but if you get into the main story a little you get a horse for free

Bring Martin back to Weynon Priory and after that situation is cleared, you're to bring Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple in Bruma. Martin and Jauffre will go back to the stables and take 2/3 horses. The third belongs to the dead Prior. Once you get on, it is yours.

I bought the imperial city house, I felt obligated, it looked so cozy. A warm bed and a place to drop my stuff, what else could a man ask for? Besides, the waterfront are my people, loyal to the Gray Fox till the end!

I haven't purchased one yet , permanently, but I am saving up gold for the Bruma one. I have like 8000 gold and 12000 if I sell all my gear, so I went on a little shopping spree by trying out each house just for size. Personally, I think the one in lewy.. le.. (the town farthest south) is okay, but it is quite expensive for very little room. I like the one in Bruma, as it has two floors and it looks pretty nice. The manor you can purchase in.... crap I can't believe I keep forgetting these names! The town west of Skingrad, it has a large manor for 5000 gold but it was very creepy and it had a seal in the basement, which I assume is for some quest about the owner who dissappeared 100 yeras ago.
Because of my lack of gold, I could only buy one or two furnishings =(
I'm pretty sure the Bruma house is for me =)

The manor in Anvil becomes fixed up and fully furnished once you lift its curse. Before that, however...

You do? Hmm... well anyway I don't really like Anvil, it is too pretty and calm. I didn't even know which place was for sale in Skingrad, thanks... how much was the Rosethorn (without furnishings). And do you treat your servant well?

The cheapest house in the game is only 2000 Gold. You can buy it from the woman at the Imperial Census & Excise Office in the Market District. (Thats not the correct name for the building but I'ts close) First you have to raise her disposition to at least 60 for her to mention the house in conversation. You can do that using the Speechcraft mini-game or by bribing her. The house is located right outside the city in the Waterfront District.
Once you have bought the house, you can buy furnishings at the Three Brothers Trade Goods in the Market District. The only furnishings I have bought was the Storage Room kit. It adds a chest to the foot of the bed, a Dresser beside the fireplace and another chest to the left side of the fireplace.
Its pretty cozy and functional for a house that only costs 2000 Gold. Plus it is right there outside the Imperial City so the location is good.

When you purchase the house, usually the person who sold it to you will tell you have barren the home is, and suggest a trader to buy furnishings from. To buy the furnishings, simply barter with that particular person and you'll see small little paper notes that say "furnishing storage" ect. Purchase these and your house is automatically changed. This was for the guy who asked where you buy furnishings..
Edit: Soulseeker you better watch your stuff, it will disappear after awhile... I kept my stuff hidden in a crate in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary until I found out it disappears after a week or so of no use (game time week)

I haven't bought a house yet. I might not even bother until I'm so rich I dont know what to do with all of my money. I travel on foot alot and alot of the dungeons and ruins usually have a bedspread in them or outside them. And since I get alot of my experience at those dungeons, its just about the only time I even need to rest.

What do servants do? Can you talk to them? Do they help in anyway or are they just another Decoration? Do they just wander around? Stand in place? Or do they actually have some sort of servant like animation? I thought I read a post somewhere about NPCs not having "work" animations but HEY, you can read ANYTHING somewhere if you just look hard enough...

I really want to have a glass display case in my house. (One of the ones that lift up.) But I have a feeling that you can't buy one since furnishings are bought room by room. Can't buy upgrades for Benirus Manor. DB sanctuary is a bit dreary. What you need is this nice $25,000 house in Skingrad! All shiny and new and waiting for you to furnish it (for another $40k or more)! If I like you enough, I'll give you a discount on the furnishings, glass display cases and all.
I've got 4 regular houses now.... that Daedric stuff sells at $1200 a pop in the merchant's quarter (yes, it appears they pushed a fix out to Xbox 360 for the money sales glitch), plus the weekly 'pensions' from DB and Arena.
Maybe I'll do the main quest one of these days.

Man, I was fooling around with my (6-7) display cases in my Skingrad house and it is hard to get stuff to go in there....

You have to basically throw items at the case and hope it goes in, and the bigger the item, the more difficult it is. I gave up on my daedric claymore after about 10 minutes and just put it on top of some drawers, were at least I can shove it around. I agree, that Bethesda screwed up this one. They've gotta know how much time people spent organizing their displays in MW, and now they made it harder to do!!!
