What is your favorite sport? Do you like any sport at all?
Do you like playing it, or just watching it?

Mine's football.
And I don't mean American football, I'm thinking real football (soccer to you yanks tongue.gif)
Khajiit Overlord Rainer
The only sport Rainer Played was "Soccer" smile.gif

He quit after a few years. sad.gif
Fethenwen
Oh, I so do love watching Icehockey! And GP F1.

But I don't do sports, I wish I would, but it seems a bit late to start now. I just like running.
Bofra
I love to watch big events in football (soccer) like this upcoming WC biggrin.gif. But I don't play it, well at least not seriously, only occasionally with friends.

I do train Wushu though, if you can call that a sport. We prefer to call it a "style" wink.gif. Only trained for one year but I love it. smile.gif It's great to have something to do on weekdays to relax from studies and work, it trains my body and clears my mind.

My favourite sport has to be soccer. It is such a good excuse to turn off the tv. biggrin.gif
Man, I think some people here take the WC a bit too far. A few days ago, I heard of a competition. (prize was two tickets for the WC or something) The competition was who could paint his house orange in the most creative way.

Big waste of paint, it looks bad and it is just a stupid idea. Not to mention, buying all that paint would be more expensive than buying two tickets. Oh well, we Dutch are just plain nuts.

Other favourite sports? I used to play Badminton a few years back, but the club got turned into a 'run laps around the hall for two hours cause there's nothing else to do' affair and I quit.
dagoth carlos
i love to play judo(i think its a sport)
Its like wrestling, but it makes use of throws.....

The down side is, im a white belt...... but im entering in a parade w./my judo club, we get to show off all the action on our float while the others show specific techniques ^^

(Edit)I also do Karate.... im a brown belt in Shorin-Ryu.... but i dont think that specific style participates in the olympic ..... i know that some colleges in japan have karate as a school sport... so yeah

(edit 2)Yeah.... i used to do Xing Yi.... but chinese martial arts dont appeal to me... cept for wushu and wing chun... unless they are one-in-the-same blink.gif
Foster
I used to play Rugby League for my university. Played Prop. Back at school though I played second row in Union.

I like football - I'm a Leeds United fan (I know that is quite often contradictory to being a football fan, seeing as they're sometimes so bad it doesn't count as football). I watch the odd American Football game, following the Minnesota Vikings. I also like a good game of cricket - wonderful spectator sport. I don't know if Snooker counts, but I play a bit of that too. Uhm.. Archery is fun.

Oh, and Badminton, too. I like whacking my loaf of bread at opponents. Problem is getting the balance between height and power - quite often it stays up too long, and they just whack it back at me.

That's just crazy, it seems you had some bad experiences with sports. I'm not fanatical at all, I watch the WC and nothing else, that's once every four years! What I like about it is the fact that countries all over the world come together and actually stop their seriousness with politics, wars, disputes, etc, and just have fun playing football! It's like my dream come true when it comes to politics smile.gif.

Is white belt bad? Cause I don't see the downside of going on a parade. It sounds very fun biggrin.gif. In Kung-Fu we don't use belts, so I just know that black belt is the best tongue.gif.

Every time a European says ''soccer'', a puppy implodes. Save the puppies, and say the real word: Football laugh.gif Hehe, I really had to say that tongue.gif

I'm one of those who will watch World Cup, and cheer for my nation until my throat stops functioning. And now it's payback time! Orange will be anihilated this time. Buwahahahahah ! ! ! !

Oh, I don't know... Just because I watch it doesn't mean that I know much about it tongue.gif. I hope for Sweden of course, we have a great team this year and a good starting-board (we can deal with England, Paraguay might be a surprise-challenge, Trinidad-Tobago... well.. let's just say it's fun to see them on the WC biggrin.gif).

Watching: hockey

Doing: running (I'm training to run the Chicago Marathon in October)
milanius
When I was younger, much younger (elementary school) I played football. I sucked at it, but hey, it was good fun (unless you'd fall down - we played on concrete terrains X( ). Then, in highschool, I played B-Ball with friends, but only as a form of recreation, nothing competitive (our schools are much diferent on that matter than the ones in USA)...
...and finally, after highschool, I've stopped with intensive physical activities sad.gif I'm a regular couch-potato now. Still, I enjoy watching football, B-ball, tennis (Rolan Gaross is on, btw), ice hockey and various other sports... and yes, I am too concerned about that first game Serbia has against Holland ohmy.gif HyPNO, it would be wise to knock on the wood first, and then get into the fightin' spirit biggrin.gif *knocks on wood and prays for the boys in Blue*
Mazelure
I like boxing... every once in a while my cousin and I put on the boxing gloves and beat each other silly... until one feels like passing out or if we get exhausted... one time we lasted 20 minutes fighting... my mom was just watching and laughing how both of us almost fell after throwing a punch... good times... good times...
1234king
my favorite sports ( i cant decide between the two) are both footballs.
CornedBeef
Me likes to play and watch tennis but people in the US don't pay all that much attention to it which sucks for me.
DoomedOne
I play everything, almost, or used to before I moved about 5 years ago, but I still love snowboarding, and I know the rules to any games my friends pick up in a field.

And I loathe that.....I wanted to do it without measuring the time to go a certain distance, just swim for fun! ot noooooway!!! Always that discussion of time and how much improvement since last time

gah!!!

So now I do activities on my own.....it suits me fine!
Lord DoomsDay
Well I got hooked on the last WC soccer ("bark" "bark" "YELP" "POP!!!" ohmy.gif , Hey I'm Not European!!! Get that puppy back here!) tongue.gif

I'm still ticked at how my country got taken out last time by spain. sad.gif
I'm Sticking with Brazille all the way this time.

Pro-wrestling is one of my fav.s as well, It's fun watching big guy dress up and beat the living crap out of each other. biggrin.gif
Some of those moves looks like thay realy hurt. ohmy.gif They do at home in any case, esspecialy on thin matresses and hard concrete floors. wink.gif
Fuzzy Knight
Well... think it's between soccer and off-road biking smile.gif I really like to do a lot of things, either involving wheels or a ball. Played soccer since I was about 5 years old, played golf since I was 10 which was the same period I started both climbing and interest in off-road biking. When I was 12 it was hockey I started getting hooked on... But it's been a year since I have played hockey and quite some time since I ever climbed anything at all.. tongue.gif

... but I guess for now, that soccer is my favorite sport wink.gif
Geonox
I'm not realy into sports. Don't have the time and besides I'm lazy so it's just the usual workouts here tongue.gif. But I always liked doing softball. At least we call it like that, it's the same or at least allmost the same, as baseball.
Ibis
My favorite sport is baiting 19 year olds and watching their reactions. laugh.gif
Bofra
Oh no! *Runs away and hides for three weeks until he's 20*

Hey, wait, I know Kung Fu!

To stay on topic: I also like riding bikes, as a fact I'm going out on a trip this summer of a total of 1140km. smile.gif That's going to be fun biggrin.gif
Ibis
Wow, Bofra - sounds fun. I like bicycle riding too, I forgot that. I have no earthly idea what kilometers are, how long I mean; but Cain & I used to ride our bicycles about 10 miles a day when we really rode them everywhere.

1 mile = round about 1,6 kilometers.

Oh, and my favourite sport is basket ball and (what's it called? Like tennis but with the feathered ball?)
Ibis
I think you mean badmitten
Bofra
1140 km is around 708 miles (1 km is 0,6 miles, not 10km = 0,6miles)

And by the way, Badmitten? Don't you mean Badminton? Or is Badmitten another word for it?
Ibis
We always called it badmitten in our neighborhood.

I also love swimming. I just do it now in our pool for fun but I used to be on the high school swim team.

Cool Ibis, swimming skills kinda run in my family... my father is a great swimmer, he says I'm very good too even thought I've never joined a team but I swim as often as I can. Good exercise and free diving is cool since I can actually hold my breath very long smile.gif My cousin is a very good swimmer, she's been a lot of places in Europe etc. in swimming competitions smile.gif

Go Oilers!

Seriously, though, I just want to see some good hockey. In spite of my Canadian roots, I really don't care who wins (I would prefer if the team that plays better hockey would actually win).
Bofra
Gah, how can you like hockey?! blink.gif You can barely see the black thingey they score with and all you see is a bunch of adrenaline-pumped dudes at the edge of starting to fight.. kvleft.gif

No, seriously, I never understood hockey, can't bear to see a whole match as I just think they look so childlish fighting and getting pissed over a little push.. I bet nothing hurts in that outfit so why get so angry?

Nay, football it is biggrin.gif.
Foster
But in Football you don't carry a big wooden stick.

Still, I don't like sport that involves padding. American Football (and I can say this because I've played it) is wussy compared to Rugby and Aussie Rules. You don't NEED all the pads and crap - it's like walking around as a tank. Basically the line of scrimmage is exactly the same as a contested scrum, and a catch can be the same as...well, a catch.

American Football is like watered down Rugby. And whilst I'm sure some people like wussy games (nothing wrong with it, in fact I'm not so much one on psychosports myself) I just get peeved when people go on about how tough it is, as though it's some merit badge to be a lobotomised and overwieght man that only plays defence or offence and feels the need to wear a helmet and pads.

Also what is it with American sports and ad breaks? A 60 minute game lasts 5 hours once you've had your bursts of advertisement whilst they...I don't know, walk around doing nothing between plays. It's not a really good spectator sport - it's like playing a PC game that pauses itself every five seconds.
mplantinga
Yeah, the frequent ad breaks are a bit annoying. But, they do give you time to fulfill the calls of nature (more chips, more soda - or beer, if you prefer - etc).
Ibis
Foster has reminded me - the padding is stupid looking. For spectator sports of watching handsome, burley men trying to anialate each other - I like either wrestling or boxing. Because both wear nice minamalistic uniforms that make them look handsome while destroying each other.

Football they look to packed in the uniform and deformed really, basketball is stinky being stuck in a gym with all the sweating people and their winter coats, baseball uniforms are just too all covering and formal looking, swimming they either shave their heads or wear stupid swimhats. Hockey you can't even see their faces and I am not privelegded to see soccer or rugby, so I can't comment on those.

That's where you're terribly wrong.
American Football

Compare to.....

Rugby

Notice the first tackle. That's a STANDARD tackle in American football; something that repeats itself almost every single play. Yet the announcer calls it the biggest hit of the season. Hands down, American Football is much more violent than rugby.

Pretty much because those who play American Football nearly has armour, while those who play Rugby doesn't. It's a line on Rugby which you can't really cross when you tackle since they don't wear a whole lot of equipment as those in American Football do...

Like I said - having played both, having experienced both, Rugby is more violent.
stargelman
I never understood why they call it "American Football". You barely see anyone kick that egg. Plus it's much closer to Rugby than to what is called Football in Europe, thus they should have called it "American Rugby". I've played both for a very little while when we tried out a number of different sports in school, and I like the throwing of the egg and stuff, but looking at those vids and hearing from a number of people who've played Rugby in their spare time I don't think it's something I'd wanna do.

When it comes to playing, my favs have always been Football (Soccer in the US) and Badminton. We always used to play Football during breaks in school, even if it was only a 10 minute break. There was always time for a quick game. I usually played defense or goalkeeper. I think I was ok, unless we had to use tennis balls instead of regular footballs, then I had real trouble catching that thing laugh.gif

When it comes to watching, it's Football, too (yes, still talking about Soccer). For a while, I also watched Sumo regularily. It's really kind of amazing, and I don't use that word lightly. You get to see wrestlers like Musashimaru - weighing in at 440 pounds - graciously jump out of their attacking opponents way like a professional ballerina 1/4th their weight. That alone is pretty amazing. Sumo isn't just about fat man bumping each others. There's a surprising amount of skill involved, not to mention enormous strength and willpower. The techniques used by Sumo wrestlers are very close to that used in Judo. There's throws and special grabs and such things. BTW, it's a great sport for those with a short span of attention: the fights are usually over in significantly less than 30 seconds.

Of course, right now all I can think of is the Worldcup. Tomorrow's the first day of this biggest sporting event of the world. Can't wait!

I used to do about 20 km but now I don't have my bike anymore sad.gif 20km would be about 16-18 miles I guess, I need a new bike, busing is expensive, comparatively cheap but not as cheap as free. And as for cars, I'm not a cave man, I'll leave cut and burn to them.

My favourite sport is snowboarding, as Ibis knows. Last year I was playing turf hockey but I am too lazy to do so this year, it was getting to serious for me, everyone expecting me to put in commitment.
Bofra
Here in Uppsala, the town I live in, everyone lives by their bycicle, it's the town of Sweden with most bycicles per capita and with most extensively built bycicle-streets. So here it's rather normal to ride 15-20 km /day. I for one have 6 km to the trainstation I take to sthlm, so it's 12 km/day usually, and then if I have training I also have to ride 9 km to the training and 9 km back, thats a lot of bicycling tongue.gif.

So, my little trip of 1140km is not that bad tongue.gif.

And oh yeah, tomorrow is the day! Man Germany and Costa Rica is going to be fun to see, I so cheer for Costa Rica! biggrin.gif
Tellie
well, considering that summer have come to Norway, and the gas price have reached the top, I have gotten mroe and more into bicycling, and I enjoy to go on long trips as well:)

But for favourite sport, well I have been spending a lot of time on the football field, but dont know if I like it more than I like Karate or Kung Fu...so, I guess we can count all of them as my favourite sport. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Oh, I have no idea what it's like at pro level. But at college level (I played at Uni) the game is very very rough and very very dirty. American Football is more regulated, and thus far less brutal.

Even thou I despise Rugby ( I can't believe I typed that... that word I think I must wash my self in acid afterwords) I must say it is a lot more violent than American Football.

Down here you can easely spot the Rugby players. theyre the well built guys that have the dazed and confused expresion on theyr face from all the tackeling in the sport.
The Ausie rules games looks rather brutal as well.

Wile we are on joging my mother is gonna run the Comrades for the third time.

My apologies for not reading this entire topic...

I don't play any sports, but the one I enjoy watching the most is curling. smile.gif Lots of closeups of people thinking about tactical decisions, compared to most other sports where you see anonymous glimpses of people with helmets.

This definition applies mainly to winter sports...
