the games release date is march 20th, but I keep hearing 21st as being the day to get it.
in other words: can I get the game on monday, the 20th
or is that just the day it ships?

It ships on the 20th, most stores will receive it the 21st. There are rumors that some online stores may ship preorders to arrive at the customer on the 20th, but this is unlikely.
The game does ship March 20th but everyone in America (hooray that's me 
) get it on the 21st, the day it will actually arrive in all of the stores. As for the rest of the world, they will get it some time later that week.
