Full Version: Bethesda Newsletter

Did anyone else get a newsletter from Bethesda? I'm not sure what I did to subscribe... maybe it's everyone with an account on the official Bethsoft forums?

It had some stuff about Oblivion that I hadn't seen before. A screenshot of a statue (along with two other screens I've seen before: the khajitt on the wharf and the dwemer armour outside Cheydinhal), and a link to a new dev diary.

The dev diary has some nice info about magic:

QUOTE
My personal favorite is Detect Life. In Morrowind, this effect placed icons on the minimap indicating where creatures or characters could be found. It was a nice effect but not workable for Oblivion, so now when Detect Life is cast, a magical cloud, which is visible even when the creature is not, will envelop each nearby creature. You can watch these clouds to track potential targets, and usually you can even identify which creature you are looking at by the specific shape and movement of its cloud.

QUOTE
The Chameleon spell, for instance, uses our awesome refraction special effect to render targets nearly invisible, like a block of clear walking ice or a cloaked Predator.

And good news for modders:

QUOTE
But we know that just tweaking our spells isn’t enough for you guys, so there is one brand new, very special magic effect that we hope will give modders a great deal of creative freedom. It’s called Script Effect, and using it in conjunction with the scripting system, modders will be able to expand the magic system and create spells that do things we at Bethesda haven’t even thought of yet.

Yes I got one too, very strange..... I didn't think I did anything for it.

That would indeed make sense. I had assumed that I must have signed for it, but I bet it was an official forums dealy.

I was rather excited to see something abou the magic system. The devs have been particularly tight-lipped about this aspect of gameplay, and I was beginning to think we weren't going to learn anything until the game came out. I am very excited about the modding potential of the script effect; many people managed to accomplish a similar sort of effect with Morrowind, but this looks a lot easier. This update pushed me back into the pure mage camp for my first character; it sounds like they should be a very viable option for Oblivion.

I haven´t got one...... sad.gif

You can find the text of the dev diary here.

(Since the newsletter is supposedly sent free to all forum members, I hope it's okay to post the link).
DoomedOne
This makes me want to make a matrix total conversion mod.

Just realized the link to the dev diary was in the first post; I didn't have to post it after all.

There were a couple posts on the official forums about changing the board email settings so that you could get the emails. If the email that the forums have is correct, then just make sure the "receive emails from administrators" option is checked. Oh, and mine ended up in Yahoo's bulk mail folder, so your email server may have decided it was spam.

I got it and felt all warm and fuzzy inside.
I have be trolling through sites looking for every tidbit I could find.
Now Bethseda sends them straight to me, heaven!
And what a great letter, screenshots and a dev post.
I for one have always stayed away from magic, it just seemed like to much trouble, much rather pick up a sword and hit something. But this new system looks fantastic, there seems to be so much reward both visually and gameplay wise.

I got it too... I love the fire vs. skeletons screenshots
