confused....
What's the game about?
Darkwing
Apr 19 2005, 02:25 PM
The game is split into 3 different areas. Combat, research and money. They are all symbiotic and thus should receive equal attention. I shall explain more about how they affect each other later. However, there are 2 separate components that deal with the 3 areas which I shall go into now:

Global view:
Based on the older xcom games, this view is where all of the management is handled. From recruiting to research, deployment to defence, everything is accessible from this screen.
The primary focal point is a 3D sphere representing Earth. It does not rotate on its own but it does have a rotational shadow to indicate day and night. The user can manually rotate the globe by holding the right button down and moving the mouse.
On the globe, areas of interest are indicated by a thin red line that reaches out from the surface. When the user rolls over the square icon on the surface, an information panel will popup to give whatever information is known about that current event.
On clicking the areas of interest, options will be presented that tie in with whatever event is occurring.

The Base Screen button takes you into the guts of the management, replacing the globe with a plan of the base you pick from your list, offering analysis of base facilities, allowing you to add or remove them. You can check on your supplies as well and all other options are avaliable.
The Research Button replaces the globe with a listing of current available research and gives you the opportunity to assign numerous scientists to start work on which ever research option you choose. Multiple researches can be started provided you think you have enough scientists to cover the work load.
The Barracks button brings up a list of your current soldiers. When you select one, it fires up a screen that profiles them, including a ragdoll which shows what armour and weaponry they are equipped with. At the bottom is an iconic horizontal list of base items that you can equip on the soldier until all slots are used up.
The stats of the soldier are also available for viewing, and you can check how much they have improved as well as check for any medals that were offered for courage etc.
The Intercept button brings up a listing of bases with whichever aircraft they have. Once an aircraft is selected, you then select the hosile craft and the pursuit will begin across the globe.
The Funding button brings up your monetary situation. Including maintenance costs for the month, salaries, overall income from sales of technology and income from supporting factions.
The Options button simply fires up a window that supplies you with options for the game.

Looks cool. Though im more a fan of shoot-em-ups, RPGs, fighters, action adventures and such than Strategy games and the like.
I have *absolutely* no strategic skill.
Wolfie
Apr 19 2005, 09:08 PM
My strategic skill tends to be limited to buildingup loads of tanks or something and sending them in to do as much damage as they can.

Minque, the clever boy wasn't sarcastic. The second bit? Just a smidgeon, a really really small tinge of sarcasm. Maybe.

For the record, your honour, let me just clarify, that I, at no time, intended to suggest, imply or insinuate that Minque's comment was made in a manner even remotely approaching sarcasm. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Minque is a member of impeccable character, and would never stoop to the levels that I do.
Now, before I get too carried away...I think it sounds a fascinating idea, and it looks like it will be a huge project, so I hope it comes to fruition. Hey, he knows I'll buy it, if only to see more of his artwork. Hm, wonder if there'll be a daedra hidden in there somewhere?

GeoScape
Just something to illustrate (very roughly) how the Global Screen operates. Rolling the mouse over the globe will mean you can navigate over its surface. Obviously there is no detailing or quality and the buttons off to the right are not linked, but are interactive.

That's some awesome work Darkwing. Kind of inspires me to get into programming again - I never did anything that good, but it's really nice to write your own games (even if they are nowhere near as good as that funky thing you're doing

)

Ooh, very nice, Darkwing. :goodjob: I like the look and how it's set up. Sounds very interesting.
Though I have
no strategy sense, especially when it comes to money stuff.

I'm a shopper, not a saver of money.

But, I like to play strategy games despite this great weakness.
So, I wish you the best of luck and have fun!
