I heard it was like Diablo 2 only not that stylish. therefore never thought of actually playing it.
Kora
I played for a little while, when a free weekend was organized, but I didn't bother to make an account. I prefer World of Warcraft. smile.gif

It's a very large, vibrant game world, with the continents of Azeroth and Kalimdor open for play in their entirety. Lots of starting races from which to choose as well (humans, undead, tauren, night elves etc.) and many classes, each with its own characteristics. It has a lot of diversity.

The only bad points are that servers can get crowded, due to the number of players and game masters have their hands full, most of the time, making problem-solving a real pain.

Ibis
I LOVE AND ADORE playing Guild Wars. It is my favorite game, even higher than Oblivion but hmmm... under Morrowind.

I am in the Explorers Guild with my hubby Cain. We have a beautiful dark green cape with a bright yellow sun on back - - - and if anyone wants to join our guild let me know. <----klyk

The GuildMaster is Warrior Angus Grim, and Cain also has Ranger Hern BowSong with Moa pet Lucy. My petite Ranger Hera Bowsong - with giant Moa pet Hurricane - is treasurer and my Necromancer, Krypta MinionMaster, is Recruiter. I also have a Warrioress, Thundara Grim and I recently deleted the beautiful/but/flawed Mesmer, Kate BloodBane in order to make an Elementalist, Deana Thundra, who is the only character still in the greenland before the charring.

I have screenshots of all these chars on my Artsite link in my Siggy.

I played this game for around a thousand hours and I think that is a long run with a game that takes as little time to beat the main story as this one does, when going in overtime I beat the main story (and I play games slowly) in about two months, but during that time I was very addicted to it, then it wore off and I played some Morrowind. I occationally reinstall it and say hi to the people that know me and still play and then a few days later uninstall it again, I will give you my character names in case you wanna gimme a shout out when I am on from your friends list.

Why Heal Why

That character was originally a level 20 (+?? over 300,000 xp)
that I had completely mastered, I can do just about anything with a monk, which was his main class, and I almost never EVER used my subjob skills unless I had something like ascension that was a unique pve situation, if you like pvp then the game has unlimited replay value and I know someone who is still on every single day playing in pvp or guild vs. guild battles, which are 8x8 all out wars, lol.
anyway, the game is good but not really long on the pve end without getting exspansions, still waiting to see how bad they nerf the new classes before I buy factions.
Olav
I'd never heard of this game until I saw this thread, and a few days ago when I was buying another game (Dreamfall) I saw that they had huge amounts of Guild Wars - Special Addition' or something standing in the shelves with other new games.

So is this a multiplayer game only, or also single player?
Ibis
Olav,
It is a delightful combination of both. You start out in a greenland and play solo until you hone your skills to a certain level. Then you are pitted against the invading enemy and go through something called The Charring - in which the beautiful greenery is totally scorched by these huge firebolts that burn the land and leave behind these pits with the remnant cyrstalbolts sticking out. Very ugly.
Then eventually you go over the mountains up to greener lands again.

After the charring, at anytime you have a choice of whether to fight alone, with a party of "mercenery" NPCs, a real party of other players or a mixed party of player/merceneries. It is really cool and at different gates and at different times it is more beneficial to choose real players/NPCs/go it alone.

I hope you will give it a try. It is great fun and it is free online. In fact, it was the first MMORPG since Diablo to be free of monthly payments and it has started a trend amongst the other mmorpg's of giving 1 year free trial (Anarchy Online), Shadowbane has gone completely free now (until it crashes-no maintenance will be done to the server), free 7days with Dungeon & Dragons, .... go to www.mmorpg.com - - - and check out what's going on. Everybody seems to be getting on the freebie train now. Yay!! Way to set a trend, Guild Wars.
Olav
Thanks for the great discription, Ibis. Sounds like just the kind of game I'd like. I especially find the concept of being able to choose single or multiplay interesting. I'll pick it up the next time I get the chance.

Cheers!

edited typos...
Wolfie
One update on what Ibis said, the cataclysmic event that destroys the tutorial type place is called The Searing, rather than the charring tongue.gif
The main enemy in the first area are called the Charr though biggrin.gif
sirrom2007
did u get factions yet wolfie?
Ibis
OMG Wolfie, you are right! The Searing .... I am getting mixed up about fighting The Charr aren't I? I actually really like the look of those huge crystalline looking arrow-type formations that stick out of the craters in the seared landscape.

Thanks for the correction! laugh.gif

Lol any time smile.gif
And still no factions, probably sometime next week
Wolven
I love it, but im waiting to get some cash for Factions biggrin.gif cant wait!
Wolfie
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
My copy of Factions finally arrived! Can't wait to start my assassin biggrin.gif
sirrom2007
yeah i should get my copy this week.
Ibis
So Wolfie, would you play it a bit and then give us a report on whether it is worth the money for Factions to get 2 new characters? I'm not sure about that, whether I really need 2 new chars. But let us know if they also add more new content ok?
ThePerson98
Im waiting for factions to be cheap to buy. Im going to be buying more character slots. Starting to get back into guildwars. But it is only really fun if you are playing with people you are friends with. Such as getting everyone on and playing. Or PVP.
sirrom2007
well if u wanna get 2 lvl 20 fast then get factions.
u get like 3,000 exp 4 really ez missions.
Wolfie
Well Ibis, i had a chance to play FActions for a while, and it's good fun. All the proffessions seem to have gotten a bunch of new skills, and the two new proffessions are both good fun too. As others have mentioned, you get a lot of exp fast, but they've balanced that by making the enemies pretty tricky right from the get-go.
Also, they added an entire new landmass to play on, not quite as big as the one from the original by the looks of it, but still quite expansive smile.gif
Ibis
Thanks for the update Wolfie, sounds like this might be worth buying then biggrin.gif
Wolfie
They've updated the storage now for those who have factions. You pay another 50 and there's another tab in the storage that can hold 250 of every crafting material there is, but you have to buy the upgrade for each character, much like opening a new storage account. Also, you cna only get the upgrade in Cantha, so if you have charactes who aren't there, you have to wait til they reach lion's Arch and can travel there before you can make use of the upgrade. Still cool though, means no more crafting materials taking up space in my storage biggrin.gif
Ibis
This sounds fascinating. I have heard that Factions is more 'Oriental' oriented, whatever that means. I could definitely use more storage space. So Cantha - is that a town in the new landmass?

What is you all's favorite towns in Guild Wars? Mine are definitely Lions Arch - I love fighting in the arena there. My characters aren't very high in level yet. My ranger is highest and she is 18. I also like Beetletun )I think that's how you spell it) and the hot springs town near there which I can't remember the name of. I like Scoundrels Rise too.

What is your favorite monster to fight? I love to kill Mergoyles and to collect their skulls. I also like to fight those giant tree creatures. My favorite mission so far was the one where you teleport that pyramid-thingy back and collect true disciples along the way.

Look for us when we play ... The Explorers Club Guild with a dark green cape with a bright gold sun on the back. biggrin.gif

Cantha is the name of the Factions continent lol biggrin.gif

Favourite town..... Droknar's Forge biggrin.gif Good fight's outside, lots of people inside. You guy buy pretty much anything ther, be it from a player or a trader. I got Gargash's Recurve Bow (a green bow)for the guru price of 7 platinum and a Fiery Storm Bow of Fortitude (+29hp) for 6 platinum :DMy ranger is nicely kitted out now, because i also dyed all his armour silver lol

Favourite monster to fight... don't really have one lol
Dantrag
I have a question about Guild Wars....

If I bought Factions right now without owning the original, could I still play or is it just an expansion?
Wolfie
You can play factions without owning the original, you just wont be able to travel to Tyria (the place where the oiginal takes place) or do any of the things there.
Ibis
Wow that's weird! I can't imagine playing in Cantha (haven't seen it yet) without ever seeing the original game.

Wolfie, you are so way more advanced than us. We tried to get to Droknar's Forge by just going directly South and bypassing the long way around ... and just got totally beaten back by lvl 22 mobs when we are only lvl 18 and 16.

My Ranger is lvl 19 now and she uses 2 different bows .. A Blue Icy Longbow of Cold Dmg 14-26 (req 8 marksmanship) Reduces Poison by 20% and also A Purple Sundering Shortbow of Enchanting Pierce Dmg 13-24 (req 6 marksmanship) Armor Penetration +20% (chance 18%) Enchantments last 16% longer. She is my favorite character.

How much is Factions going for nowadays? Anyone know? I'd like to buy it. Oh, is it the same way as Guild Wars - you can choose to be PVP or Role Player character?
Wolfie
Well to buy in shops here in Ireland it's 44.99 or thereabouts (eruo). PvP charas work teh same way, except now they can be assassins or ritualists.
And Ibis, if you can get to Beacon's Perch you can usually find people who will run you to Droknar's Forge for anything from 1k to 3k, with the occasional free "test run"

My ranger is level twenty and has been for a while.
He uses a Shocking Half Moon (15-28 damage), a Gargash's Recurve Bow (15-28 green) and a Fiery Storm Bow of Fortitude (15-28 fire damage).
The Half Moon was a gift from a guild friend way back when my ranger was only in Ascalon. The Gargash's and the Storm Bow cost me 7k and 6k respectively to buy off other players in Drok's
Ibis
Wow those are all really nice bows! All max damage. Okay, so how do you make so much money to be able to pay people to run you to Droks? I was always afraid to do that because if they want you to pay in advance and there is a problem and everyone dies or the party disbands or whatever - they've already got your money. Guess I should just get the henchies together and spend some serious killing time out as far as I can stay alive at... to accumulate enough money.
hunter14
wow u guys are soooooooooo lucky that u dont a a restricting dad like mine. he never lets me buy any thing. i really want to get guild wars buts my dad wont let me. sad.gif

Also on another note i herd that guild wars is alot like world of warcraft. is that true? ohmy.gif
Ibis
Does your Dad say why he won't let you buy Guild Wars? That's weird. Video games aren't really harmful.

On the question of similarity to WOW, I never played that game but from what I've heard ... no, Guild Wars is not that much like it. I guess someone who has played WOW could tell you in what ways they are similar, but Guild Wars is very recent and solves many of the problems that the older games have been complained about.
