Full Version: Good, free antivirus program?

I finally got fed up with Norton and uninstalled Antivirus and Internet Security.

Any tips for a good, free antivirus replacement? I liked the automatic antispam feature in Norton, where spam got moved to a spam folder, so that would be nice to have as well.

And do I really need a firewall other than the one in Win XP Pro?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have heard that AVG is quite good- using enterprise version of McAfee myself (through the university).

ZoneAlarm can be used for firewall- it can be rather annoying however- esp. if you do any MMORPGs.

And thanks to the rest of you for the tips. I think I'm going to try AVG, as I've seen that recommended several other places as well.

Btw if anyone is wondering about why I uninstalled Norton, which I had paid about $80 for (Antivirus, Internet Security, Norton Tools or whatever it's called), there are mainly two reasons:

1. Very long Windows startup time

2. Constant interruptions while playing games by some kind of update service or schedule thingy, even when I did my very, very best to turn off all automatic updates and schedules. Seems some of them simply is not configurable.

I'll keep Norton installed on my business laptop though, at least until my 1 year subscription runs out...

Thanks again guys!

I use AVG anti-virus
And Kerio Personal Firewall.

Be sure to set kerio to ask you about programs connecting to the internet, otherwise it does stuff automatically. And also in options turn program control off (It asks if a program launches another program IE an autorun launching oblivion)

Kerio hasnt let me down yet.
