Well,
It's much the same as making an avatar. Only the dimensions are different.
First of all, to make a decent sig, you will need a program like Corel Paintshop or Adobe Photoshop. All you have to do then is mess around in any way you wish within an area of about 400 by 200 or 100 pixels.
It's simple, really.

Will Fireworks do for the program? Also, I really dont get how to join images and to cleanly cut out parts of images off a full picture.

The best way is to take screenshots of the images you want to use. I use a program called GrabClipSave but some people just push the ScreenShot key on the keyboard and the images wind up in your MyDocuments/MyPictures folder.
Then double click on them and they should open in the Paint program. Here you can click the dotted square icon and put a dotted line around the part of the pic you want, then click Edit/Copy and then go to File/New and make sure the square is smaller than the pic you will be pasting. If its larger - hit Image/Stretch-Skew and make it smaller .. easiest way is to swipe away the last 0 of 100 to make it 10. Then in this small square paste your copied image. Now if you want to resize it in some way, open Stretch-Skew again. Save.
Now its good to have a photo enhancing program - I use Photo Finish, it was free on a disk. You can download one probably. Here you can further enhance your image and you can copy/paste to combine the various elements of your design together. You can also do some decent Text message here. When its done save it in .jpg format.
Then you know the rest .. upload it just like a siggy at a photo hosting site and post it here in the edit signature slot. Hope that helps.

Very helpful Ibis. Thanks a lot! So screenshot, crop, resize, enhance, and text and we have an amature sig. I'll have to try to make one myself.
