Being prejudgice rather than actaully being hatist. As an example, something all the African Americans I've talked to mention when they are in NZ, is that they find it absolutely strange not being classified as a criminal. A couple of stories from one dude: When he first came to NZ he went to a garage sale and found a nice bike he wanted, he had the money for it but wasn't going to buy a $200 bike without giving it a try so he was abit unsure. However the vendor (white) asked him if he wanted to give it a try and my friend was thinking wtf, are you trying to compassion me or something, no white guys would trust a black guy with his bike, so my friend didn't know what to do so just walked off thinking the guy was hamster cave with him.
Second story, he was visiting the capitial, now the capital has a very obscure foot path from the hill into the city, you have to do all these crazy things like walk through people's backyards. And so naturally he didn't want to go through the wrong person's backyard because he's black and he thinks he'd get shot (not that we have guns but anyhow), so he asks a guy for directions and the guy started giving him directions but says "actaully its a bit complex, I'm driving down there in 5 minutes so how about I give you a ride". My friend was cool with this so he waited and got in the car and it took him about 5 minutes to realise "Hey, wait a minute, doesn't he realise I'm a black guy and I could steal his car", then he realised that yes the guy really didn't realise that because he didn't think of black guys as theives.
Moral of the story is that although the majority of Americans aren't really racist, there is a sort of stereotype that all large black men are criminals, and although he knew he wasn't a criminal he had given into that stereotype as well he thought all white people assumed he was a criminal. Thats racist socialisation, so when African Americans come to NZ they get weirded out like that because in NZ we aren't used to that type of socialisation (we have other socialisations though, but African Americans think we are some kind of model society

). One last story, he likes telling everyone about racist socialisation so I have tons
Can't remember where he was but he wanted a picture of himself infront of some landmark, so he asked a New Yorker white tourist (not knowing he was from New York untill he heard the accent) if he could get a photo of him, so he gave the New Yorker his camera and had a photo taken, then the New Yorker asked my friend to take a photo of him, but just before giving him his camera he asked "Your not going to steal it are you?". My friend made some wise-boat crack (which I forgot) and took the photo. But my friend first of all gave the New Yorker the his own camera first and then was asked to take a photo, didn't volenteer of anything, he was asked to, and yet the New Yorker still tried to make sure he wasn't going to steal it.
I was aware of the stereotype because see it a lot in American TV, but all the African American guys are really nice so I have a completely different stereotype.
