heard shoes can affect sneaking or something. At least, I'm pretty sure I heard something like that.).

2. If I talk to someone (or guard) after stealing something of theirs (or breaking into their house recently), do I get in trouble right away? Like, will they know I stole their stuff, if I talked to them with their stuff in my inventory? Or, if I broke into their house, and then exited the house, the owner of the house is right outside... Do they know?

3. Does my sneaking/stealing skill affects how valuable/heavy an object I can pickpocket?

Besides that, I think pretty much okay with the rest of the stealing part for now. Sorry for my dumb questions. mellow.gif

You are too humble laugh.gif
Those are not stupid questions.Since i'm a stealth char i can answer you:

1)Armor doesn't effect sneaking. At least the Light one, same goes for robes. However, weight of your boots does.Don't worry, ligh armor boots are quite enough, and sandals could be even better. When you become a Journeyman (skill 50) of Sneak, the weight of your boots doesn't metter anymore.

2)Answer for both questions:No.RAI isn't that smart.

3)Yes.You will notice that it's easyer to steal 100 gold than Daedric short sword.

Ah, so the RAI is not at all like the Sims' AI in which Sims have teh 6th sense and can sense when someone's cheating on them, even when they're (the people being cheated on) outside out of the house two floors down, and across the street a bit far from the house. laugh.gif I guess that's good to hear? biggrin.gif

Thanks very much for answering my questions! happy.gif My female Bosmer Thief/Mage appreciates it.
