Chapter three
The Sixteenth Tower
The land on the right side of the wall was a dry plane with sharp grey rocks sticking from the gound. Some rocks stood up like giant claws from the ground which could grab an innocent creature any minute.
The temperature decreased in a couple of months. The sun no longer shined above the wall which was now covered in the dark shadows of the clouds. The gateless wall was made out of black stones and looked like a giant black carcas which lied along the borders Ijiihlarin. Ziirah was watching the dead plane in front of him from the wall. The wind caused the red sand to fly away which caused a red fog of sand above the sharp rocks. In spite of his brown- grey fur Ziirah noticed that the wind was giving him a cold chill down his spline. Right next to him was Sahniir, also a Chiniir covered in black fur, his tail was moving inpatiently as if he knew that something was about to happen. Ziirah was the commander of the sixth- and seventh walls and towers. The wall was build out of thirty towers each with his own wall.
Ziirah could barely see the sun through the dark clouds which was about to set soon. In the corner of his right eye he noticed that the torches were lit. One by one, like a wave of light which slowly came closer passed their tower and went on to the next.A liquid fluid in a small canal at the bottom of the tower was set on fire to lit the lower torches.
Ziirah felt the increasing cold and pulled his darkblue cloak over his shoulders.
”It’s to quiet on the other side of the wall” said Shaniir to Ziirah.
Ziirah slowly turned his head and looked at Shaniir. The left eye of Ziirah had a yellow, allmost golden color wile his right eye was as blue as a clear sky.
”I sense it too” said Ziirah.
All the sudden Zirrah heared a loud growl from the sixteenth tower. Ziirah could see that the torches at the bottom of the tower burned out.
”aim for the sixteenth tower” Ziirah said to Sahniir.
The soldiers on the seventeenth wall were already aiming their crossbows at the rocks where the lights went out. The previous days Ziirah noticed strange shadows but he thought some lost sandghosts were playing tricks with his mind. “Sandghosts never cross the borders” he said to himself. Then a loud bang followed at the bottom of the sixteenth tower. Ziirah didn’t hesitated one moment and called his replacer so he could leave to the sixteenth tower.
He ran as quick as he could over the wall to the tower. Sahniir was still on the seventeenth tower and folowed Ziirah with his eyes.
The tower was dark from the inside, the red light of the lights on the ceiling were the only light source inside the tower. Ziirah took the small stairs which led him down into the tower. Then he heared a strange voice coming from the first hall below him. The voice sounded like a scream and a laugh at the same time. “Xanjii, Iindar come with me!” he yelled at the two guards on the first balcony.
When he reached the second stair he heared loud growls and screaming comming from the hall below him. A hard breeze of wind followed which caused the lights to go out. Ziirah tried to find a torch but he couldn’t find one. He had to rely on his own eyes, but he quickly got used to the darkness. Xanjii and Iindar were just behind Ziirah.
”Follow me” he said to the guards.
Downstairs he heared a loud voice again, this time it looked like a soldier.
”IS ANYONE DOWN THERE?!” he yelled but nobody replied.
Step by step Ziirah went down the stairs which lead to the hallways inside the wall. All the sudden he saw something moving in the corner of his eye. A shadow of a figure who should be right in front of him but there was nothing to see. Ziirah heared Iindar screaming out loud behind him. He quickly turned arround and saw how Iindar was sucked into the wall, grabbed by two dark arms which came out of nothing. “IINDAR!” Ziirah yelled. But Iindar was gone, there was only a trail of blood which went from the floor to the ceiling and disapeared.
”WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE!” ziirah growled. He noticed two eyes were watching him but he couldn’t see them. His sword was no match for this and Ziirah only had one chance to survive, he had to leave the tower. As quick as he could he ran upstairs with Xanjii right behind him. His eyes got used to the darkness but he noticed that everything went completely black behind him. Xanjii screamed and Ziirah turned arround. He was pulled into the darkness just like Iindar. Ziirah ran back and tried to grab Xanjii’s hand but the darkness was to fast and strong. “GOOOO!” Xanjii screamed at Ziirah with his last breath. “GOO WILE YOU STILL CAN!” he yelled. Ziirah hesitated to turn around but Xanjii’s faith was already decided. With all the strength that he got he tried to move faster but he could already see the door to the wall.
”SEAL THE GATE! GET THE MEN OFF THE TOWER!” he yelled when he set foot on the wall again. The soldiers build a blokade in front of the tower door as fast as he could. At the top of the tower Ziirah could hear some soldiers scream.
”THE SHADOWS! THE SHADOWS”!
Ziirah looked down at the bottom of the tower and saw five dark shadows comming from underneath the tower. They disapeared in the darkness of the sharp rocks followed by a rain of arrows.Ziirah sat down on a rock which was sticking out of the wall with his head in his hands.
“What happened?!” said Sahniir who left his tower.
”The shadows…they…they…the darkness took them” he said wile gasping for breath.
He grabbed Ziirah and took him back to his room in the seventeenth tower.
”Tomorrow we will investigate the tower by daylight” he said to Ziirah.
By the break of dawn the sixteenth tower was abandonned. Ziirah was standing on the wall looking at the dark tower where he lost many men the other night. A group of soldiers led by Sahniir crossed the borders to investigate the bottom of the tower.
Sahniir set foot on the red sand followed by soldiers. He never saw the rockformations this way, they looked more frightening than from above the wall. A maze of sharp rocks went down into the darkness. He knew there was nothing to fear because he had seen what lied behind it from the seventeenth tower.
The doors of the sixteenth tower were open, Ziirah was the first one to enter the tower. There was a horrible smell inside the tower something he never smelled before in his life. Ziirah entered the first hallway inside the wall.
The ground was covered with blood, there were traces of blood going up the wall like the night before. The only indication of life were the parts of armor and clothes which seemed to be ripped of the soldiers. Ziirah couldn’t find the entrance which the creatures used to ge tinto the towers but his eye noticed some strange cracks in the wall which weren’t there before.
”The lower levels of this tower will be shut. Clean up the mess and close the cracks in the wall. From now on we will only use the third level and higher, from the third level we will close the towers. Send a report to the Illunarim” said Ziirah to his men.
Sahniir was already back on the wall. “We only found some strange cracks down at the bottom of the tower” he said to Ziirah.
”I know we found the same cracks inside the tower. They will be shut from now on till the third level” he replied. Ziirah noticed that the sun was setting. “To soon” He said to himself. “the day isn’t over yet but the sun is already setting”.
Ziirah was standing next to Sahniir on the sixteenth tower. Like the same night the torches were lit. The soldiers were watching the bottom of the towers closely. After a couple of hours Ziirah heared the same scream as the night before, this time it came from the ninth tower at his right hand. “They have returned” Sahniir said to him.
